Building upon and correcting the work of Joachim Jeremias, Thompson surveys the use of "Father" as an image for God in Old Testament and Second Temple Judaism, Jesus, the Synoptics, Paul and John. Thompson argues that, rather than rooting the image of God in a debate about gender, the image of "Father" really identifies an "ancestor" who grants an "inheritance."
