The issue of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 did not do away with segregation. It did not do away with racism. And in some areas of the South, it did not even do away with slavery.
Sold into slavery at age 5 in 1916 along with his two sisters, Robert Sadler lived on a plantation where he witnessed and lived the brutality of slavery years after it was supposed to have been abolished. Owned by a Ku Klux Klan member, Robert was beaten and worked sunup to sundown in the house and in the cotton fields. His sisters were sold as well; separated from the eldest, his sister Pearl cared for him until her death at the age of 14 after being gang-raped, repeatedly burned with a poker, and sent back out into the fields sick. Seeing other slaves beaten and attempted to be hung for escaping, Robert continued to work until one day, he walked down the driveway, down the road, and escaped.
This amazing story follows Robert throughout his life, from his early days with no skills, education, or wealth, to how he worked at obtaining an education, moved up north, and grew in his relationship with God. A powerful tale of forgiveness and the strength that trusting in God can bring, Robert Sadler's story is one not soon forgotten. 299 pages, softcover.

I read this book when it was first published and was sad when it went out of print. I bought 6 copies when I saw it in print again.
This story is extremely difficult and dark in some places, and I typically do not read anything with that kind of sadness. But it's necessary to see the darkness in order to see that the light at the end is even greater than the darkness.
You won't be able to put this book down, you won't be able to read it without crying, and you won't be able to believe the extent of Christ's wonderful forgiveness when you are finished.
Robert Sadler is a Saint who is well-known in heaven even though few know his name on earth.

This book is a winner! I met Mr. Sadler before I ever read his book. He was a very humble man and loved the Lord. His testimony is very moving, once you start reading the book you will not want to put it down. His papa sold him into slavery when he was a little boy. He experienced heart ache but also the love of Jesus. A very well written book. I last saw him in the mid 1970's before he went home to be with the Lord. This is probably the 5th or 6th book of The Emancipation of Robert Sadler I have bought because I keep giving them away.

The Power True Story of a Twentieth-Century Plantation Slave
Robert Sadler was sold into slavery by his own father at the tender age five years. He was separated from his siblings, endured horrendous treatment, witnessed extreme torture and had to work under deplorable conditions. “Hatred, bitterness and suffering was all we knew. There was nothing to help us forget the anguish and torture we were bound to.” Yet, by the grace of God he was able to forgive his father and his captors and live in peace. He dedicated most of his adult life to telling people about Jesus and their need of a Saviour.
As heartbreaking as this story is, it is also a tremendous testament to the resiliency of the spirit of the African American people. I was also touched how they lived in heartrending poverty while enslaved and even after, but still helped each other in whichever way they could and encouraged each other with scripture and song: “The church meetings where we sang our stories to the Lord were our only solace and hope… we tried to find peace in the fact that this earthly life is short.” I have a whole new appreciation for Negro Spirituals!
