Bethany House To Have and to Hold: Bridal Veil Island Series, #1

When Audrey Cunningham's father proposes that they move to Bridal Veil Island, where he grew up, she agrees, thinking this will help keep him sober and close to God. But they arrive to find wealthy investors buying up land to build a grand resort on the secluded island--and they want the Cunninghams' acreage.

Contractor Marshall Graham can't imagine why the former drinking buddy of his deceased father would beckon him to Bridal Veil Island. And when Boyd Cunningham asks him to watch over Audrey, Marshall is even more confused. He has no desire to be saddled with caring for this fiery young woman who is openly hostile toward him. But when Audrey seems to be falling for another man--one who has two little girls Audrey adores--Marshall realizes she holds more of his heart than he realized. Which man will Audrey choose? And can she hold on to her ancestral property in the face of overwhelming odds?

The title of this book kind of tells you the end of the story. However, getting there is entertaining and a good read. As always, I love the spiritual emphasis.

After the War Between the States, and the death of her grandmother, Audrey Cunningham left Pennsylvania with her father to return to the southern home where he was raised. She hoped that the move would improve her father’s declining health, and that they would be able to live in peace. Unfortunately, after they arrived on Bridal Veil Island, Georgia, Audrey and her father learned of the terrible news that they would be losing their happy home due to back taxes that they could not afford to pay. In order to save their little piece of heaven, Audrey’s father allowed wealthy investors to come and build a resort on the island.
Audrey was perfectly fine with the arrangement until she learned who the foreman in charge of the project would be. Marshall Graham was the son of the man Audrey blamed for the poor health her father was now enduring. How could this man be invited, by her father of all people, to not only join but head up the building of the resort?!
Marshall finds himself drawn to this woman who, for some reason, has a grudge against him. When her father asks him to care for her on his deathbed, Marshall agrees and grants the man his dying wish. When the resort construction becomes a target of sabotage and destruction, Marshall finds his promise put to the task. Can he protect her when the danger is possibly as close to her as the boarders within her own house??
Enter the land of Post War Southern life, and feel the passion, adventure, and enjoy the various, and even comical, personalities brought to life in this wonderful book, “To Have and to Hold” It will be a permanent addition to my ever-growing collection of great reads!

Tracie and Judith have yet again proved to be a great writing team in their latest series together. To Have and To Hold is book one in the Bridal Veil Island series. This was a wonderful story that contains mystery, history, and love. A great combo, in my opinion. While this is historical fiction and Bridal Veil is a fictitious island, references are made to real places and names of real people. I love it that Tracie and Judy have shared a little in the back of the book about how they came to write this series as well as what places and people in their stories are fictional and/or real.
I really enjoyed this book, but I don't want to give too much away, so just trust me --you'll LOVE this book!

I have to admit I was excited about this book even before I read it. Since these two authors rank among my favorites, and the Georgia coast is my family's favorite vacation spot, I had a good idea that I'd enjoy this story---and I was not disappointed! :) Since I am personally familiar with that area, I know the authors did an excellent job of researching. The fictional island and characters "came alive" for me, and I am honestly looking forward to the other books in this series. ~ I'm so thankful Bethany House sent this book to me for review, because I highly recommend TO HAVE AND TO HOLD. Five stars!!!

Audrey Cunningham lives on Bridal Veil Island, Georgia with her father Boyd. They moved there from Pennsylvania in hopes that her father would stay sober. When wealthy investors want to build on Bridal Veil Island for a resort, Audrey feels her solitude being threatened.
The investors hire Marshall Graham to oversee the construction of the resort. Marshall is the son of one of Boyd’s old drinking buddies. Audrey has heard that Marshall is as addicted to alcohol as her father had been. So she wants nothing to do with him. What she doesn’t know is that her father has been writing letters to Marshall asking him to come to Bridal Veil Island. He wants Marshall to promise to look after Audrey. Marshall doesn’t want to be responsible for someone who thinks the worst of him.
After construction begins on the resort someone is sabotaging the work site. Little things at first, then they become progressively dangerous. As they try to discover who is behind the sabotage, Audrey and Marshall realize they are starting to develop an interest in each other. Audrey has to let go of her preconceived ideas about Marshall. Marshall has to give Audrey the space and time she needs to let her see for herself what kind of person he is.
This book starts slow and it took me awhile to get into it. I would classify this a romance novel with a little bit of mystery thrown in.
Bethany House Publishing gave me this book for an honest review. I was not compensated in anyway.

I must say while I've not been a fan of historical fiction, I am fast becoming one. I LOVED this book. The setting for this series is in the south on a set of fictional islands near Georgia.
The focus throughout the book on faith was wonderful. The authors specifically quoted scriptures (a lot from Proverbs). And, the Bible and prayer was a source of guidance for the characters throughout! I loved how the authors demonstrated freedom in Christ from bondage such as alcoholism is possible. They also gave several example of how God speaks to us through that 'still small voice'. So, two thumbs up for that.
I also loved the purity of the main character, Audrey. She had never been kissed before Marshall. So, I feel very comfortable allowing my teen to read it.
The plot is engaging also. There's financial dilemma, death, suspense, mild violence, sorrow, joy, humor, love---all rolled into one wonderful read!! I'm sure this series will be a favorite for historical romance readers. I didn't want it to end! Next book in the series, please!!
I received a free copy from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my review.

Tracie Peterson has done it again! Although the story starts a little slowly, I still enjoyed it immensely.

This is the kind of story you just want to sink into and never come out of! Love the setting, the descriptions, the whole ambiance of the read! Miller and Peterson have done their research and it's such a unique time and place in history which made it all the more fascinating.
Engaging characters took hold of my heart right from the start. Aunt Thora is a hoot and soon became a favourite. She supplied levity and surprising insights throughout the book. Audrey is a remarkable mixture of genteel backbone and Marshall has his hands full trying to change her misguided opinion of him. Audrey makes snap judgements; Marshall opinions are based on slow and steady reflection. What a contrast! It's no wonder fireworks ensue!
Add in the sinister element and a dose of suspense and you'll find yourself lost in an excellent read.
