My favorite books are suspense and fantasy. I still read a lot of novels, but I am an action type of person. But this novel kept my interest like one I haven't read in a long time. I did not want to miss reading one single word. The story and characters are so real I felt like I was watching it happen instead of reading it. Don't know how else to explain it. I loved it.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

    ~Isaiah 41:10 KJV

Fear was something the Cooper sisters lived with for most of their lives. Memories that they couldn't make sense of caused them this fear. The fear is why the sisters vowed to keep secret their childhood experiences. But God commands us not to fear.

House of Secrets grabs and takes the reader on a journey of healing the hurts and fears of the past. Bailee, the older sister, narrates and you can almost hear her voice as you read. The characters become real with each turn of the page. As I continued to read I learned why they were afraid, I felt their fear, and walked the road to healing with them. This story could be yours or someone's that you may know. It is that realistic.

I give this book 5 stars, for the story, the realness, the truthfulness. and would recommend it to my readers.

    The Blurb

They vowed, as children, to be silent...

When her father orchestrates a surprise trip to the summer house of her childhood, Bailee Cooper is unprepared for what follows. What is intended to be a happy reunion for Bailee and her sisters quickly becomes shrouded by memories from the past.

Together again, the three sisters sift through their recollections of fifteen years ago...of an ill mother, and of their father making a desperate choice. One sister believes their silence must end and the truth be revealed. But they soon come to wonder if they can trust their memories.

Mark Delahunt arrives in the wake of this emotional turmoil. Determined to win Bailee's affection, Mark becomes a strong fortress for her in this time of confusion, and what was once a tentative promise begins to take root and grow. Caught between the past and an uncertain future, can Bailee let God guide her to healing...or will she risk losing the chance to embrace love?

    Blessings,

    Tammi

I've read most of Tracie Peterson's books and she is a wonderful writer, but with this book, she tops them all! Bailee Cooper has carried an enormous load all her life, even from a small child. She has shouldered the responsibility for her 2 younger sisters, taking care of them, making sure they were safe, since her mother died and her father is on business most of the time. She has not even allowed herself even a small relationship with a man because she felt she couldn't debote time to anyone because her sisters were her life.

Then her father invites them all to their summer house where everything breaks loose. I can't say more but this book is power packed with emotion: grief, anger, guilt, shame, and every kind of heartbreak. Will these girls be able to live a life unscathed by these horrible secrets in their lives?

God's love also shines through in a very dramatic way. Peterson does not disappoint in this offering.

I loved this book and am becoming a fast fan of Tracie Peterson! The book is about a family of three daughters struggling with the devastating effects of mental illness, schizophrenia, on their family. It is a story of God's redeeming love for this family and His healing power to transform lives many years after tragedy. The story is being told by the oldest daughter whose life seems to have been the most impacted by the illness of her mother. The daughter, Bailee Cooper, is reclusive, afraid of relationships and being hurt by those who might discover the baggage of her past. Though she has suppressed many of the events in her young life, they still seem to effect her. It's not until the father invites the three daughters to their summer home on the west coast the girls begin to put the puzzle pieces of the past together to enable healing. God's overwhelming Grace shines through this book.

Spiritually, there are many examples of how God supernaturally speaks through His Word, through people, through events. There is a developing love relationship between Bailee and her boss, Mark Delahunt (a Christian). The book speaks of how the church incorrectly handled the mental illness and the effect on the family. The most resounding spiritual impact is the overwhelming Grace she receives, as the Lord draws her into the fold.

I feel the author gives much respect to the issue of mental illness and schizophrenia specifically. She is sympathetic to all the victims in its path. I particularly like how the author addresses the positive and negative impact it has on and from the church. The book caused me, as a member of the church, to reflect about what my own reaction to these victims and their families would be.

Overall, it was a very inspirational read which brought me to tears and caused me to give thanks for the Grace of God in my own life. I do highly recommend the book to all readers. What family doesn't have some form of dysfucntion? It reminded me that God is still on the throne and able and ready to meet the needs of those who will call on His name!

I feel it is a safe read for early teens also. Topics in this book include, along with mental illness, isolation, murder, suicide, depression, cutting, sexual promiscuity (though only mentioned as having occurred, not explicit), abortion, foster care, and others.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my unbiased review.
