Bethany House Head in the Clouds

Adelaide Proctor longs to find a real-life storybook hero to claim as her own. But when a husband-hunting debacle leaves her humiliated, she interviews for a governess position on a remote Texas sheep ranch and vows to leave her silly romantic yearnings behind.

Gideon Westcott left his privileged life in England to make a name for himself in America's wool industry, never expecting to end up with a child. To his dismay, five-year-old Isabella hasn't uttered a word since she lost her mother. The unconventionality of the new governess concerns Gideon-and intrigues him at the same time. But he can't afford distractions.

Well, this is another sweet story by Karen Witemeyer. It was well written, and although I preferred "Short-Straw Bride", this was a great book filled with loveable characters, smiles, and a dash of suspense. I'd highly recommend this to lovers of historical, romantic and British/Texas men... ;)

Kate has become one of my new favorite authors! I really enjoyed this book and I love how she ties in different things concerning Jesus and Bible stories in her novels! She really makes the characters realistic! Looking forward to her new book!

In my opinion this wasn't as good as the authors first book, Tailor made bride, but over all it was a nice read. I didn't have any trouble with it, and the main female character loves to read, so I found that that was fun.

Thank you Lord for Mrs Witemeyer, an author who believes in happily-ever-afters. (Can I get an amen?)
Head in The Clouds follows the adventures of Miss Proctor-- obviously a dreamer and a romantic. But also, a beautiful, smart, sensible and strong woman. (Know anyone like that? Oh, they sure will love the heroine in this book!!) Adelaide enters the household of Gideon Westcott at first as a governess, and then, well let's say, the relationship between these two change (for the better of course -- Girls, get ready to sigh!! )They face MANY challenges-- to give you a clue, they almost come across death many times as the two of them join together to protect Isabella. And believe me, the risks they take to protect this little one, the perseverance and the care they show towards each other-- can only come from true, pure love.
So many beautiful lessons in this one -- overall, such a beautiful book!
If you love fun, good romance, action and adventure and of course if you want depth in a Christian novel, (this is not just some cute girlish story) then grab a copy and get your own "Head in the Clouds"!

I absolutely loved this book! Same goes for all Karen's books but this was most definitively a favorite! Karen knows how to grab hold of her readers and keep them. She also had a great message in each of her books. I saw several key lessons in this book but the one I really and truly loved was that she really made me feel and see that God has a plan for my life. A wonderful and beautiful plan!
Like I said, I loved all of her books and will continue to buy from her. I am so excited for her next book! What is it called...Short-straw Bride? Something like that. I saw the cover and read the description and am already dying to read it! Speaking of covers, all of Karen's books have darling covers. Three people have already mention to me how beautiful they are!
Anyway, I would definitively recommend this book!

Karen Witemeyer has created a charming and slightly suspenseful novel with a heroine to whom book lovers can relate. Don't we all have our "heads in the clouds" at some point when we are engrossed in a novel? There is a bit of Adelaide in each of us. Adelaide Proctor is a fanciful dreamer with a likable and sunny personality. She is a bit impetuous, especially in the beginning of the novel, but she matures and finds inner strength during the course of the plot. Fortunately, Witemeyer presents Adelaide with adversity so that we can see below the bright and whimsical exterior to reveal deeper layers of her personality.
Gideon and Isabella are equally enjoyable characters. I have a difficult time envisioning Gideon as an Englishman, but he does display the admirable integrity and strength that one finds in the great British classics. Isabella is a delight and a little star even in her silence. Some of the most pleasant and heart-warming scenes in the novel feature Isabella with Adelaide, Gideon, or both.
When I initially read the summary of Head in the Clouds, I was instantly reminded of Jane Eyre. A fitting impression since Adelaide makes references to Bronte's classic novel throughout the book. The main premise of Head in the Clouds parallels Jane Eyre, but it is a much lighter read and Adelaide is a more vivacious and outgoing heroine (though not as timeless). Head in the Clouds has the potential to be just another generic, light read, but Witemeyer builds characters with depth and a plot with its share of surprises blended with tender moments. Although I have not read Witemeyer's A Tailor-Made Bride and To Win Her Heart, they are now on my list, along with any of her future novels.

This is my first novel by this author and I truly enjoyed following along the adventures of Gideon and Addie. The descriptions of the scenes and what the characters were experiencing really brought this story alive for me.
*possible spoilers*
The scene with Jose was a little uncomfortable but I felt that Ms. Witemeyer did a great job of keeping it real while not over doing it for a christian read. Though some may argue it was not needed I think showing how Reginald, a man of high English society, would use Jose in his schemes reveals how low and dark he truly is and gave a reason why a man would turn against Westcott and align with Reginald.
Also, I enjoyed how every scene flowed smoothly and added to the storyline. I did not feel like anything was missing and each time I learned something about a character or it added another dimension to the storyline... okay and one last comment... I loved how it was not a simple one time crisis easily fixed up but rather an ongoing increase of tension and danger mixed with romance and laughter... thanks Ms. Witemeyer.

After a would-be-suitor turns out to be less than suitable, Adelaide Proctor heads to Texas following an advertisement for a governess. Both Gideon Westcott and his five-year-old ward, Isabella, immediately take a liking to the less than conventional young governess, who, despite seeming to be in a perpetual dreamland, is the only person who is able to make Isabella laugh and smile. Gideon is in awe that someone has managed to make Isabella open up and learn to enjoy life after the death of her mother, and his admiration for his governess causes him to entertain the idea that maybe, someday she may be more than an employee. However, fate conspires to bring them together far sooner than they'd both planned as they have to work together to protect Isabella from her uncle, who plans to claim the child in order to gain access to her inheritance.
The beautiful cover alone was enough to inspire me to read this book, and I'm so thankful that it enticed me into buying it. While I'll admit that the synopsis doesn't make this story particularly stand out from the myriad of Christian historical romances flooding the genre right now, Karen Witemeyer brings something new and refreshing with her characterisation. I loved the way that Adelaide used imagination and games to bring Isabella out of her shell, and her manner of continually comparing her situations to fairy tales made me smile. I also spend far too much of my time with my head in a book, romanticising and daydreaming about what adventures I may encounter, so Adelaide was the perfect heroine for me. She was a very relatable character, from her desire for a husband and family and her failed attempts at finding the right man to her endearing relationship with Isabella and her devotion to her.
This book had the perfect blend of romance and adventure, with neither overshadowing the other. As Gideon and Adelaide attempted to protect Isabella from her uncle, their relationship deepened and they realised how much they cared for each other. There was only one tiny moment in the scenes where Adelaide and Gideon were defending Isabella when I felt matters had got a little over-the-top, but overall I felt that the adventure was portrayed realistically. The tender romance between Adelaide and Gideon was so sweet to read about, yet flashes of passion were hinted at in a way that was entirely appropriate yet showed the depth of Adelaide and Gideon's love for each other. The final scene at the end of the novel where Gideon and his father return to the women on the ranch is one of my favourites, and truly showed how much Adelaide and Gideo had come to love each other over the course of the book. There was nothing really unusual or unique about the romance in this book, yet it was still one of the most beautiful and realistic stories I've read. I believed every moment of their blossoming relationship, and it made me smile at each milestone the couple passed. Nothing out of the ordinary, but just as a real love story should be.
Karen Witemeyer certainly knows how to create a compelling and enjoyable story. Full of adventure, romance, tender caresses, passion-filled glances, caring family members, cruel villains, secondary characters and plenty of imagination, Head in the Clouds had everything I look for in a good historical romance. Karen has made a well-worn plot entertaining through her skilled characterisation and story-telling and this definitely won't be the only one of her novels that I'll be reading. 10/10

I enjoyed Head in the Clouds just as much as Karen's first book, A Tailor-Made Bride. As a voracious reader, I totally related to Adelaide's daydreaming about the books she's read. Unlike Adelaide, when I need to put the book down to do other things, I can quickly focus on what's going on around me. Adelaide's inability to immediately refocus led to some great incidents in the book. The sheep farm setting, a mute child, a scheming relative, and sparks flying between Adelaide and Gideon combined into a fun frolic through Texas. I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish reading this book in one sitting. Bring on Karen's third book!

I Loved this book..Adelaide was led to believe Henry loved her. So she gives up her job and everything to go to Fort Worth, only to learn that he has a wife and a son. She is devastated but she is only mourning the life she wanted as a wife and mother...she really doesn't love Henry. Looking up to the clouds and praying God sends her a message.
She applies for and gets the job of Governess for Isabella. What a delightful relationship she forms with Izzy...can just picture them as they clean the attic room!
What Adelaide doesn't expect is to fall in Love with Gideon, Izzy's Guardian and new father to her. Love the way things work out for them, but things can't stay perfect...enter the evil Uncle Reginald who will do anything to gain control of the child's fortune.
Once you pick up this wonderful book...you have to keep reading to the end.
The book and the opinions are my own.

The pace of this plot keeps you reading to find out what will happen to the spunky heroine. The hero is not your stereotype of British high society - he has something to prove. The story is a faster-paced and updated Jane Eyre and the characters are more animated.
The characters really make the book, but the plot propels you through this fun book.

This was my first book by Karen Witemeyer, and I LOVED IT! I love her fun style of writing. I just couldn’t help falling in love with Adelaide and Gideon. Adelaide was fun, and spunky, but when she set her mind to something, she was bound and determined to do it! She was a gal that knew what she wanted, and wasn’t afraid to go after it, even though she might be a bit clumsy in the going. Going after what she thought was her man didn’t turn out like she thought it would. That’s what landed her at Gideon’s Sheep Farm interviewing for a job as Governess to his 5 year old daughter. Her mouth also seemed to get her into a lot of trouble too…..like in saying before you think! But it always seemed to turn out for her good.
Gideon…..well he was just adorable from the beginning. I loved him from the first time he saw Adelaide in the barn. Though his and Adelaide’s first few meeting were kind of awkward, he seemed to adore her from the beginning. I just loved Karen’s way of bringing them together in a fun enjoyable way that made you just want to keep reading to see what would happen next. But would Gideon hire Adelaide over the two older and more experienced ladies that were also at the farm for the interview? Even though Adelaide had taught school for a few years, was she capable of taking care of this 5 year old that couldn’t speak?
I admired both Gideon and Adelaide’s relationship with the Lord, and their willingness to seek Him in every decision they needed to make. The way they trusted the Lord when Isabella’s uncle came to claim the child and her inheritance.
This was only Karen Witemeyer’s second book, but I had to check her website again to make sure she had only written 2 books! She truly writes like an experienced writer, and I will sure be reading her other 2 published books.

Lynette Sandler, a dead woman, bears a striking resemblance to reporter Cassandra Chase, who has been assigned to cover the murder. Cassie’s home is repeatedly broken into and her life is threatened. Will she be the next victim?
As Cassie investigates Lynette’s past, she learns their lives have an unusual number of connections and people who knew both of them, including her brother, never mentioned Lynette to her. Both women kept secrets, which may have put them in danger.
Add to the mix Detective McMichaels, who reluctantly falls for the reporter he spars with as they both work to uncover the murderer.
This mystery unfolds like a bizarre nightmare. Readers will keep the pages flying to reach the conclusion and discover who actually killed Lynette and attacked Cassie.

This book far exceeded my expectations! I have read some great books in the past month with alot of substance, so I thought I would pick something out that would be light, relaxing, and fun to read for a change. I saw the title Head in the Clouds and looked at the front and back cover (which was amusing) and I decided to read it. I felt like it would be your typical young lady becomes governess to ranch owner's child, she bumbles her way through, alot of laughs...and they lived happily ever after after! Was I ever wrong!
Adelaide, the main character, finds herself in a shameful situation, so she quickly answers an ad to become a governess to the child of a sheep rancher. Typical storyline, right? Not quite... Adelaide finds out that her new little charge has not spoken since she witnessed the unspeakable murders of her mother and father. My eyes teared up continually with pity for this child and the first time she laughed I smiled. The author has a way of making this story so realistic you can't keep yourself from turning page after page, and not wanting to put the book down.
There are some amusing things in the book that made me smile, and when a near sexual assault occurs my heart was pounding. The author was descriptive, but not offensive in this part of the book, and I could feel this woman's pain. My eyes teared up when a near fatal injury occurs, and does this child ever speak again?...you'll have to read this book and find out. There is alot of intense action at the end when an unscrupulous relative comes to kidnap the little girl.
This book embodied real life...joy, grief... laughter, tears... fear, courage. This is not the typical type of book I normally read, but then again, I guess it was! Fantastic job, Karen Witemeyer!
