This is one novel I did not want to put down until I finished it, once I had started reading. I knew that Legal Thrillers do that for me, and so it was a while after I got it I read it. And I was right. This is a edge of the seat type of novel, drama on almost every page, drawing in the innocent, as well as targetting the guilty. With twists and turns and ups and downs and arounds throughout the story, it is difficult, though not impossible to figure out who wants the lawyer and client quiet. And yet, I continued reading to find out how far they were going to go to do this, and why. Was there really a deposit slip that had been buried so far in bureaucracy that it would not see the light of day, or was there no money? And why did it matter to Erin and Jared?
This is a well told novel that captivated my mind even when I was not reading it, and even now, after I have finished it. The book ends with Jessie, Jared's secretary, receiving a call for another case, and Jared accepting it. I will be watching for this next one with anticipation.

Since I did not receive a review copy, I will say that I do have some concerns. - Still, the book IS a very good read.
Bethany Hs. may be a "Christian" publisher, but in the past I have found that doesn't seem to mean too much. So the missing witness or stronger mention of faith is not so big a deal.
My concern is with the language in anything written by or for Christians. Pg. 62 has a totally superfluous description. Whether the author himself or the editor(s) are responsible - sorry, that lost the fifth star.
Another reviewer already mentioned Erin's absence at the bank. I wonder how the SUV turned into a sedan. (: )
Not to spoil things but the last couple of sentences in the book seem to indicate another book? I hope so.

Book Summary: This courtroom drama centers around Erin Larson-who recently lost her estranged father. As she goes through his estate, she finds a deposit slip made out to the local bank in the amount of ten million dollars. The bank claims the deposit slip is a fake, but determined to find out more about her father's life, she hires an attorney to investigate. Threats, lies, and rumors not only threaten Erin's life, but drive multiple attorneys and investigators away.
Finally, she finds an attorney that is willing to take on the case no matter the cost-Jared Neaton. Together, they, along with Jared's assistant and friends, work to piece together what happened-and determine once and for all the truth about the deposit slip.
My Take: You know, I love a good courtroom drama, but I have to admit, I was quite disappointed with this one. I thought the idea was good, and I liked the characters (both the good, and the bad ones), but the pace of the book wasn't great. The first 300 pages focused on how impossible the case was-to the point that I was getting bored, and really just wanted to get to what was going to happen! Finally, things started to happen, and it was almost like an afterthought to the rest of the story. It seemed a quick summary to try and tie things up super fast and be done. I would have loved to have had that part of the book drawn out a little more and taken more time to get to the conclusion. Also, for being a courtroom drama (at least that was what I thought it would be), there was very little time actually spent in the courtroom, which was kind of a bummer for me too.
So, my bottom line for this book-good story idea, good characters-but kind of a snoozer until after page 300. Maybe skip this one.

I found this book to be captivating from beginning to end. Never boring, the suspense only gets better from chapter to chapter. The author did a great job creating this story. The unexpected always presents its self. As more and more people become involved in uncovering the mystery behind the deposit slip and the efforts to maintain secrecy, the more dangerous it becomes, and an attorney who fights until the end. Even though he is at a financial disadvantage, overwhelmed by the large amount of documents received for review, yet, he has the determination to keep moving forward. Desperation and hardship leads to unfavorable results for one character in particular. I enjoyed reading this book at times becoming very anxious about the mystery behind the millions and it was not as I anticipated. As I mentioned earlier, the unexpected always presents its self and I am a bit confused about how Paul Larson was paid such a large sum. Overall, great book. Thanks Bethany House Publishing for allowing me to review this book at no charge.

Ten million dollars is missing after Erin Larson's fathers death. As she searches his deposit box at the bank, she finds a worn and tattered deposit slip saying he deposited that money in the bank. The bank has no record-now what. That is the storyline from a new book by Todd Johnson.
Erin has hired lawyers in the past to help, but of no avail. She hires Jared Neaton who really wants to help but wants the money more. He is up against a shady law firm who is making Jared's life and work extremely hard. He wants to help Erin, but he could lose everything or he could gain a lot of money. As he digs deeper he discovers something very dangerous and the people who want this to never come to trial are making threats to both Jared and Erin.
I found this a very good legal thriller, especially since the author is a lawyer. The storyline kept my interest, but one thing bothered me. Bethany is a Christian publisher and I found very little Christian emphasis or God working in their lives and that is what keeps me reading Christian fiction. Otherwise, this is a well written book.
Thank you Bethany Publishers for sending me this book free just for my honest opinion.

I must admit that this genre does not always appeal to me, so it needs to be a very special book to grab my attention. Todd does this very capably on page one of his book!! I opened the book, expecting a somewhat lengthy introduction - there was NONE!! This story just jumps out and attacks you from the very first page!! Erin, the main character , is seated in a vault of a bank and the description of the surroundings alone, makes you want to continue to read. Todd describes the smells, the sensations she feels, the looks, with such precision, you feel as if you are there with her. Erin's feelings are expressed in such a way that you feel for her and want to get to know her better. What a fantastic beginning to this novel!!
Immediately after her father's death, Erin discovers a slim piece of paper in a safety deposit box- with an absolutely unbelievable amount of amount on it. She IS rich, however, and it is a BIG however, the bank claims to have no record of this money. Erin hires lawyers and gets no results, until she meets Jared Neaton. He is on the brink of losing his own tiny firm , after leaving a prestigious one , due to a problem with questionable ethics . Will he , of all people, be able to discover the mystery of the missing money? Is the case worth the risk ? As he becomes more involved with Erin and her case, digging deeper becomes dangerous. There are threats to both he and Erin. How far will they go to and pay to discover the truth?
This book is a page turner from beginning to end. There are constantly new twists thrown in , new mysteries, dangers that are totally unexpected. The depth of the content is not to be outdone. Todd has done his research well on investments and banking systems.
The characters are realistic with problems that surpass what you expect. How they handle them is the interesting part!
A five star book!! Great mystery, great legal thriller!!

Imagine your last parent dies and you find a deposit slip in a safe deposit box you didn’t know existed. A deposit slip with a lot of zeroes. A deposit slip the bank says they don’t have a record of. How far would you go to solve the mystery and are you prepared for the answers you may find?
Todd Johnson prepares and delivers a strong, fast-paced and interesting mystery in The Deposit Slip. One part mystery and one part legal drama, “The Deposit Slip” delivers just the right balance to keep you turning pages. His characters are believable and engaging. It is easy to empathize with Erin Larson and her search for the truth about her recently deceased father. Jared Neaton, an attorney with something to prove and everything on the line, becomes obsessed with the case and risks losing his practice as he searches for answers.
“The Deposit Slip” has enough twists and turns to truly keep you guessing and turning pages. My only quibble with it was the sense of place. I never truly felt I could picture most of the settings in my imagination but even that didn’t keep me from truly enjoying “The Deposit Slip.”
If you’re fond of legal dramas and/or mysteries, I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy this book…although that’s not a guarantee that you can take to the bank!

Erin Larson left her father's farm and the town of Ashley when she was in high school; now she's back to mourn her father's death and to sort out his estate. When she finds The Deposit Slip for $10,000,000 in his safety deposit box, she is determined to find out where it came from and where the money is now. Only, the bank denies that the deposit exists, and no lawyer will see the case through, until Jared comes along. Jarod has ties to the town of Ashley, and he needs a big case worth a lot of money, but can he make it through this case without going broke or endangering the lives of those involved? Will Erin find out where her father might have come across 10 million dollars?
The premise of this story was intriguing, and I enjoyed the suspense of finding out if the money existed, where it came from, and where could it be now. I liked Jarod and wanted Erin to find closure. However, there were so many characters in this story, and so many of them seemed to have secrets, that it was hard to get invested in more than that. Too many characters had hints of backgrounds that the author wanted to tease out, and there just wasn't room in the story to fully flesh them all out. He did do a good job of tying everything up at the end, though, and it didn't feel like there were loose ends.
If I hadn't just read a really good suspense book before this one, my review might have been more favorable. As it is, I enjoyed the plotline and the story, but can only give this book 2.5 stars. I did see that this was a debut novel by Mr. Johnson, so I would enjoy watching him develop as an author. If his writing style tightens up a bit, I think that his story-telling is enjoyable enough to produce some great books.

Reviewing THE DEPOSIT SLIP by Todd M. Johnson
Reviewing THE DEPOSIT SLIP by Todd M. Johnson.
Question is... what would YOU do if your father had died, and when going through the 'estate' you find a deposit slip showing he had deposited over TEN million dollars you knew nothing about? The subject is intriguing, and the author does a masterful job of writing an interesting story.
My initial reaction was "FINALLY a Christian novel that can compete and hold it's own with the NY Times legal thriller best-sellers... BUT as I neared the end of the book, I wondered 'where is the Christian witness?' I found none, except toward the end when someone was asked if they ever prayed while working in a garden on their knees!!! I don't think something is "Christian" just because it doesn't contain swearing or immoral sex. There should be a 'witness'. So I am wondering why Bethany Publishers were the ones to publish this book. Frankly, even though I liked this book, I have found a bigger Christian witness in John Grisham's THE TESTIMENT, or David Baldicci's books!
As you read this book, you will walk through legal monsters ganging up on financially strapped honest attorneys and feel your heart tug at the emotional situation between the father and son, but there is no Christian witness as one would expect from a 'Christian publisher'.
I was given this book free from Bethany Publishers for review and am not required to give a possitive opinion. I would recommend the book, because it is very interesting and well written.

This is Todd Johnson’s debut novel and it is fabulous! I loved everything about this book, from the story to the characters to the theme of forgiveness. There is a line near the end of the story that reads: “And by allowing people like Mrs. Huddleston, Verne Loffler-and even his son-a chance to heal the only way he knew how: by giving them the opportunity to forgive him.” This has stuck with me and is something I’m “chewing on” quite a bit. Thanks to the author for writing such a thought provoking and insightful book chock full of golden nuggets like this.
There are many engaging characters in this story that you come to care about who demonstrate selflessness, love and what it means to be a true friend. Some characters made very poor choices and later come to realize how wrong they were and try and make it right-make amends to not only their friends and family but to the outside world as well.
The mystery/drama is well plotted, neither going to slow nor at a lightening pace speed, just right in my opinion. The plot is believable and puts “everyday people” in a situation and asks the question “What would I do”?
This is a book well worth your time. I will be looking to read more from this author.

I received this book, The Deposit Slip by Todd M. Johnson, in the mail this past week, compliments of Bethany House. The premise of the book is that a young woman returns home to empty out a safe-deposit box containing her father's effects. She finds various things inside that her father has kept hold of, meaning they held some sort of significance. At the bottom of the box, she finds a deposit slip with an unbelievable amount on it. In her own search, she ends up with dead-ends, even lawyers she hires refuses to take on her case. Finally she finds a lawyer who is willing to help her out and solve the mystery.
This was a good book. It was a book that once I started I could not put down. I didn't turn on the television, didn't get on the computer, my nose was glued to this book. The development of the charters were great, and the plot was just as good. I've read John Grisham books over the years, his first one, A Time to Kill being the best. I rank this particular book in the same category. Excellent.
There is one thing I did notice, an error perhaps, but ever so slight that it could have been me misreading it on page 241, and it is was just a switching of names "Paul smiled at Erin before turning to the banker". At that particular moment, Erin wasn't there. But that's all I say on the matter. :) Other than that, great book!
Thank you to Bethany House for my complimentary copy to read and review.

This debut novel, by attorney Todd M. Johnson, rivals John Grisham and David Baldacci for white-knuckled, clock-ticking suspense and non-stop action. It is nearly impossible to put this book down.
Set in a small town in Minnesota, the story centers around a deposit slip for $10 million found in a safe deposit box. Erin Larson, the young woman who finds the slip, wonders where her late father got so much money. When she inquires at the bank, she is told that there is no record of the money. A chain of events is set in motion that forces Erin to seek an attorney who is not afraid to go face to face with a high-powered law firm with unlimited resources. Jared Neaton is the man for the job.
Characters are genuine, with a variety of strengths and human failings. It is easy for the reader to make friends and trust these people. Locations, weather, and emotions are all well-described. Readers will feel as if they are in Ashley, Minnesota. Old friendships, old grudges and gossip abound, some helping Jared’s case, others preventing his legal team’s progress.
The reader will feel the suspense build as efforts are blocked and the sand runs down, moving ever closer to the trial date deadline. As efforts are thwarted and motions blocked, Jared’s desperation is almost tangible. Will the team find enough evidence to prove their case? Readers may find themselves gripping the book tightly or holding their breath as the plot races to its finish.
This is a story about greed, trust, forgiveness and the lengths to which some people will go for money. Jared and the cast will have questions and will find answers. Is full disclosure necessary for justice to prevail? Is it possible or even advisable to forgive someone who may be undeserving? Where is the line drawn and when has one stepped over it?
Readers will be clamoring for more books from Todd M. Johnson. This author has a bright future with legal thrillers.
I was given a free copy of the book by Bethany House Publishers to read and review.  I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy good mysteries and suspenseful legal thrillers.

This is a page-turner; I liked it! Fast paced writing with short chapters, makes this a good "beach book." A good plot with many twists and turns--along with surprises--kept this reader's attention. It's the tale of an one lawyer's struggle against a large, legal corporation--a David and Goliath.
The novel is authored by an attorney, who I hope decides to continue to write. If you like John Grisham, you'll like this one.

I absolutely loved this debut novel from Todd M. Johnson and can confidently say it’s my favourite debut novel of the year, so far!
Now, to be fair, I love legal thrillers, so that fact alone gives this book a significant advantage. However, not only is this book a legal thriller....it’s a well-written legal thriller! The writing is taut and the pacing spot-on, and it did not at all feel like I was reading a debut novel. The story captured my interest from the first chapter, and didn't let go as it delved into the fascinating case of the $10,000,000 deposit slip, the origin of the money, and the ongoing efforts taken to quash any attempts to uncover the truth. Jared is a nicely developed character, realistically portrayed and unique enough to hold my interest. I was greatly appreciative of the fact that the author did not even try and touch the typical lawyer-turned-drinking-bum stereotype that so many legal thrillers seem to feature, but instead created a character in Jared that, while human and flawed, I still felt I could root for. I also enjoyed the story arc involving Jared's assistant, Jessie, and the subtle romance developing between them, as well as Jared's struggle to forgive his father for what happened in the past. All of the story lines tie up nicely in the satisfying conclusion, while leaving me wanting to know more about Jared and Jessie and what's in store for them.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a good legal thriller...and anyone who just loves a good book. Well done Todd! I can't wait to see what the future holds for Jared! 5 out of 5 stars.

Just when things can't possibly get any worse for her, Erin Larson discovers a deposit slip in her father's safe deposit box dated for February 10, 2008, three years earlier before her dad died. It's drawn on Ashley State Bank for the amount of $10.3 million dollars and Erin has no idea where the money is or how her father obtained it.
As she begins to inquire to the whereabouts of the funds through the bank, she is only told that no such deposit was ever made, and there is no account with that number at the bank. Yet what Erin can't figure out is why her father would have kept this deposit slip if it was worthless. As she tries to hire lawyers to represent her and begin to dig into the location of the money, she finds herself on the end of threats, harassing phone calls and even vandalizing of her car. Now she learns that the Paisley Law Firm is handling the case from bank's interest and she doesn't have the funds or even an attorney that seems interested in dealing with a high power law firm.
Until Jared Neaton is called by a former high power attorney by the name of Clay Strong. He advises Jared of the potential this case could do for his own struggling firm and has offered to front him $30,000 of expense money if he'll consider taking the case. Strapped and barely making ends me because of a failed trial that almost left him bankrupt, Jared is trying to keep his head above water since leaving the Paisley law firm where he met and was mentored by Clay.
Without any other proof other than a deposit slip, Jared wonders if this will be a repeat of the previous case he lost or will he be able to find the evidence he needs to go up against some of the best attorneys and possibly win. Things aren't looking too good, but what God uses best in circumstances like this, is when the odds are against us and it looks like we are at a dead end. That's when things begin to look up!
I received the debut novel, The Deposit Slip by Todd M. Johnson compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and literally read this one in a few hours. It's compelling, page turning, edge of your seat, all the way through the book and one you simply will not be able to put down. If you love novels where the high power attorneys are looking to take out the little guy, this is the perfect novel for you. I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars for it's exceptional writing and it's ability to keep the reader engaged at a constant pace from beginning to end.

From this debut novel for Todd M. Johnson it’s evident that he’s a great story teller. He has created a page turner with intriguing characters, coupled with a captivating and realistic plot! This book is riveting from the first pages on with Erin sitting in a cool vault, sifting through the contents of her father’s safe-deposit box and finds a mysterious bank deposit slip. Johnson’s thirty plus years’ experience as an attorney who specialized as a trial lawyer, is obvious - he brought the tension of a trial right into these pages.
I was drawn into this case very quickly and couldn’t wait to find out how it would all play out. I was just as curious to find out what will happen between Jared and his dad, as their relationship is strained because of the father’s shady past, which Jared hasn’t come to grips with. The story is set in Jared’s hometown and limited finances force him to live with his dad during the investigation and trial. It seems for young Jared taking on this giant of a case is just as much making peace with his past as it was bringing shady characters to justice. So it’s heartwarming to see when he finally finds it in himself to forgive his father. I would have liked to learn more about Jared’s father, though – when I finished the book it somehow felt that I didn’t get to know him as well as the other characters. Since this is a Christian book, I was also hoping to see more than the vague mentions of how God fits into this story.
As much as I enjoyed this book, I was disappointed with the violent scene towards the end and it didn’t really add anything to the story. There was enough drama, tension and suspense already and that part only served as overkill.
