Bethany House Jennifer: An O'Malley Love Story, O'Malley Series #1

It's a summer of change for Jennifer O'Malley.

The busy physician has a pediatrics practice in Dallas, Texas, and meeting and falling in love with surgeon Tom Peterson is adding a rich layer to her life. She's sorting out how to introduce Tom to her family--she's the youngest of seven--and thinking about marriage.

She's falling in love with Jesus too, and knows God is good. But that faith is about to be tested, and in a way she didn't expect. The results will soon transform her entire family.

Enjoyable O'Malley Story

Date:May 17, 2013
I fell in love with Dee Henderson's O'Malley series many years ago and was excited to see that Jennifer's story was finally going to be published! A prequel to the rest of the series, Jennifer: An O'Malley Love Story is a delightful book! I received it in the mail, tossed the envelope on the floor, and promptly read the entire book—start to finish—in a few hours. The story is certainly moving, and I enjoyed watching Jennifer and Tom's friendship develop. The only drawback is that this is only the beginning of the series! The book leaves you hanging a bit as far as a conclusion. However, I'm now looking forward to going back and re-reading the rest of the series! If you've read the rest of the series, you'll love this novella. If you haven't read them (shame on you!), this is the perfect place to start! [4 stars]
I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House & Christian Fiction Blog Alliance in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Jennifer O’Malley is a doctor specialising in pediatric oncology. She meets Tom Petersen, a handsome young surgeon in the same Houston hospital, and they become friends. As they get to know each other and explore the possibility of a closer relationship, Jennifer also has to come to terms with Tom’s Christian faith.
Jennifer is a very quick read – only 160 pages, approximately half the length of a regular novel (although I notice it’s currently priced as a full-length novel). Fans of the O’Malley series will want to read this, even though it’s entirely predictable. Those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of the O’Malley stories should start with Jennifer.
For anyone who has read any of the O'Malley series, this story was always going to be bittersweet, because the later O’Malley books made told us how the three main plot points were going to develop over time. Even so, it is good to finally get Jennifer's story, because of her disproportionate impact on the whole O'Malley saga.

It is so fun to re-visit an old haunt of yours, a blast from the past so to speak. It’s fun because it was a favorite from the past and it still has a sweet spot in your heart- it’s familiar and it is just plain nice and comfortable. These are the feelings that Jennifer, an O’Malley Love story elicited in me while reading this bittersweet novella. Why, you ask? Because it is a return to the O’Malleys of course. For those of you that have read the wonderfully popular O’Malley series from Dee Henderson, you are in for a treat. A wonderful prequel where we dive into the Love story of Jennifer O’Malley and return ever so briefly remember what makes this series special. The bonds of a self-made family- a group of people with no family who bonded together to create one. If you have not read the O’Malleys, here is a wonderful place to start.
We meet Jennifer O’Malley, a very special Dr. who works with young children in wellness care for kids who were chronically or terminally ill. She helps them to feel better. She bumps into Tom Peterson, a surgeon one night in the ER and they form a friendship of sorts. Jennifer is not looking for a relationship, but as these things always go, a relationship starts to develop. They have a problem though, He is a man with a heartfelt faith , while Jennifer does not and doesn’t see the need for God in her life. However with patience and care Tom woos her to himself and doesn’t push her but just invites her to check out a relationship with Jesus out for herself.
This novel does a good job of introducing us to Jennifer and her struggles with understanding who God is. The things I loved about the O’Malley series are that it truly tackles different objections and obstacles that people have with regards to a relationship with God based on what they have experienced in their respective lives. This novel is no different and I enjoyed seeing Jennifer progress, and learn and gain understanding, even when faced with insurmountable odds. As I mentioned earlier, this is a prequel type of story. So once you are done reading this one, you’ll want to read or re-read the O’Malleys series all over again!
4 Stars.

When I discovered the O'Malley series, I realized Christian fiction might have grown into the type of books that I love. This electic group of "siblings" had me from the first page, and I loved the way the series was interconnected...one of the key connections was Jennifer's story. Yet Jennifer never had her own book until now. While this is a novella (so shorter than a regular novel) it provides satisfaction for fans who have longed to get to know Jennifer and Tom's story. At the same time, if you haven't discovered the O'Malleys, it will provide a great segue to this romantic suspense series. This book has no traditional suspense. Instead, it is a straight romance. It is a story that compelled me to read it in one setting, and one I will return to ... just as I have the rest of the O'Malley series. Two thumbs up!

Since I haven't had the pleasure of reading the O'Malley series of novels by author Dee Henderson, I got a rare opportunity to catch this latest prequel to her series, Jennifer: An O'Malley Love Story. Since Dee began her series of O'Malley novels back in 2005, she referred to Jennifer O'Malley but the reader never got to understand her side of coming into the O'Malley family. In fact, the O'Malley's are a rare treasure. Consisting of seven adopted brothers and sisters by one exceptional set of parents, each of the children made a personal decision to change their names because they wanted to be a real family even though they weren't united by blood. Each of the novels in the O'Malley series contained a separate story detailing each of the siblings but Jennifer was simply a backstory mentioned in them all.
In Jennifer: An O'Malley Love Story, we get a chance to see Jennifer's beginning and come to know just how she fell in love with Dr. Tom Peterson. At 160 pages, this is such a heartwarming and beautiful story that details not only the relationship and early proposal between Jennifer and Tom, but also Jennifer's acceptance in coming to terms with her personal relationship with Jesus Christ through Tom's patience. Jennifer wasn't a believer before she met Tom and through such love and patience, he guides Jennifer to discover in her own way and in her own time, that Jesus Christ is really who He claims He is and that the Bible is in fact true. I love Tom's explanation to Jennifer when she asks how he (Tom) knows the Bible is true.
"I wish I had a brilliant answer for you. I guess, as with most things, you start with common sense." Tom walked a bit, then bent to pick up a small branch on the path. He snapped the wood in two pieces and held them up.
"The Bible tells about how people would take a piece of wood, use part of it to start a fire, and use the other part to carve out an image of a god, then worship that image and pray to it for rain and good fortune. As if the works of their own hands could come alive and answer them. It's illogical and foolish. So common sense will knock down most religions." He tossed aside the sticks.
"Other religions sound good on the surface, but turn out to be impersonal systems based on grading what you do to determine your worth. Christianity is the only religion that promises not a system but a personal God you have a relationship with. At its core, Christianity is a relationship with a God who is listening, responding, and interacting with those who love Him. That's how you prove it, Jen. You test Christianity's claims by testing out the relationship on which it's built."
"Can you have a relationship with God if you don't believe in Him?" she asked. "That doesn't seem possible. Isn't Christianity something you have to take on faith first? Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus died for people's sins. Jesus rose from the dead. Those are hard facts to absorb and believe."
Tom weighed her question, then nodded. "Consider it this way. If you step off a tall building, it's immaterial whether you think gravity is true or not; it's still going to splat you on the ground a few seconds later. Right?"
"Thanks for that image."
He smiled. "It got the point across. In some ways it doesn't matter what you believe. Christianity is more like that gravity analogy than not. God is God right now, and He will still be God tomorrow, regardless of whether you choose to believe in Him today or not. That's a good thing. It means you can ask questions and search out answers and see for yourself what is true. God will still go on being God while you ponder the questions. He doesn't mind." (pg 80-81).
What an exceptional way to explain how to find God! I love it and have captured this little piece of divine wisdom to share with others that are still searching for God in the midst of this world. Thank you Dee for sharing this. I received Jennifer: An O'Malley Love Story by Dee Henderson compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and Bethany House Publishers for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. With that being said, I can't wait to begin my journey into each of the O'Malley's and am sure to find such wonderful treasures along the way. This is the perfect beginning to wet your appetite and to further explore the relationship between Tom and Jennifer in the series. I give this one a 5 out of 5 stars and will be adding this one to my personal library.

Having read Danger in the Shadows and the six O'Malley books at least six times to now read Jennifer's story (which runs through all six O'Malley books) was, shall we say, the icing on the cake. It was terribly moving reading about someone finding out they had a terminal cancer (I myself am in remission from cancer) and how she dealt with this and finding a way to let her brothers and sister know. Reading also about finding the love of her life in Tom and best of all finding Jesus. Dee Henderson is a wonderful writer and writing Jennifer's story, although quite short, was a real pleasure to read. To say I cried whilst reading was an understatement but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I would recommend this book to all.

If you loved Dee Henderson’s O’Malley series then this is definitely a book you must get! Finally Jennifer’s story gets to be told. This is a novella that is about 160 pages long. Jennifer: An O’Malley Love Story begins by showing us what a dedicated doctor Jennifer is. The novella also shows us her love for the young cancer victims that she treats and her tireless fight to keep them alive. We get to see how she meets her future husband Tom and how their attraction grows for each other through working together and how he introduces her to the Savior. Not only do we see her love and care for her patients but also once she knows the Lord there is an instant desire to tell her family about Him because of her love for the O’Malley’s. If you have read the O’Malley series then you know the rest of Jennifer’s story. Jennifer: An O’Malley Love Story tells the beginning of Jennifer’s battle with cancer, the heartbreak and betrayal that she felt when she heard the news and how Tom was with her from the very beginning.
My Thoughts:
I really liked Jennifer: An O’Malley Love Story but am disappointed that it was only a novella. I realize that the majority of Jennifer’s story is told throughout the rest of the O’Malley series, but I definitely would have liked to see more of Jennifer’s work with children and more of her relationship unfolding with Tom. That being said, I wouldn’t have missed this no matter what the length!

I loved the O'Malley series. Though Jennifer is well written, as are Ms. Dee's other books - I think this one didn't need to be written. A few more details on how the two met, fleshing out the scenes in a way not possible in the book. It's fine, but I like to fill in some bits and pieces in my imagination. So, this really is different from the series and a couple of her other books. It's hard to figure on the stars because of my opinion. So I'll go for one half, abt. 2.5, with prejudice.
I AM looking forward to the new books in 'production'.

I was happy to finally read the beginning of Jennifer's love story. I highly recommend this book and all the others in the O'Malley series. I enjoyed this little book as much as I did the rest of the O'Malley series. I hope Dee Henderson writes more O'Malley books. She is such an excellent writer. This book lets you know Jennifer better. I always love the way Dee Henderson weaves in her stories a character's realistic journey to faith in Jesus Christ, with all the questions and doubts that real people have along the way...and the power of the gospel to answer and fulfill all of our hearts' needs.

4 1/2 Jennifer O'Malley is a busy physician who pours her heart and soul into her pediatric patient's. They are more like her kids. While trying to help a hurting child, she runs into Dr. Tom Peterson who gives her some assistance. Her strength and dedication attracts Tom while Jennifer finds herself drawn to Tom's gentle personality and strong faith. Tom introduces Jennifer to the Lord and she is excited about her future and new found faith. She wants to introduce Tom to her family at their Fourth of July gathering. But what will happen when Jennifer's faith is push to the ultimate limit?
I have read the entire O'Malley Series so I was very excited to about reading 'Jennifer'. It's not a long story but it was very endearing and loaded with emotion. I found myself reaching for the Kleenex at one point. Jennifer's life is a secondary story within the O'Malley Series and you get to know her while reading through the stories. That's what made this story so touching, because you get to see how Jennifer and Tom met and got to know each other. If you haven't read the O'Malley Series, you could start with this story but understand, to find the conclusion to Jennifer's story, you have to read the entire series. (which you'll want to do because it's a GREAT series). If you've read the O'Malley Series, you will definitely want get this book. I think it's a great addition you won't want to miss.

I read the O'Malley series a few years ago and loved each one. I always enjoy Dee Henderson's writing and the O'Malley series is an incredible series everyone should read.
When I had the opportunity to review Jennifer, the very beginning of the story, I was thrilled.
It is a beautiful story of love, life, forgiveness and provision. I loved how God took center stage of this book and how the characters learn to love and trust Him in all things.
This is a very short story and definitely leads you right into the O'Malley series!
I will have to reread them now!
