"Desperate: Hope for the Mom who Needs to Breathe" by Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson is a devotional written by two moms, a newbie and a veteran. Sarah Mae has three small children, is a SAHM, but also a writer and speaker. Sally Clarkson is a mother of four, the youngest is in her late teens, she is a Home School mom and a missionary. The two moms put together a series of "momisms". Each chapter opens with letters to each other concerning an issue. Then Sarah will give her side, then Sally hers. Each chapter ends with a "Your Turn" which consists of scripture and journaling, followed by "Something to Do" which is a homework assignment.
I am a mom. I have three (two are in high school, one in second grade) I also have four step children (two are graduating college, one is still in, and the younger is joining the army). I have faced the bad from terminal illness, felonies, and head lice. I have also seen the good, from Honor students, beauty queen, star athlete, and hunting trophies. There was a lot in this book I totally got. Sometimes it really hit home. I could relate to both women, though not always on the same issues. This is a good book for the mama. Whatever "season" she is in. I received this book for free from the publisher, Thomas Nelson, through Family Fiction.

What mother hasn't felt overwhelmed and like you were on an emotional roller coaster? Desperate by Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson was a breath of fresh air for me. I have long struggled with the myth that being a mom should be a breeze for every woman who lives her children. Desperate examines motherhood with an honest look.
Both Sarah and Sally are mothers who have been there, right in the trenches, struggling to make it through the day, wondering if they were making a positive difference in their children's lives. Sarah is the mother of busy kids and shares her struggles and stories of inspiration. Sally is a mentor mom who shares insight that only a mom who has passed through these trials can share.
You will be transported through, "The Dream Life...Altered", to "Getting Real About Mama-hood", and finish with "The Redeeming". You'll begin each chapter with letters written by the co-authors that hint at what the chapter will hold for you. Each chapter is filled with encouragement, help, and answers to guide you in the journey of being a mother told with stories and examples from the lives of these two mothers. Scriptures and questions close each chapter along with the invitation to watch a video that recaps and summarizes the contents.
I cannot say enough positive about this book as it has encouraged me as a mother to strive to be my best for my kids right now. Comparing myself to others and their standards is never an option that will leave me feeling good in the end. I challenge you to go on this journey to grow yourself as a mother and be encouraged by all that you already do that is excellent.

I have long been a fan of Sally's books for mothers. She writes with compassion and understanding, providing encouragement as well as a vision to strive for. This book is no different. I have never struggled as deeply with depression as Sarah Mae has, but I often find myself feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and as if I am failing in my role as a wife, mother, homemaker, and homeschool mom.
Each chapter of Desperate spoke to me in some way, but the second section of the book (Getting Real About Mama-Hood) spoke to me most. The chapters on overcoming selfishness in ourselves, the desire to escape, and housework struggles hit really close to home. I have to admit that I was so encouraged to read that Sally had some of the same struggles as me in her motherhood. I had an image of her as a perfect mother, with a beautifully kept home, and I needed to have that false image destroyed. I needed to know she was more like me than I had previously thought. It gave me hope and renewed my vision for my role as a mother and homemaker.
I absolutely recommend Desperate to every mom who has found motherhood to be harder than she expected. If you look at yourself each day and only see failures, weaknesses, and disappointment ... then you need to read this book. If your vision for motherhood doesn't line up with the reality of your everyday life, and you feel like life has become drudgery instead of joy, then you need to read Desperate. Sarah Mae and Sally's gentle encouragement is life-giving.
This book was provided to me in e-book format for review purposes. I received no other compensation for this review, and these are my honest opinions.

Have you ever really, Really, REALLY liked a book that you thought “I might as well highlight the whole book!”? Well, that is me with Desperate! After just seeing the title, I knew I would read this book and am so glad I did. (I was even extra blessed to get to review it!) I’ve needed a book like this for several years and would highly recommend it to all moms!! We moms may be exhausted and desperate....“But you have a faithful God who loves you and whom I believe will bring you what you need to get through. There is no one answer for everyone, because the Lord works differently in each of our lives, but you need to know that He hasn’t forgotten you. He doesn’t forget His children, big or little.” (from Sarah)
Sally Clarkson, an older mom, became a mentor for Sarah Mae, a younger mom, and now they are joining forces to minister to other moms. At the beginning of each chapter they share a letter from Sarah and then Sally’s response to it. Next they each share very honestly and beautifully from their heart. And don’t worry; We are not given a new to-do-list, but instead understanding and encouragement...
“I came to realize over the years that the forming of their souls was a hard, long-distance race. In retrospect I can now see how it has become an essential part of my spiritual service of worship to God. He entrusted these precious souls into my hands. The work of motherhood was the way He wanted me to serve and love Him...In order to stay the course, we mothers must see the nurturing of our children as a spiritual call in order to have integrity in our own Christian lives.” (from Sally)
The book is divided into three sections -- 1: The Dream Life...Altered, 2: Getting Real About Mama-hood, and 3: The Redeeming -- with chapters breaking topics down. At the end of each chapter is “Your Turn” with verses, questions, suggested activity and even a video. Then at the end of the book is a question and answer with Sally Clarkson.
Now, go get a copy for you and a few more to share with your mommy friends!! :)

This is one of the best mothering books I've ever read. It is the ideal book for new mothers and seasoned mothers alike. Each chapter begins with a letter from Sarah to Sally followed by Sally's reply. Then the authors take turns writing about each topic from their different perspectives. Sarah is a mom with young children while Sally's children are already grown.
At the end of each chapter, Bible study and journaling questions help you to evaluate yourself. Every chapter also has a QR code and website address to a short video with the authors that correspond to each lesson. The book ends with a wonderful Q & A by Sally.
The book has 14 chapters and 221 pages (print version). The chapters are divided into three sections: 1) The Dream Life...Altered 2) Getting Real About Mama-Hood and 3)The Redeeming. It's just the right length for busy moms. Chapters are meaty, but short enough to read in one sitting.
A favorite quote of mine is from Sally Clarkson:
"I believe there is no 'one right way.' God calls each of us to seek Him, to look for His wisdom and to follow where He calls us by faith, and it will be a different story for each family, marriage, and individual mom or day."
We need to look to the Bible and to God for our direction and not to the many voices telling us what to do. I struggle with perfectionism so I really liked what Sally has to say about this as well,
"Living by performance always kills our souls because none of us are perfect mothers, and we will fail in some areas, so we need to live by God's approval and mercy to feel His grace."
One thing I really loved for more experienced moms was a call to help the younger moms as is Biblical. It is a reminder to younger moms to not forget what it was like to be a mom with young children and for those of us who are older to lend a hand to them.
I found this book to be encouraging and uplifting, yet challenging at the same time. Many parenting books leave you feeling guilty and overwhelmed. Desperate does the opposite. Both authors are transparent and offer hope and encouragement. This is a must read for all Christian homeschooling moms. Don’t miss it. (I've already started re-reading it.)

I like this book, because it is written for me as a homeschooling stay at home mom. I was afraid that it would advise me to ask for help outside my home and to let my children go to many places to be myself, but it didn't. The writers do advise to find friends and rest sometimes, but the main idea is, that mothers are the only ones who have to take care of their children, and children need heir mothers.

I love that this book, Desperate, is an exchange between two mothers - one mother that is in the midst of it all and one mother that is able to reflect, remember, and mentor. Personally, I feel in the middle of these two women since my children range in age from 2- 18 years old. I have some reflection and perspective but am overwhelmed some days with the challenges of the different personalities and trying to homeschool them all.
This book expresses the honest feelings and situations that mothers face. Each chapter begins with a letter from Sarah Mae to Sally and Sally's letter back. This is followed by Sarah sharing her challenges of mothering, her response, and how God is growing her in her struggles. Sally also reflects on her years in the similar circumstances. The chapters end with scripture and thought/discussion questions and "something to do." There is also a QR code to scan for a video clip.
This book is an encouragement. It also speaks to the need for Godly mentors and encouragers in our lives. I know that as I have been reading this book and mothering my littlest, who still hasn't slept through the night, I appreciate both perspectives. I hope to be able to mentor moms as I am able. I am thankful for the challenges recently so that I may be able to better be in touch and support new moms who may be feeling desperate.

I know that many moms have loved this book, but I really didn't get much out of it. There were some good points made, but I felt it wasn't new information for me. It seemed to take forever to get through this book, and I would have given up had I not agreed to finish it in order to write a review.
The books focuses on grace. Which truly is an amazing Biblical concept, but I feel the way it was presented in this book is unbalanced, and an easy answer for everything.
Also, depression is presented as a natural, inevitable part of motherhood, and I do not believe that to be Biblical.
I do see that Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson's heart was truly to encourage mothers though and there were some practical tips which I also practice, such as searching for and creating beauty in our homes and every day lives. I do think this book could be a valuable tool for some mothers, it just wasn't a good fit for where I am I my life.

I have found a fantastic book for moms that I wish I'd had seventeen years ago when my kids were young. Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson have discovered a heartbeat of moms that I haven't seen much on book shelves.
This book is different because it isn't one woman telling other moms how to be a "better" mom. There are no lists of ideas to try, or new recipes that all kids will eat, or discipline that works! This book is DIFFERENT.
My favorite thing about Desperate is Sarah Mae's crystal-clear honesty. She shares her heart openly - even the stuff we don't like to say out loud. Like,
"I just can't be a mother today."
"I just want to be alone ..."
"Lately it's been easier to put on the T.V. than put on being a good mother."
"I am so selfish! Every day I see it in myself more and more."
"When my life feels overwhelming, I escape to the Internet."
The second thing I love about Desperate is Sally Clarkson's wisdom shared within her own failures turned into victories. Each chapter starts with an exchange of letters between the two women - Sarah sharing her heart and asking for help. Then Sally counters with words of godly wisdom, encouragement and all are completely bathed in "been-there-done-that."
There are also times after each chapter to open scripture and speak openly with God with your own personal struggles and ways to re-think them. Could be used as a group study of women together.
In the end of the book are twenty-two pages of Q&A with Sally and Sarah. I loved hearing other moms express their questions from the heart that make me feel so "normal". My fears and questions are actually felt by others out there. And that may be the greatest reason to buy this book and pass it on to every mom you know - so not one mom ever feels she is not normal.
There is also a special note of attention for single moms included.
Thanks to Thomas nelson for allowing me a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to review the book positively.

"Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe" by Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson addresses the often overwhelming nature of motherhood. Mae is a mother of three young children who is in the trenches and barely on the other side of that common desperate feeling of moms with small children. Clarkson is an experienced mom with four grown children. Mae writes out of her current experience; Clarkson writes from the years of experience she has garnered.
There are 14 chapters, each one addressing a different aspect of motherhood. Topics include sin, selfishness, housework, purpose, and needing a mentor. Each chapter is introduced by a brief correspondence between the two authors. Then each of them write a portion of each chapter. There are discussion questions and an activity to do on your own at the end of each chapter to further allow the message of the chapter to sink in. There are also brief videos that correspond to each chapter for further depth.
Overall, this book was absolutely fantastic. As a mom of two young (and very active!) boys, I can really relate to the feeling of desperation. It is a wonderful book to go through on your own, or for a group to go through, or even for a couple of women to read through. There is much to discuss and process and all of it is good, solid material. "Desperate" is a must-read for every mom!
"You are exactly the mom your children need. He created you for these good works from before the foundation of the world, and as you walk this great call of motherhood with Him holding your hand, you will be amazed at how He weaves the beautiful thread of redemption through the pattern of your life. He brings light to the dark places through you, something you could only have accomplished by embracing His wonderful call and embracing these very precious children who were inextricably created as part of the design for your life." ~Sally Clarkson, p. 187

Where was this book when I first had my child? I would have loved to have read such a helpful and encouraging book as "Desperate".
I enjoyed how each chapter begins with correspondence from Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson. You then read about each author's experience on a particular topic of motherhood.
I gleaned a lot from this book even though my children are not babies anymore. Yet and still, I was convicted and enlightened by this book.
"Desperate" is a unique read; balancing Sarah's experience as a young mother versus Sally's years of experience and wisdom.
I learned the value of younger women having older women as mentors from this book.
"Desperate" offers biblical wisdom and practical advice for mothers, especially, new mothers with children.
I can't recommend it enough.

Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe written by Sarah Mae & Sally Clarkson sets out to provide encouragement, help, and answers to questions.
Did it deliver?
The authors provided a lot of tools. Each chapter begins with a letter from the younger mom and the seasoned mother's response, a written portion from each, Your Turn (Biblical verses and questions), Something to Do (an action plan) and finally a QR code to watch a video.
Whereas all these tools show a desire from the authors to help mothers, it falls short in the actual content. The focus seemed more on 'civilizing' children and creating a home that 'pleases' one's heart. Although Scripture references are contained in the Your Turn section, it seems to be limited to that section instead of the groundwork for providing hope for mothers. The solution for desperate moms seemed to come from within and others as opposed to God.
Great topics were brought up, but not solutions. For example, the authors stated that depression is part of motherhood. The 'it just comes with the territory' mentality is not Biblical. Temporal remedies such as bringing flowers and meals, playing soft music, and lighting candles are just that--temporal fixes. I think the authors had a great opportunity of examining heart issues that can be healed by the Word of God and missed it.
This is not a book I would recommend.

The first time I saw this book, Desperate by Sally Clarkson and Sarah Mae, I was immediately drawn to it. The book was written for moms who needs to breathe. Basically it is for all moms because one time or another, we all needed to breathe. No matter how committed and how much you love your kids, there will be days that you'd feel overwhelmed and didn't know what to do or who to talk to. Sometimes, you'd think that you are ready but then something happens and every thing turns upside down.
Sarah Mae is a young mom to 3 kids and she openly shares the struggles, fears, worries and the desperation she felt as she continues on her motherhood journey. Each chapter begins with an email from her to Sally Clarkson. Sally shares her response which is filled with wisdom and encouragement from her many years of being a mom herself.
Being a mother, I have had moments when too many people would voice out what they think was best for our family and it really bothered me but eventually I learned to listen to that small voice inside, and I was so encouraged to read Sally's words "I had found joy and freedom and pleasure in my life were when I listened to God’s voice in Scripture and pursued the dreams God had put on my heart. What other people thought of our path was irrelevant."
Halfway reading this book, I am convinced that I should share this book with other moms out there. I am praying that I might be able to walk alongside other moms who feel loss, lonely and invisible and discuss this book. Each chapter ends with thought provoking and soul searching questions with suggested activities to further solidify what you have learned in the chapter.
We all need someone to walk along with us in our journey. Desperate allows us to bare our souls and find strength through God's love while encouraging us to find a group to grow with us. I highly recommend this book to all moms.

I have waited with great anticipation for this volume--a book written by two of my favorite authors--one who writes with the grace and wisdom of one who has lived to tell the story, and one who writes with freshness and openness so real and humble that the connection I feel with her heart stuns me. And now I've held the book and read it--twice. First with the eagerness of someone who was hungry and, well, desperate! And then after the initial dash through, once more with pen in hand and thoughtfulness of mind.
This book is a lovely marriage. I hear the voice of Sarah Mae so clearly echoing my own--a voice of desperation, fear, loneliness, and concern that she isn't measuring up to her ideals. And I hear the voice of Sally--a voice of calm, measured wisdom speaking truth and courage and assurance into her younger counterpart. While I have loved Sally Clarkson's works in the past, I have found myself thinking that Sally did sound so calm and measured and wise--all admirable qualities to be sure! But it made me wonder if she had ever truly been as haggard and confused and awkward and frustrated as I seem to be at times. With the addition of Sarah Mae's voice and the conversation between them, I began to see that, yes, even Sally had at one time been in my shoes--in Sarah Mae's shoes. Only commitment, faithfulness, obedience, time, and the power of the Holy Spirit had shaped Sally and her family into who they are today. I began to realize with increasing hope, that perhaps with the same commitment, faithfulness, and obedience, God could fashion me and my own family into something beautiful of His making as well.
This book is for every mother who has ever felt as though the circumstances of her roles as mama, homemaker, and wife would surely drown her. Everyone who has ever wondered if she truly has it in her to be the kind of mama she really wants to be. Everyone who is overwhelmed with just how plain hard mothering can be. This book is also for every mom who has walked through the years of raising her children and now stands on the other side. It's a call to reach out a hand of help and grace and challenge to those who are coming up after you--to walk alongside them and infuse them with courage and hope. It's about doing motherhood together.

Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe, is pretty much what I found Desperate to be. It is a book of HOPE. I only wish it had been around 15 years ago when I was struggling and overwhelmed as a first time young mother.
Sarah Mae, is candid and venerable about her struggles as a young mom. Young mothers will easily identify with many of the trials that Sarah Mae has gone through. Hope is just around the corner for those who find themselves desperate, as Sally Clarkson offers offers wise spiritual insight birthed from her own life experiences and years of discipling women. I was greatly encouraged and inspired.
Finally a book to share with the young, desperate, moms in my life. I look forward to doing a book study and being a mentor to young moms I know.

No matter which "category" of motherhood you find yourself in, I encourage you to read Desperate.
All you one-day-mommas will need this message. Those of us in the trenches need this message. And those of you who have survived this tough season--we need you to remind us of this message.
We are not alone. We will get through this. There is hope in the journey as we lean into the Lord.

I am so excited about this book! It really is like coming up for air when you’ve been under the water for too long. It’s like having a Godly mentor sitting at my kitchen table helping me see a different perspective of life in motherhood. A desirable perspective of life that I would have never seen if it weren’t for Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson being willing to sit down and be transparent about their lives and struggles in the early stages of their growing families. For me, as for most women, sometimes we just need to realize there is an easier way than doing it all by ourselves -- we don’t have to face womanhood or mommyhood alone! I am so grateful for their perspectives, ideas and wisdom found within these pages. I am forever changed. Thank you, Jesus, so SO much. <3

I couldn't put this book down. I struggled to even see the words through my tears. Sarah Mae understands. She knows. I went through my struggles alone when I first had my girls, beaten down by the enemy and awash in grief that I could barely cope with my life.
Oh, if I'd had this book then. Or a friend.
Now that I'm through that storm and looking back from this sunshiny other side, I can see that dark place and wonder at our amazing God who saw me through it. I was not alone. But I didn't have any help. I had no mentors. I had no friends who offered assistance in sincerity. My husband was at a loss, not understanding what was happening, why I felt the way I did. I was just overwhelmed.
Sarah Mae fills that gap that I needed and still need. That so many moms need. Help.
