Bethany House Taming the Wind, Land of the Lone Star Series #3

When Cassie Lowe goes to live with her sister in the years following the Civil War, she is reacquainted with a man who once saved her life, Tyler Atherton. But Cassie is no longer the lighthearted young woman he once knew. She is now a widow with a young daughter, and she is nursing the disappointments and hurts from a difficult marriage.

Tyler has demons of his own. Still haunted by the knowledge that his father was murdered by Comanches, he puts all his focus on reclaiming his inheritance: the ranch stolen from his family as punishment for his fighting for the Confederacy. With his affection for Cassie growing, he longs to provide a home and future for her and her daughter. Though yearning to pledge their love, both Cassie and Tyler struggle to conquer their fears.

Carissa Lowe's first marriage ended with a disaster that would have taken her life if not for the heroic actions of Tyler Atherton. Little more than two years later, Carissa finds herself living near attractive, vengeful Tyler. As Tyler struggles with his father's murder, Carissa is bound by fear and mistrust. Although drawn to each other, their inability to move forward with their lives holds them apart. It will take a cattle drive, the danger of the Texas frontier, and a miracle to hold them together. Read more in Taming the Wind.
Taming the Wind by Tracie Peterson is the third book in the Land of the Lone Star Series. Somehow, I read the first book, Chasing the Sun, but missed the second book, Touching the Sky. Taming the Wind worked reasonable well as a stand alone novel since some background information was given. However, even with that information, I felt a disconnect from the main characters. Perhaps it would have been different if I had previously read the second book.
To me, Tyler Atherton was the shining character of the book. When the romance element of the story seemed to stagnate, Tyler's personal struggles and the resulting development kept the story moving. In addition to the romance and character development, there was an element of suspense. Unfortunately, during the height of the suspense, I put the book down and didn't read it for several days. The plot just never hooked me and when I should have been glued to the story, there was no pressure drawing me back to the book. I do love the gorgeous cover of this book, but for the aforementioned reasons, I recommend renting it from the library before buying.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It is SO nice to be able to read a book that has a positive message and continues to remind the reader of God's presence in our lives.
Ms. Peterson does such a great job of bringing history to life with her detailed descriptions of the land and the attitudes of the people of that period. I appreciate the research that must go into these historical fiction books to make them so true to the period. Also, she is able to pull the reader into her books. While reading, I found myself pulling for the characters and hoping for a happy ending for them. This book is full of adventure, love, hope and a few twists and turns, too.
I have read all of the books in the series and highly recommend them. I enjoyed this series so much that I'm sad that this is book is the last one in the series. This series has made me want to seek out other books by this author.
I was sent a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers, however all opinions are my own.

A sweet western romance, in the heart of Texas.
This book had a bit of a slow start for me, but as the pages turned I became more invested in the story. I loved the way that Tyler and Carissa interacted with each other and the other characters around them. Carissa and Tyler were a really cute couple.
There were some great side characters in the form of cowhands, who loved to play jokes and their fellow man. I really liked how the book felt authentically western, with the ranch details and cattle drives.
There was some great good old fashioned western action, and an another piece was added to the plot emerged about halfway through the book that really kept me reading.
Carissa and Tyler both grew spiritually throughout the course of the book, and they learn to forgive and to trust God.
Overall, I enjoyed this western read. The ranch setting was authentic, and the book had great themes. You might not believe this, but this is the first Tracie Peterson book that I ever read. And I can tell you that I will probably be reading more in the future. This book shows both sides of a great western read, the day-to-day ranch life to the gunslinging grit of the untamed state of Texas. There were great side stories, and characters. I felt like Carissa and Tyler had a really genuine relationship, and the times that they were together were well used. All in all, this book has plenty that recommends itself :)
I received this book from the publisher through Litfuse in exchange for an honest review. Thanks!

Taming the Wind is Cassie and Tyler's story. I loved the growth and maturity of Cassie. Even though she still make mistakes she is now thinking of others first. Tyler has also grown since we met him in book 1. I love his ability to make hard decisions without his christianity "wimping him out".
I just had one tiny complaint, and that was that Cassie was abducted in both the 2nd and 3rd books. It seems repetitive and I wished the author could done that differently. But it was still an excellent read and a great ending to this series. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters.

Taming The Wind, the third book in the Land of the Lonestar Series by Tracie Peterson was a very heartwarming and enjoyable read. I have yet to read the other two books in this series, but this one can easily stand on its own. I loved this one enough to purchase the other two books in the series, so I can know the complete story. The characters were likable and I was happy with the way the story ended. I give this one a 4 out of 5, as it was an enjoyable, but not a life changing read for me.
The other two books in the series are, Chasing the Sun and Touching the Sky.
I received this book from Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. I was not paid to review this book and always give my honest opinion of each book I review.

Love isn't easy. It's a risk that you choose to make, knowing that we will all die one day. We don't know when and we don't know how, but will we take the risk knowing that all could be stripped away from us at any moment? That question is one that Carissa wrestles with daily. She longs to truly be loved...not the kind of love that her now dead husband gave her. She knows love isn't shown by violence, but how can she possibly trust another man when all she has known about love has been from an abusive husband? However, when she looks at precious Gloria, her 2-year-old daughter, she sees a little girl that desperately needs a father in her life.
Tyler is a born rancher and loves nothing more than being with the cattle. He made the choice to fight with the South against the Union and now, because of that choice, he has lost his ranch and his home. It has been sold out from under him and as much as he wants a family, he has nowhere to take them to. Carissa has caught his eye, but how can he even begin to gain her trust? True, he did rescue her from dying once, but that doesn't make her trust him any more than the next guy. Throw in his anger against the Comanche for killing his pa and you've got a man who has to learn how to forgive and realizes that it is a choice to forgive or not. True forgiveness can only be given by God's grace and you see Tyler wrestling with what he knows that he should do against that which his human nature says would be okay to do.
This book is the third in the Land of the Lone Star series. I have somehow missed reading the first two, so now I feel like I need to track those down to read! I know I'm missing some details, like what got them to this point in the book, but I never felt lost with the characters or the plot at all. Tracie did a wonderful job of recapping what happened with just enough detail to intrigue me to check out the previous books, without giving away all of the information and leaving me no reason to buy the first two books in the series. She is definitely a writer that I will be reading more books by.

The widow Carissa Lowe and her three year old daughter Gloria are on an extended visit with her sister, Laura and brother-in law, Brandon on their Texas ranch. Carissa makes sure she keeps a close eye on Gloria fearing the dangers of this wild country.
Tyler Atherton visits the ranch often in hopes of spending time with Carissa and Gloria.
Carissa's fears are heightened when Brandon and Tyler along with a couple of other ranchers start planning a cattle drive. The men will be gone approximately three months. For the safety of the women they are to stay at Will and Hannah's ranch while the men are gone. Hannah and Laura are expecting and the men plan the drive so they can be back in time for the birth of their children.
Tyler leaves on the cattle drive unsure if Carissa has feelings for him. He realizes she has been through some hard times and that she has a problem trusting anyone. When the drive is over he hopes they can become more than just friends.
There are always dangers on a cattle drive and with the unrest of the Indians they must stay alert. Tyler has a strong hatred for the Indians and can't seem to let go of that hate. The Lord keeps leading and comforting him in this matter. Will he ask God to give him peace and help him turn away from this hatred or will he get the revenge he wants so badly?
These families have great deal of faith and trust in God. They know God will be there for them in goodtimes and bad even though they are not with mates they will trust in God to protect their loved ones.
This book series is definitely one of my 2012 favorites! Tracie Peterson never fails to entertain and inspire me with her writing.
The Scriptures she has added all through the book touch my heart deeply. I came away with a calmer Spirit after I finished reading this book.
I highly recommend not just this book but all the books in this series.

Tracie Peterson in her new book “Taming The Wind” Book Three in the Land Of The Lone Star series published by Bethany House takes us into the lives of Carissa Lowe and Tyler Atherton.
From the back cover: A young widow nursing the wounds of her past…
A cowboy with demons of his own…
Though grateful for the blessing of her daughter, Carissa Lowe has accepted that widowhood is her lot in life. Bound by fear and mistrust, she feels incapable of opening her heart again.
Tyler Atherton has never forgotten Carissa. When he discovers she’s living with her sister on a nearby ranch, his life becomes intertwined with the lovely widow’s. And Carissa’s daughter, Gloria, seems determined to wrap herself around his little finger. But while Tyler longs to provide a home and future for Carissa, he is haunted by an obligation he feels unable to fulfill.
Challenged by mounting hardships, can Carissa and Tyler preserve their fledgling love in a land as unforgiving and vibrant as the people who call it home?
I have to say I enjoy the Land Of The Lone Star series by Tracie Peterson because Historical Fiction is what she does best. If you have read my reviews before you know that I like history and ”Taming The Wind” is set during the beginning of the Reformation Period right after The Civil War. Both Cassie and Tyler have had painful traumatic pasts that are holding them back from embracing the present and enjoying the future. This is a book about healing, about giving our pain to God and letting Him heal our wounds so that we can be whole again. “Taming The Wind” is a lot of fun with plenty of action and suspense. It is a wonderful romance and the history is perfectly accurate. Ms. Peterson is an amazing writer and she has given us a great story with plenty of believable characters that we root for to win. I liked this book and, as always with a Tracie Peterson book, I am sorry that this is the last book and the series is at an end. The good news is we can look forward to another series by this wonderfully talented author.

Sometimes our past can be our personal prison. We have been so hurt in our pasts that we vow that we will never be hurt like that again, and we make a covenant with ourselves that we will do whatever it takes to make sure that doesn't happen. Even if it means keeping love out at all costs. That's just what Carissa Lowe believes she is doing. She is protecting not only herself and her heart, but that of her daughter Gloria. After the man who she left have her heart, not only broke it but broke her as well and she has resolved to spend her life caring only for her daughter and to keep love out. Even if that means from God as well.
Tyler Atherton is more than just a man of God, he is also Carissa's hero after saving her life from her abusive husband Malcolm. Now he can't seem to get her off his mind. While spending time serving in the Civil War, the United States feels that Tyler has turned traitor by choosing sides against the South by joining with the North. Now they want to claim Tyler's ranch land that was owned by his father because of his service to the North. The ranch lies in Texas and they haven't exactly let the past be forgotten even though the war is over. Now Tyler is working with his friend William on his ranch raising cattle, he hopes he can sell in Kansas on their upcoming cattle drive and hopefully buy back what used to be his. But sometimes the past can't be forgotten.
In the conclusion to the Land of The Lone Star Series by Tracie Peterson, Taming the Wild, reveals just how much the past can still affect our future plans. It can hold us back from the grace and blessings God can offer to heal broken hearts, it can also allow the spirit of forgiveness in to heal past wounds that only God can handle, it can also teach us all that revenge isn't the way to guide us in our futures. Sometimes the hardest thing we can do is to let go of the pain and let God deal with the outcome. In this beautiful conclusion to this series, Tracie Peterson weaves a valuable lesson through the lives of the characters of Carissa Lowe and Tyler Atherton. Each one knows what they are doing is wrong and even though other's try to help them in their walk with God, it's only a choice they can each make that will release them from their own prisons they have created and truly be set free.
I received Taming the Wind by Tracie Peterson compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. This was a wonderful series to see from beginning to end and Tracie continues to speak words of love to my book lover's heart and soul. Her characters are believable due to the flaws they possess make them more like us. There is a part in each one we can relate to and I personally feel that is why this series works so well. For those of you that love Christian Historical Fiction, you will LOVE this series. It can be read as a stand alone but I think you will miss the conflict that happened in Carissa's life prior and thus the need to read the series. It's well worth it and for that reason I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars.

Things have changed so much since these characters were introduced in the first two books. You can read this one alone, there are enough facts presented to follow.
William and Hannah Barnett are ranching her families land, and Tyler Atherton is working there. He has been unable to get his land back. They want to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas and have asked Brandon to help.
Carissa Lowe and her precocious two year old Gloria are now living with her Sister Laura, Brandon and baby Daniel. Laura is expecting their second child. Life is relatively good now for Carissa, and she is enjoying her daughter.
When Tyler reappears Carissa finds herself falling for him. He is so good with Gloria, and out of the blue calls him Papa Papa Tyer.
Will Tyler return her feeling, or is he interested in Ava? They have a long trip ahead on the trail. Tyler has to deal with his hate of Indians, and forgive the one who murdered his father.
I love how most of the characters in this story rely on the Lord. What all need to do is find the forgiveness that is freely given, and allow forgiveness.

One thing that always impresses me about Tracie Peterson's books is the manner in which they capture the flavour of the time period they are written in, and Taming The Wind is one such book. I found it fascinating how the characters struggled to live in post-Civil War Texas, dealing with the harsh feelings between Union and Confederate supporters, or how Tyler has to deal with the loss of his family's land due to fighting for the losing side. It is clear that the author has done her research well. However, I did find that this book lacks the vitality and swifter pacing of the prior books in the series, as I really struggled to get into the first half of the book. Nevertheless, there were sections of the book, especially towards the end, that captured my interest, and the book brings the series to a satisfying conclusion. Although the ending may be predictable, who can argue with a happy ending, both for Carissa and Tyler but also all of the prior characters who starred in previous books as well?
Overall, this is a series I would recommend for readers who enjoy historical fiction and who have been following the journey of the characters featured in the Land of the Lone Star series. I give this book a rating of 3.5 stars.

Taming the Wind was a good tie-up to Tracie's Land of the Lone Star series. I must admit that the beginning felt a bit slow to me. I love historical fiction, but some of the more historical facts felt forced into the dialogue which left me skimming certain passages. After setting the book down, whether attending to my children or doing my dishes or bedtime, I had no real desire to get back to the story.
Fortunately, the storyline picked up about halfway through the book, when Laura's baby decides to make an early arrival, and I had no problems finishing the book.
Taming the Wind could be read as a standalone, but it was helpful to know the ending of book 2 to connect with Carissa. It was also nice to reunite with Hannah and William from Chasing the Sun (book 1), and a surprise that book 1's villain even makes an appearance with a mistaken kidnapping!
I was glad that Taming the Wind ended happily. Carissa and Tyler's painful pasts lend plenty of seriousness to the story, but steer slidin' added some humor to the pages. If you like western-style romance, Tracie's final installment to the series will please you.
