Bethany House The Centurion's Wife, Acts of Faith Series #1

Caught up in the maelstrom following the death of an obscure rabbi in the Roman backwater of first-century Palestine, Leah finds herself also engulfed in her own turmoil--facing the prospect of an arranged marriage to a Roman soldier, Alban, who seems to care for nothing but his own ambitions. Head of the garrison near Gallilee, he has been assigned by Palestine's governor to ferret out the truth behind rumors of a political execution gone awry. Leah's mistress, the governor's wife, secretly commissions also to discover what really has become of this man whose death--and missing body--is causing such furor.

I read this book about a year ago, and I just loved how it put the Bible into real life perspective. I know it's fictional, mixed with historical, and yet it's meant a lot. I prayed awhile back that God would bring the Bible alive to me, more than just a text book, so I could see the realness.. and reading this book did a bit of that. I loved it so much, I started a "Biblical Fiction" Book club, hoping others will start to see the Bible in a real and personal way.

The Centurion's Wife was a great book that surpassed my expectations. The authors opened up the world during Christ's death and really put into light what and how people were thinking after Christ died and rose again. They looked at it from different angles and it made me think again about how amazing it really was that He is alive!

love this book...a mix between fiction and historical documentary told from the point of view of a slave girl working for Pilate's wife and her betrothed husband, a Roman centurion whose lad was healed by Jesus' "remote" command, both searching for the truth to find out what actually happened to the corpse of Jesus after the crucifixion. There were a lot of details about the daily lives of both the Romans and the Jews living in Palestine during that period of time, adding a lot of colours which enrich the understanding and the cultural background to the biblical account. Greatly recommended.

Great book. Not only wonderful fiction, but contains a huge amount of very interesting historical information, and insight into the daily lives of that time period. Like it so well, I ordered and read the second and third books. They are just as interesting.

This book was amazing! I found it for 75% off at a bookstore and thought I would try it out and I am so grateful that I got it! It was really well written and had a great story line! I thought their was going to be a little bit more romance, but I was okay with that because I don't like a lot of romance anyway! Overall a fantastic read and can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Title: The Centurion’s Wife.
Author: Davis Bunn and Janette Oke.
Genre: Christian, Historical Fiction, Romance, Early Christian Period.
Plot: Leah may be the niece of Pilate, the famous or perhaps infamous governor who had Jesus scourged and then washed his hands of His blood, but she serves as Procula’s handmaid and feels tainted by her family’s disgrace. Haunted by her two elder sisters’ unwanted arranged marriages, Leah vows never to marry and never to trust a man. Her heart hardened yet her hands gentle and her eye quick to attend her mistress and the aging Dorit, Leah’s only friend in Pilate’s household, Leah is as content as can be expected. Until word reaches her that Pilate has received an offer of marriage for her from a centurion whom she has never even heard of before.
Distressed, Leah carries on with her duties while all around her swarm the reports of the Prophet Jesus’ death and what a good man her centurion is. With Procula’s mysterious dreams and painful headaches still lingering, Leah and her mistress pack up and head back to Jerusalem where Procula sends her out to find Jesus’ disciples and learn if an attack upon Rome is in question.
What Leah, amidst all her duties and the memories of a former life locked away in her heart, doesn’t know is that her centurion, Alban, has a heart as emotionally scarred as her own. Sent away from home upon his father’s death, Alban remains stationed in a little corner of the dusty empire near Galilee where his main concern is keeping his men alive and dealing with those pesky raiding parties of Parathians. When his request for Leah’s hand is seemingly accepted and he is summed before Pilate, Alban is nearly knocked off his feet at the idea of a Judean betrothal and the task he must undergo in order to claim Leah as his own. Now both of them are on the hunt for the truth, but what they find shakes their separate worlds to their cores.
Likes/Dislikes: Beautifully written with a flowing, engaging plot and wonderful well drawn characters that immediately became my best friends, this book is an epic Christian look at the events surrounding the birth of Christianity. Mixed in with all the seriousness and the beauty of the setting is good clean humor among the characters that had me smiling all the way from cover to cover and the last final twist at the end brought happy tears to my eyes! Highly recommended!
Rating: PG-13 and up for reading level.

I love this work of historical fiction. It looks at the questions I've heard nonbelievers ask today - how do you know that they didn't just make a mistake? Maybe Jesus wasn't really dead? Plus, it looked at everything from an outsiders' point of view. What would the Romans have thought of his death and resurrection? What about the church leaders? Great insights into the controversy that would have surrounded this amazing time.

The Centurion's Wife is a fictional story of a young woman's journey to discover Jesus and his early followers and along the way she also discovered love. This book was captivating and it holds the readers attention. I absolutely enjoyed the story and wonderful imagery of the Roman culture and early christians. The setting came across as authentic and places the reader in that time and place. The message was clear and believable.

The Centurion's Wife is a beautiful story of two peoples' journey to discover the true identity of Jesus. This book was such a surprise to me, mostly because I expected a girly woman's novel, but it was so much better than that. I absolutely loved this book, and I more than loved the wonderful imagery and amazing characters. The setting was well thought out and extremely well researched. The message was clear and spectacular. I loved it and can't wait for more.

A good read. Being a fan of the history of the early Christian church, this provides a look at the first century Christian way of life as well as a fictional take on the New Testament story of the Roman centurion whose servant is healed by Christ. Has a little of everything - intrigue, romance, history and faith.

I'd read much of Mrs. Oke's literature before, but this was my first time experiencing Mr. Bunn's talent. I enjoyed the Bible events that were tied into the story lines; in fact, this novel enlighted passages of Scripture I'd never understood before. The story of Leah's arranged marriage to the Centurion Alban, a man she'd never even met, and the romance that blossomed between them grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go! The characters and dialogue awaken the reader's senses, inviting them to take a trip back in time. If you enjoy Bible history AND romance, this book is for you!
