A nice collection of prayers that generations of Amish and Mennonites have prayed. The thoughts expressed in this collection bring the reader back to the time when the Anabaptists were part of the Reformation in the 16th Century.

Beverly Lewis is one of my favorite authors for Amish fiction and in this case, non-fiction. In her book, Amish Prayers, she has compiled a wonderful collection of Amish prayers.
What I love about this book is that the prayers are categorized in different sections. So, if you feel you need encouragement with having gratitude, or if you need comfort, there are separate sections for those topics, as well as others.
The prayers are wonderfully encouraging and humble. I also love that there is a Bible verse correlating with every prayer so that you can also be looking at scripture for guidance.
The book has quaint Amish-life photos throughout. The book itself is smaller in size- perfect for a bedside table.
I really enjoyed this book and think it is a great encouragement to have.
I was kindly given a copy of this from Bethany House Publishers for my honest review.

Amish Prayers

Beverly Lewis
"A ONE-OF-A-KIND COLLECTION OF INSPIRING PRAYERS USED BY AMISH AND MENNONITES FOR OVER 300 YEARS!"
I was so excited to receive a copy of this little piece of history. "A selection of prayers from Die Ernsthafte Christenpflicht is readily available in English." Amish and Mennonite families have been using these prayers since 1708!
I loved this little book!! I understand the concern some people have with prayer books, that we will become mechanical in our prayers and pray without heart or thought, but I believe that can happen whether you are using a prayer book or not.
I couldn't help but think that these little prayers would make great discussion starters for family devotions. Also, some times you just don't know where or how to pray, again these prayers could be such a wonderful comfort in those times.
"We ask you Holy Father, to give us grace that we may live and walk in such a way that we may always be recognized as your servants, who are waiting for their Lord. Whenever you start the wedding feast, may you find us ready and willing, Lord, every hour of every day. Amen"
Can't you see a wonderful discussion coming out of that prayer??!!??
I could share prayer after prayer but then you wouldn't need to buy the book.
In this little book you'll find prayers for comfort, guidance, unity and strength. Not to mention 8 other topics. For a small book it is filled with so much. Did I mention I loved it!

Beverly Lewis who is a fantastic author of Christian Fiction and Amish Fiction, has compiled a devotion book titled Amish Prayers. These prayers have been translated from the German prayer book Die Ernsthafte Christenpflicht that Amish and Mennonites both hold as precious possessions even today. With each prayer is a bible scripture that is relevant to the prayer. The prayers are conveniently divided into categories such as: Prayers for Comfort, Prayers for Strength, Prayers of Humility, Prayers for Unity along with eight other categories.
This book is well organized and beautifully illustrated. It is a wonderful devotional for personal use or group study. It will be an asset to any library, I am glad to have it in mine.
I received this book free from Bethany House a division of Baker Publishing Group as part of their Blogger Review program. I was not required to write a positive review.

This lovely little book has delicate black and white sketches by Katie Polley which really help create a unique mood. Divided into sections, the prayers address such issues as comfort, repentance, purity of heart etc. I found the traditional phrasing resonated with me. It seems so reverent and humble and after all the Amish books I have read over the past year, the formal language just felt right somehow.
So -- what would you do with a little prayer book like this? I think it would make a great gift. Here are a few ideas to make it an extra special one:
•For a Bridal Shower gift -- add Amish Prayers to a basket with homemade banana bread wrapped in a couple of useful tea towels. Make a card that says Food for the body; food for the soul!
•For a just-because gift -- Get an inexpensive plaque at your scripture bookstore that reads: "Prayer Changes Things" to go along with Amish Prayers.
•For a gift for someone convalescing -- pair Amish Prayers with your choice of an Amish fiction book.
•For a hostess gift -- A few cuttings from your flower garden along with this little book would bring a smile to your friend's face. OR -- Visiting friends/relatives out of town over the summer? Leave a copy of Amish Prayers on your pillow just before you leave. That way your friend will find a sweet surprise to remind her of your visit after you've left.
•For a Father's Day gift -- Though you might think Amish Prayers would be enjoyed most by women, the fact is the prayers are the meat-and-potatoes kind. Simple, heartfelt and to the point -- perfect for a Christian dad. And you could enhance the gift further by including a letter to your dad highlighting ways he has built up your faith. What dad wouldn't like that kind of personal touch?!

When the opportunity to review this book came up, I almost turned it down. I’m not a fan prayer books – canned prayers as I usually call them – but I was intrigued by the idea of Amish prayers.
I wasn’t disappointed. The prayers are beautiful and reverent, and glorifying to God. There is a real sense of the awe we should have when coming into the presence of the Lord in prayer. They are so full of doctrine that though they are short, I’ve found myself reading one and pondering it for the rest of the day. They are grouped together by type of prayer and each one has a Scripture to accompany it.
A true Amish prayer book translated into English from the original German, this prayer book has become a treasured addition to my library.
I must mention that I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House for review purposes.

I generally do not favor prayer compilations, as we tend to consider them more than the Bible – a practice that I disagree with, as I believe our prayer should be a personal communication with our Creator. However, I Mrs. Lewis’s novels, which depict the Amish people with straightforwardness and a caring heart that reflects their deep communion with God. This sparked my curiosity about this book, knowing that the compilation would be made by someone knowledgeable in the matter, and despite that
No wonder why those characters are so rich and faithful! With prayers like the ones in this compilation, we witness the validity and authority of the Word of God. It includes prayers said in different times of the day, like breakfast, in different moments of life, like death, and even in different attitudes, like thankfulness. Each prayer has a Bible reference from which it takes its inspiration, reminding us how Biblical principles can be applied to different aspects of our life.
There are not enough words to fully describe how special this compilation is. I hold it, and I know I’m holding something special and unique – that is how powerful the Word of God is, the source of inspiration for the prayers.
The essence and main beauty of this book is its expression of trust and faith in the Almighty God, always aligning our whole self to Him. This precious little book reminds us that prayer is a thing from the heart.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for a review. This did not bias my opinion on the book, nor on the author.

Amish Prayers is a collection of prayers from the centuries-old Amish prayer book. They have been translated into English from the original German for the first time. This little volume is one to treasure for years to come.
Die Ernsthafte Christenpficht has been treasured by Amish and Mennonite hearts for over 300 years. Amish Prayers, compiled and introduced by Beverly Lewis, pairs these beautiful prayers with Scripture verses and lovely drawings. There are prayers for a new day, for divine guidance, prayers of gratitude and of repentance, for comfort, of praise, prayers for strength, purity of heart, and unity, prayers of humility and of submission, and prayers in the evening.
Whether you use this book by yourself or with a group, I feel that the prayers will strengthen your faith and will help your relationship with God to deepen. As I have read Amish Prayers, it has come to be an important part of my daily devotions.
One of the prayers reads as follows:
Holy Spirit, capture our hearts with your loving strength. Fill them with heavenly comfort and joy so that we may always rest assured in God and face our concerns with joy and contentment, and so as children of God overcome this evil world. Praise be to you forever and ever, Holy Spirit, along with God the Father and the Son! Amen.
I was given this book for free by the publisher as part of the blogger book review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

The prayers of individuals can reveal much of their heart, struggles, and perspective on life. The same can be true for a group of people using a prayer book for personal and communal devotional times. By reading through the prayers compiled by Beverly Lewis in Amish Prayers, I have gained a greater insight to the faith of the Amish and Mennonites.
Amish Prayers is a selection of translated prayers from the original German prayer book, Die Ernsthafte Christenpflicht. The prayers are grouped together by themes, such as repentance, comfort, and unity. Each prayer, accompanied by a related Bible verse, is printed on a single page. The short length allows for a quick read. However, the simple prayers are quite meaningful and reverent. Interdispersed among the prayers are pencil drawings of Amish people or things. These simple illustrations depict the peace of the Amish lifestyle and contribute to the overall tranquility of reading through the book.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the Amish and Mennonite faith.
Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for review.
