Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. The Epsitle to the Galatians: New International Commentary on the New Testament [NICNT]

The Epistle to the Galatians [NICNT] diverges slightly from the general aims of other commentaries in this series in that it is more pastoral in outlook, and less concerned with contemporary scholarship though this aspect is still present. As such, pastors and students will find much of use here, and while Fung engages in critical issues it is not his central focus. A well-rounded and eminently practical commentary on this important epistle.

This is a very helpful work, but it requires careful thought because Dr. Fung is a little difficult to follow at times. I recommend using it along with the NIGTC volume by Bruce. If you cannot work with the Greek, use Fung along with Timothy George's NAC commentary on Galatians. Fung was a student of F.F. Bruce and this work is clearly influenced by him as well as by Betz. Fung spends a good bit of time in the introduction on the South Galatian theory, but I did not find any of it superfluous and I agree with his conclusions. However, as another reviewer pointed out, it is difficult to follow Fung's line of thought on this issue. The exegesis is solid and lucid. However, I was a little disappointed with the very little interaction with the "new perspective on Paul." Fung simply asserts traditional views without really dealing with the work of Sanders and Dunn. But one wonders after all if a commentary is really the place for such scholarly polemics.I appreciate and highly recommend this commentary. For other excellent commentaries on Galatians, see F.F. Bruce (NIGTC), Richard Longenecker (WBC), Ben Witherington (SRC) and Timothy George (NAC). Use Dunn (BNTC) and McKnight (NIVAC) for the "new perspective."
