Bethany House The Damascus Way, Acts of Faith Series #3

Julia has everything money can buy..except for acceptance by either the Gentiles or the Jews. Her Greek father already has a wife and family, leaving Julia and her Hebrew mother second-class citizens. But when they are introduced to followers of the Way, they become part of that community of believers.

Abigail's brother, Jacob, now a young man, is attempting to discover his own place as a Christian. He is concerned that being more serious about his faith means trading away the exhilaration of his current profession as a caravan guard. Hired by Julia's father to protect the wealthy merchant's caravans on the secretive "Frankincense Trail"-undercover transport of this highly valuable commodity- Jacob also passes letters and messages between various communities of believers. He is alarmed to find out that Julia, hardly more than a girl, is also a messenger. Can their immediate mistrust be put aside to finally bring their hearts together?

I read this book in two days. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the life and country of Israel and surrounding areas; and the daily life scenarios for people. The living with sometimes daily news of fellow believers' sufferings and the actions of the Roman occupiers of the country are also enlightening.
The story itself was a bit slow, but worth it for the examples of what it really takes to live the life. This is still going on today! Militant Islam, rather than Rome, are the antagonists, and they are less obvious, but the fear is just as sudden and the hurt is the same.

Title: The Damascus Way.
Author: Davis Bunn and Janette Oke.
Genre: Christian, Historical Fiction, Biblical Retelling, Romance, Sequel.
Plot: Julia, the only daughter of wealthy merchant Jamal, has everything in life that money can buy. A wonderful palace to call home, fine clothes, plenty of food, servants to wait on her - yet she and her mother Helen live a very lonely existence between her father's visits. When Julia learns the secret why they are shunned, her world is thrown into chaos and only her new-found faith remains steady. A new depth and peace fills her as she embarks on a journey that will change her life in more ways than one, and lead her parents to salvation in Christ.
Meanwhile, Jacob, now a young man ready to take his place in the world, escorts an ill Alban to Jerusalem and leaves him in the care of the few remaining believers there. Taking charge of a secret commission for Jamal, Jacob searches for God's will in his life and hovers in indecision. Jamal, grateful to him and impressed by him, promotes Jacob and gives him another dangerous mission to fulfill. Unknown to Jamal, the believers also entrust Jacob with a secret mission, causing him to become a courier for the persecuted Christians scattered aboard - a dangerous task.
With Saul's persecution of the church increasing, the believers flee from Jerusalem while they still can. One of the last to flee, Abigail and her young daughter Dorcas leave with Alban and a caravan of other believers. Escorting them for the majority of their journey is Linux, once a Roman officer and now a strong faithful brother in the faith. Newly returned from a visit to his homeland, Linux sees the recent changes in the country and wonders with the others what will happen next. He is assigned command of the garrison near the village where Abigail takes up residence and quietly goes about making a change in the hearts of those he comes into contact with.
With several character stories all growing, intertwining and reaching toward the final epic climax, this book will hold your interest to the final page.
Likes/Dislikes: Beautifully written and populated with wonderful characters, some new and some old friends, this is a classic. It was well organized and flowed well between each character shift in viewpoint. I was quite satisfied with the conclusion to Linux's interesting life story, told over the span of the three books in this trilogy. I would have liked at least one more chapter or even just a paragraph on what happened to Jacob and Julia but with my imagination, it's fairly easy to figure out. All in all, I highly enjoyed this book!
Rating: PG-14 and up, mainly for reading level. Highly recommended to all audiences!

I loved being able to recognize names from Scripture and to experience what it was like for them. It was refreshing to try a new type of fiction as well. Unfortunately I chose to read the 3rd in the set instead of the 1st...my mistake but none the less I am enjoying the 2nd in the set as well. It also has helped me contemplate scripture in a deeper sense. Great book!!

I enjoyed this book very much. It gives insight to the possible everyday life of men and women whom we have read about in the Bible. It helped to remind me that those men and women had lives with joys and problems an disappointments such as we have today.

I have always wondered what life was like for Believers in the early days of the church. As I read this book ( and the two that came before it, "The Centurion's Wife" and "The Hidden Flame" I feel as though I am given a glimpse as to how it might have been. I read these books - knowing they are fiction - but the biblical and historical truths - that are in place within the stories - are eye opening and encouraging to me as I see over and over again - "there is nothing new under the sun" and the struggles new Believers faced then - are so similar to what we face now. Personally, I love this genre and time period. After reading the stories, I am compelled to reread the scripture that is referenced and try to find more historical data of the real to life characters.
I thought the books were very well done. I believe Christians are called to 'encourage one another' and these books are an encouragement to me and my faith. My time was well spent as I was transported to the early days of the Church in reading these books.

I had read the first two books in this series and couldn't wait for this one! I felt myself right there, involved in the birth of Christianity. Besides being a great book to read, I learned much about the followers of the Way, the struggles that they faced, and how they were caught between many opposing forces.

I don't know what to do. This is a great book. Started #3 this a.m. and just had to keep reading until I finished it the afternoon. Was thinking that it had another book but was disappointed that I had finished the series. I have enjoyed reading books by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke. Will recommend their books both together and by each. Buy their books as often and I see them. Great books.

I have ready all three books in the series. This one highlights so well how nothing has changed since Christ died - the first Christians struggled to live their lives without his presence too.

Julia has always deeply loved her merchant father. Though he rarely spends time with his family and is often traveling for business, she is a devoted daughter and the apple of her father’s eye. She can’t understand why the citizens of Damascus shun her and her mother and when the truth is revealed Julia struggles with bitterness even as she is drawn towards a new and radical faith.
Meanwhile, Abigail (book 2) flees from Jerusalem as persecution increases in intensity while her younger brother Jacob finds himself drawn into a mysterious and dangerous web of intrigue on two disparate fronts. How is God going to connect these believers together in their journeys to serve Him, and what monumental events will they witness along the road to Damascus?
The Damascus Way is the closing installment in the Acts of Faith series – a collaboration between well-known authors Davis Bunn and Janette Oke. Both a rich and satisfying conclusion to this series of biblical fiction, this novel takes readers alongside the lives of first-century Christians who are witnesses of some of the watershed events of the churches early years.
The only ‘off note’ that I found was some odd references to a burning in the breast of some of the characters. Having come from a Mormon background I felt a bit odd reading this and I’m not sure why it was included. I don’t know if either of the authors are LDS, and maybe I’m being oversensitive, but it did strike me as odd and unnecessary.
Like the other books in the series, characters that readers have become acquainted with in past books resurface in this one to play minor supporting roles in the story’s weave. However, it is still possible to read this work as a stand-alone novel. I found for myself that being familiar with the faith stories of Abigail and Alban (from the second and first books respectively) added to the depth and richness of this novel.
It is here that I glimpsed the fullness of the vision that Bunn and Oke have created with this series. Though it moves more slowly than much of the fiction that I read I could more clearly see the webs of community, the closely woven bonds of companionship and love amongst the believers depicted in the pages of these books. That full, rich, emotive writing is truly delightful and makes this book well worth the read.

Davis Bunn and Janette Oke, two of my favorite authors, present an authentic-feeling story fleshed out from the book of Acts. Readers experience the life and struggles of the early church as followers of the Way face increasing persecution. Travelling also brings dangers such as merciless bandits and fierce sandstorms, which well up like desert tsunamis that continue for days.
This compelling novel stands well on its own, even though it is the third in a series and continues the saga of some of the characters from previous books. The Damascus Way focuses mainly on Julia, daughter of a wealthy Greek merchant and a Hebrew mother. Throughout the tale, encounters with the Lord change lives. Even Roman soldiers are transformed by this Man of Peace.
As Julia said, “The closer we come to Jesus, the more we recognize his perfect love. And the more we see how far removed we are from this perfection. He calls to us with that love and forgiveness. He invites us to grow, to become more than we ever could be on our own.” This book can assist in that process. I recommend the series. It has love, faith, adventure, history—all the elements of a good story.

The Damascus Way is the final book in the Acts of Faith trilogy. Yet again, this story reminded me how dangerous being a member of the early church really was. Persecution came from all sides. Yet the believers' faith and network of followers was strong. Like The Centurion's Wife and The Hidden Flame, this story drew me in and didn't let go until I finished the book, leading to several late nights of feverish reading. I was a little disappointed in the way the authors chose to end the story (and the series), but this was still a wonderful way to while away a few nights.

This Bible-based series allows you to feel that you are more a part of the Bible stories and people that you've read about for years. While, it may be fictitious, it does not add any truths that are not from the Bible itself. I love it!!!

I cannot sing the praises of this book enough. Well in fact the whole series is awesome. I felt as I was there in these times. It was well written and I hope there will be more in this series. They have really done their homework and made these books seem so real. We read these stories in the bible and wonder about what else happened. And even though these are fiction we can only imagine how they lived, worked, continued on in the faith, etc. And when you pick up these kind of reads and it gives you kind of an idea. It's exciting. See I told you I cannot shut up about these books. So here's the thing, you just need to read them for yourselves. I know they won't disappoint.
