sorry- but the heroine of this story was about the 'dumbest' one I've met in awhile. She seems to be too dumb to avoid danger and insists on having her own way and her stubborn ways seem to be looked on as 'cute' and 'endearing'. Why any man wants a 'bossy' woman who thinks she doesn't need input from others and is so smart that nobody else can 'tell her what to do' (including God)- I don't know. The plot had its points of interest but I could see a lot of things 'coming' so no great surprises in how things turned out. If your time is short you can afford to skip this one.

It was a good story but not the sit on the edge of your chair kind. I felt at times it lost momentum and I got bogged down in words. Overall it was good.

I bought the Kincaid bride series (3 volumes) while I do like the characters and story I did feel the details were repeated through the story too many times. I don't believe I needed the history updates that many times -I felt like "let's get on with the story" several times with each book.

This book and the 2 following are very good light reading about 3 brothers in the Colorado Territory just after the civil war. There is a lot of humour in the situations that the brothers and 'the women' get into and out of. An interesting slant on romance in the old west makes this series a delightful read.

I really like the idea, and the characters could have been great, but...it just kept circling around the same phrases over and over again. The plot and characters were not developed enough to be believable. I really tried to like it, but not so much!

I'll start by saying that I think every author in Christian Fiction deserves to be applauded one way or another. The idea for this book was creative, BUT the following are my honest opinions about Out of Control.
I love reading... and if I ever give up on a book, you can be sure that I've given it MANY tries- and this is one of those rare cases. Out of Control could have been WAY better!
I agree with the reviewers that are saying that it lacked a flow, a rhythm. A lot of times, that got me confused because, for example, an information with no detail would come out of nowhere in a paragraph, leaving many unanswered questions behind. And there's also the fact that the characters' personalities could have been more fully developed. For example, if the hero is to be stubborn, then let him be stubborn... so much that readers might come to resent him. (think about a good book you've read, where the characters almost felt alive.) Rafe was supposed to be the stubborn one in this, but not all of his actions reflected that.
The book is also a bit scary... (uh, gulp) because there's a whole thing with dark caves, and a grizzly looking man, whose practically demon possessed.. yeah, just sayin'...
BUT, I did laugh out loud more than once while reading - so Mary has a good sense of humour- and I'm opened to the idea of giving another one of her books a try...

A fantastic book with a dry humor that kept me laughing nonstop. At the same time, this author hides truths that makes this book wonderfully down to earth revealing a God who accepts us flawed humans and loves us with our shortcomings.

Out Of Control by Mary Connealy is Book 1 in The Kincaid Brides series from Bethany House. It is a Christian romance set in Colorado territory in 1866.
Rafe Kincaid had returned to the cavern one more time trying to overcome his fears. Going there caused him to relive the terrible day of the accident but instead of hearing the cries of his brother Seth he heard a woman screaming. Rafe facing his fears head on manages to get the woman, Julia Gilliland, to safety.
Rafe proceeded to try to find out more about this upset woman. Julia claimed she was the daughter of the owner of the general store in Rawhide, however Rafe knew the owner. He also knew he did not have a daughter named Julia.
As late as it was getting Rafe managed to convince Julia that she would be comfortable at the ranch until morning light, promising he would take her home, if they could find home. When they arrived at the ranch Ethan met them on the front porch, which totally surprised Rafe, since this was his first time home since the accident.
After Julia had calmed down her interest was directed towards the cavern. She was determined that yes she had to get home, her family would be worried but her main concern was her return trip to the cavern. She had found fossils there like she had read about in her books, but the problem was there was also something else there. It was a man who had scared her to death, so she had to figure out a way to get Rafe to help her.
Does Rafe and Julia ever work out their differences? Does Julia ever realize the truth about her Dad? Does Rafe and Ethan come to terms about the accident? And who is the crazy man in the cavern? Find the answers to these questions and a lot more in this book.
This was a good book but I found it a little hard to follow at times. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance with a little twist or books set in the west.
I received this book free from Bethany House a division of Baker Publishing Group as part of their Blogger Review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Kincaid Brides Book 1
Stubborn, determined, and bossy, describes both Rafe Kincaid and Julia Gilliland. Rafe, determined to protect Julia and her family and Julia, with an indomitable spirit, refusing his assistance. Boy do the sparks fly!
Set in the wilds of Colorado in times long past, Mary’s story line will keep you guessing with each turn of the page. Her characters have plenty of challenges from the past that come back with stark reality.
This is a great story for an afternoon read. So saddle up, bring your guns, and off we’ll ride!

Mary has a natural flair when it comes to writing western romantic comedy. Crisp dialogue kept me turning the pages as fast as I could gallop from one to the other.
The characters in Out of Control are flawed and funny, annoying and adorable! I laughed & laughed, and really did wonder how Julia and Rafe were going to end up a happy couple. Talk about two people being total opposites! But, Mary skillfully brings them together in a satisfying and big-sigh ending :)
Even though I didn't really feel connected to Julia, I did admire the tenacity and strength that she developed over the years due to her not-so-great home life. While wholeheartedly embracing what she believes to be God's calling (and it certainly wouldn't have been an easy one in her day) she survives seemingly insurmountable circumstances!
Rafe is the oldest of three brothers, therefore he has the typical oldest child syndrome happening. He's bossy and thinks he knows what's best for everyone, even Julia. His heart is always in the right place even if his attitude isn't. I like him!
This novel took me deep into the heart of some fascinating cave exploring, making me wonder if Mary's done a little of that. I was very interested in that aspect of the book.
I'm choosing not to discuss the secondary characters since we'll be meeting them more fully in their own stories. I can't wait to learn more about Seth and Ethan, the younger Kincaid Brothers, and their future brides. Mary has successfully roped me in to this series. Be careful! You just might get roped, too ;)
Bethany House provided the book in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive one, just express my opinion of the book. No other compensation has been received.

Out of Control was a great, page-turning read. Julia Gilliland is a book-smart young woman, and not nearly as helpless as independent rancher Rafe Kincaid thinks. They work together to solve the mystery surrounding a menacing, shadowy cave dweller. However, they both have a stubborn streak a mile wide … which hinders their progress and threatens to put both of them in danger.
I liked that it wasn’t a sappy romance, but rather a romance with a hefty dose of adventure, suspense and mystery woven into the story. I also really enjoyed the time period of the story, as well as the author’s descriptive portrayal of the rugged beauty of Colorado.
The author injected a few gender stereotypes into the characters’ thinking, which added some humorous moments to the story. The main characters’ perception of each other – a slightly nutty young woman fascinated with old dinner remnants and a bossy, uncultured rancher – are quite funny. Both think the other just doesn’t get it.
Although, when you think about it, the stereotypes seem old-fashioned, but it probably wasn’t uncommon in that time period for a man to think of a woman as delicate like a “hothouse flower” or prone to “leaking saltwater” from her eyes.
Part of the mystery was solved at the end of the book and part was not. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see how the story continues to unfold!
Note: I received a copy of this book at no charge from Bethany House Publishers in return for an honest review.

Stranded in the caverns when someone removes the rope she uses to climb in and out, Julia Gilliland begins to hear cackling voices. Is it any wonder she's screaming hysterically when a local rancher happens to ride by?
Rafe Kincaid has been running the Colorado family ranch alone since his parents died and his brothers left. He avoids the cavern where his youngest brother nearly lost his life years before until the day he is scouting nearby and hears a woman screaming for help from its depths. The rollup ladder the Kincaid boys used is still hidden under a rock. Rafe descends into utter blackness, feeling the old panic welling up, only to discover the woman has lost her senses. He kisses her to make her stop fighting him...and it works. He kinda likes it, then he's horrified to think she might be sixty and ugly.
She's not. But she's just as stubborn and controlling as he is, determined to go back into the caverns she'd grown to love to more closely examine fossils she's found. She's certain she can get articles printed in scientific journals back east, thereby providing some income to free herself from her father, who leaves Julia and her young stepmother (pregnant and with a toddler) to fend for themselves in a wilderness shack for days on end.
Rafe sees he needs to protect headstrong Julia from her mystery enemy, whether she wants him to or not, and probably the only way is to marry her, whether she wants him to or not. Julia doesn't want protection, and she certainly doesn't want to marry a controller like Rafe-not when she likes to be the one calling the shots. Instead, she has dreams of being loved someday. Could she be falling for the bossy rancher?
Mary Connealy has a humorous voice that truly comes into its own in this historical western romance pitting two controlling characters against each other. She's rapidly become one of my favorite authors of this genre because she can pull off all this snark while telling a suspenseful story. Anything by Mary Connealy is on my highly recommended list, and Out of Control, the first in a new trilogy about the Kincaid brothers, is no exception. I look forward to the continuing tales of Ethan and Seth.

Out Of Control by Mary Connealy
In exchange for a review, Bethany House Publishers sent me a free copy of this book. It is Book 1 of the Kincaid Brides Series. Rafe Kincaid is the eldest of 3 brothers. He is used to being in control and giving the orders. When he finds Julia Gilliland trapped in a cavern near his ranch, his life changes. She is fiesty and independent, and enjoys exploring caves for fossils while her father runs a saloon in town. When her father dies, and the Kincaid brothers realize there is someone after Julia, Rafe aims to keep her safe and catch the tracker. He has always been in control of his feelings, but around Julia he can't think straight. There was alot of adventure in this book and I liked the time period of the mid-to-late 1800's. For someone interested in the exploration of caves this has many descriptions of the inside of caves. The men and women alike are strong and hard-working characters. There wasn't really any mention of having a personal relationship with God. They talk about a curcuit riding preacher, but other than that, nothing about the importance of God in your life. It was one of those so-so books that I may read the other books to come in the series, but if I don't, it's okay too.
