Thomas Nelson Clean: A Proven Plan for Men Committed to Sexual Integrity

In Clean Dr. Douglas Weiss offers a proven path to purity and gives men the tried and true tools they need to find freedom for a lifetime. He also offers a unique theological perspective on the true nature of the battle. The enemy of our souls uses sexual addiction as a distraction to keep believers from pursuing their God-given purpose. However, as Dr. Weiss pulls back the curtain on this charade, men will discover the power of God's love to restore their souls and reclaim their lives.

Yes, this is a book for men and I am a woman but I was drawn to this book because I know there are many men struggling with this area of their life. But I have to tell you, if you are a woman who struggles in this area (as I have been) you can glean a lot of great information from this book.
I think it is becoming more and more clear that women have unhealthy sexual thoughts and impulses more than most people realize. So whether you are a man or a woman I think this is an excellent resource for you, or if you know someone who is fighting this battle pick up a copy and give it to them (that is what I plan on doing with my copy).
What I liked about this book was that it didn't just tell you what your problem was but the author gave you actual steps you can take to get clean and walk away from this addiction or struggle. Becoming clean is not for the wimpy man or woman, it take courage to get clean because you have to confess your sin and be held accountable.
The author encourages people who are clean to be bold and ask the hard questions, not easy.
The thing I didn't like about the book was that it didn't address the root of the problem, why are some men draw to sexually inappropriate behavior? As someone who has fought with this I know my root cause was sexual abuse and I needed help healing from that. There is usually a reason someone is draw to this type of behavior.
I also felt that the author used the book to promote his other books. I am sure they are good but there are many other good resources out there as well but they were never mentioned. It was a great book and I do recommend it but I think there are other wonderful resources as well and they shouldn't be neglected.
A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher through the Booksneeze program in exchange for an honest review.

Clean: A Proven Plan for Men Committed to Sexual Integrity by Douglas Weiss, PhD is correctly titled but could definitely be titled for women or person wanting to break another addiction.
Though this book is mostly referring to men, Weiss does address, very shortly I might add, that women have the same issues especially in today’s time. He uses specific advice for overcoming these desires but I wouldn’t necessarily agree with every single suggestion he makes for recourse. Realizing that not every method is suited for every person there are several suggestions to choose from. Though overpowering sexual addiction is the main topic here, it is relatable by applying his simple tactics to recovering from other bad habits as well. I have heard of using these same tactics for other types of addictions. Weiss has personal experience in overcoming a sexual addiction for 25 years, which makes his suggestions all the more worth trying. As with any bad habit breaking, it’s in personal follow through and in my opinion relying on Almighty God for the strength to move forward. This text is not for those seeking to gain their overcoming power from the “universe.” It is full of Biblical references that create a powerful foundation to stand on. He addresses overcoming faith, humility, the characteristic of addiction and pride. I believe these are all applicable to any sinful behavior. Needless to say, the reading of this book won’t hurt you. If you are dealing with an addiction or not it is good information.

Douglas Weiss, Ph.D., is an international lecturer and the author of 20 books. He is the executive director of Heart to Heart Counseling Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has appeared regularly in the print and broadcast media, including Oprah, Good Morning American, 20/20, and many other national shows as a clinical expert.
Dr Weiss’ book, Clean: A Proven Plan for Men Committed to Sexual Integrity is a guide towards full recovery in the area of sex related addictions. As the title implies, this is a man’s book. I have read other books on this same topic and several of them I would encourage a woman to read, just so she has an idea of what the man in her life is going through, but not this one – this is a man’s book for certain.
As a Psychologist, Dr. Weiss certainly approaches this topic from that point of view. The book immediately takes a no nonsense approach. Dr. Weiss doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the seriousness of sex addition and how it can destroy a man’s life and family. As a reader, don’t expect this book to hold your hand, but at the same time Dr. Weiss gives you the hope that you need to know that freedom from addiction is possible.
Also note that Dr. Weiss is a Christian, so much of this book uses scripture and is certainly written from a believer’s point of view.
I would recommend this book, especially if you’ve read other books on this topic and have still not found the freedom that you desire.

I recently had the chance to read "Clean A Proven Plan for Men Committed to Sexual Integrity" by Douglas Weiss through a resource at BookSneeze that allows bloggers copies of books in return of an honest review, whether positive or negative.
This book is meaty, and this is evident just by the title alone. It's not for anyone looking for an excuse, or for an easy way out- but rather a tested, proven, guide- and furthermore testament- of someone who has been there, done that, and came out the other side. The author has been without sexual sin for over 25 years, and I think that alone proves that he has an idea of how this stuff works.
This book provides a don't-be-lazy hands on approach to a topic most run from privately, much less deal with publicly. The author gives specific resources for the reader and doesn't leave anything to question.
The most important part, I would say is this isn't a self-help book. The author fully realizes our inability to gain victory on our own, and consistently returns his message to the only one that can truly set a prisoner free. Along those lines, I know the most profound part of this book for me was the author giving examples he knew of, of just how far God is willing to go to force us to face our problem. Things that "just happen" to happen that lead to someone getting caught and forcing them to deal with the situation. It is evident God is not willing to leave us in the mire.
This book is a very useful tool and a must for any man, either as a help in times or need, or a resource, inspiration, etc. Men should read this.

For any man struggling with sexual integrity this book is a great resource to have. The subtitle of the book says it all:"A proven plan for men committed to sexual integrity.
If men are honest with themselves, we as men are all tempted sexually. Many men struggle with pornography and lust on a daily basis. This book will help men deal with this serious issue.
God wants men to live a life clean and free of sexual sin. He wants all men to enjoy sex under His authority and in the context of marriage with a woman.
This book has a great biblical foundation. The advice in this book comes from the author's extensive knowledge as well as God's Word, the Bible.
I highly recommend this book for all men! I received this book from BookSneeze in exchange for my honest review.

Dr. Douglas Weiss's book Clean, subtitled "A Proven Plan for Men Committed to Sexual Integrity" is a highly practical manual for Christian men who desire to break free or help others break free from sexual addiction of all forms. There's plenty of important information here for disciples, pastors, church leaders, wives, families, and brothers in Christ who seek to root out and destroy sexual addiction in their own lives and the lives of others. Clean is well-written, uncompromising, but unusually encouraging and hopeful as it presents practical steps for men to find freedom in their lives.
Dr. Weiss's approach remains biblical but is often informed by psychology. The strength of the book lies in the author's ability to approach the issue of sexual addiction as both a Christian counselor and as an evangelistic minister. The powerful commitment to clean living, accountability and public confession partnered with the practical component will be compelling for many searching for answers, and while the book never compromises on issues such as pornography, inappropriate relationships, and masturbation, it remains overwhelmingly positive and encouraging, repeatedly emphasizing the hope of freedom, which is vital for this kind of book.
The emphasis on psychology and practical methodology presents both informative and unique nuggets of truth as well as some potentially harmful ideas. Dr. Weiss is clearly an advocate of the most basic behavioral modification. Much like Pavlov's dog, he believes that addicts can and should condition their physical brains and bodies by punishing themselves when they transgress in the area of lust. This includes, "Eat a raw onion, Run two miles (if you're not in shape), Eat Ben and Jerry's at 10:00 p.m. (if you are in shape), Leg lunges for half a mile or one mile." He also advocates the method of snapping a rubber band on your wrist each time you have a lustful thought. I believe these behavior modification techniques are potentially harmful and unbiblical. Jesus did emphasize doing whatever necessary to end sin in your life (Matt 5:29-30), and I empathize with those who want something practical they can do and believe in to end their sin apart from repentance and confession. Some may indeed be helped by these techniques, but an emphasis on this kind of behavior modification can be harmful and distracts from the life-giving power of the Spirit within. I can't imagine Jesus or the disciples teaching disciples to snap themselves with a rubber band or beat themselves when they mentally transgressed.
In spite of my strong reservations regarding Dr. Weiss's methodology of behavioral conditioning and never-ending accountability, there is life-giving power in this book and the core is here to set every man free and lead a revival of purity within the church. As with most books on sanctification I've read, I wish more was said about identity in Christ, the practical power of the Holy Spirit, and the ability to live above temptation by taking every thought captive. My dissatisfaction does not mean that this isn't a good book that will help many. I am glad that I read it and some of Dr. Weiss's revelations were new and important to me. While I would recommend Winning the Battle Within by Neil Anderson and At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry by Steve Gallagher before Clean, it is an important book on a much needed topic.
My thanks to Thomas Nelson for providing a complimentary review copy. I have provided an honest review.
