Hold on to your sissy bar, folks, Allison Chamberlain is back! In this sequel to The Reluctant Prophet, Nancy Rue delivers another look at her beleaguered motorcycle-riding prophetess. She is continuing the work God prompted her to start, including raising a smart mouthed pre-teen, rehabilitating through love a group of former prostitutes, and attempting to expand the ministry at Sacrament House. The obstacles she encounters make her wonder if she is really in tune with God’s expectations.
As God’s prompting moves her to do more unexpected things, Allison is still not quite getting what God wants from her. Still, through fundraising tries, murder attempts, new women who need help, and other unforeseen adventures, Allison starts to suspect that what God wants from her is not some new activity, but a new perspective.
What I really enjoy about these Allison tales is the reckless abandon with which Allison surrenders her heart to Jesus. The established church criticizes her, the community criticizes her, and in some instances eve her friends criticize her, but through it all, Allison is seizing on the one Person who can sustain her through all the challenges – Jesus. She doesn’t always get it right, but she always trusts Him to guide her through.
In the end, prophet or not, that is the calling on every Christian’s heart – follow God’s voice into the unknown and through the unexpected and know that His plan will always win the day. I crave that commitment in my own life, that complete and utter devotion to the Christ who saved me. I know it’s possible, and I know it’s risky, but oh, to know the joy that comes from living in Christ, fully and utterly. That is why I read Allison’s story, to remind myself that not only is it possible, it should be unavoidable.
I can’t wait to read the third book in this series! Hurry up, Nancy!

Nancy Rue writes very emotional fiction that makes for a powerful read that is not sappy at all. This book helped me think about what it really means to hear God speak and what to do with what He says. The story also helped me think about how to apply the directives in the Bible, especially in the book of James about the poor and rejected, in my own life. It was definitely worth reading!

Nancy Rue continues the story of modern prophet Allison Chamberlain in this second book of "The Reluctant Prophet" series. Allison is continuing to learn to hear God's voice and to obey his nudges, something that isn't always as clear as she would like. When she hears God telling her to "wash their feet" she at first resists and thinks she must be hearing wrong. However, God has some surprising moments in store for Allison as she continues to learn to trust God and his leading, whether with her care of former prostitutes, her relationship with fellow Harley rider, Chief, or her plans to adopt Desmond, the boy left in her care by his now-deceased mother.
I enjoyed Unexpected Dismounts as much as I did the first book in the series. There were moments that made me smile and laugh, moments that left me feeling challenged in my faith, moments that made me think a tear was about to emerge! The characters continued to grow in their personal journeys, and I loved being able to follow their journies, especially Allison's unique one. Some added suspense in this book, some legal drama, and a few twists I didn't see coming left me devouring the pages. The series just keeps getting better and better, and I cannot wait for the third and final book in the series.
I highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars. Those readers who enjoyed the first book in this series will want to add this one to their Christmas wishlist.

I've not read many, if any, books that so clearly demonstrate what following Christ truly means as this series does. Unexpected Dismounts continues the story of Allison as she follows the Nudge God gave her, leading her to buy a Harley and open a home to help prostitutes begin a new life. Now she is facing some rather daunting challenges (some "unexpected dismounts," as they call them in the world of Harleys) and other than one new Nudge (which God must surely intend only to be followed in a theoretical, as opposed to literal, sense!) she finds Him to be rather silent. There's nothing quite like going out on a limb with and for God and then feeling like you're stranded there. . . .especially when almost everyone around you pretty much thinks you're crazy for being there in the first place! Including those who profess to be Christians, who just want Allison to get over this phase and get back in her pew and behave like a "normal" Christian. Allison must decide which is worse: for people to judge her for hearing and following God's voice, or for her to decide the cost is too great and close her ears and her heart to His nudges. Nancy Rue has definitely heard some nudges of her own in writing this series. This is not your typical "safe" Christian fiction. But come to think of it, the Christian life was never guaranteed to be "safe." From a strictly literary sense, this is a phenomenal book. Several times as I read, I stopped and thought, "where does she come up with this stuff?!" The characters and the interactions between them are so well-done that I truly felt as if I might encounter them in real life. But the spiritual dimension utterly transforms it from simply a "good read" to one that will challenge you to follow the Nudge that God is giving you. Don't miss this book and this series.

Nancy Rue's character development, tight, "right-on" dialogue and fluid follow-up to "Reluctant Prophet", made this a "can't put it down" event. The story flows off the pages with lots of surprising twists and turns, yet without any hint of the plot being forced or unrealistic. The principles of James Chapter 2 are clearly demonstrated in the behavior of the main character and show that there is more than one way to "walk the walk". Looking with anticipation for #3 in this series.

There are books that entertain, and there are books that enlighten. "Unexpected Dismounts" does both with a mix of grace, humor and humanity. It's Christian fiction at its best, a story that challenges readers while showing them the depth of God's love. I worried about every person in the story--Alison, Chief, Desmond, the women, everyone. This is one of my favorite books of the year. Can't wait for the third one in the series!
For Book Club members . . . The Reluctant Prophet series is great for discussion.
