Chosen Books No, We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism and the Myth of Coexistence - eBook

Fueled with clever slogans and celebrity endorsements, the religious "Coexist" campaign is gaining momentum. On the surface, this movement is appealing, with its promise of promoting harmony and ending religious intolerance. But beneath the bumper stickers and T-shirts, the truth is buried: coexistence is a myth. Instead, a war for world domination is raging--between radical Islam, fundamentalist secularism, and Judeo-Christianity.

What does it mean for believers and why should they care? From years of global outreach, No We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the Myth of Coexistance examines the coming perilous culture clash. With clarity and astonishing depth, he shows readers

  • The power of radical Islam to reshape Western culture
  • Why Judeo-Christianity is losing strength
  • The rise of apostasy within the church
  • What believers can and must do...and more

The ultimate dominance of any of these worldviews will create a tipping point in global culture. Which will it be?

Well this book isn't quite my normal review fare but when it came up offered on Bethany House's review program I knew it was I book I wanted to read! For quite a while now I have been interested in learning more about Islam from a historic perspective and Islam from a Christian perspective and this book really filled the bill!
Mr. Stearns begins his book by laying out the cultural landscape of today's world and explaining multiculturalism, coexistence and what the Bible says about understanding the times we live in; additionally exploring current events and Biblical end times prophecy and how each of these things operate as cogs in the ever turning wheel of our world. His approach is methodical and clear in laying out the historical background, current cultural relevance and future likely significance for what he calls the 'three houses'. These three houses 'Radical Islam', 'Militant Secularism', and 'Judeo-Christianity' are each given their own chapters to delve deeper in to the worldviews of each and how they have reached out and affected the world we live in today. The book wraps up with three final chapters where Stearns steps back from looking at each of these houses and takes a look at the ultimate house- God's House. In these wrap up chapters Stearns really explores how Christians today are to be living and that is ultimately with eternity and Christ's kingdom in view!
I really enjoyed Stearns style and the way he put this book together, it reads smoothly and brings the reader along for an enlightening ride that is sure to wake up those still asleep in the tumultuous river of current events and buoy up those who are already awake and riding those rapids. At times I do find Stearns repeating themes and thoughts but I didn't find it detrimental to the book just reinforcing and building of his theme. I truly appreciated the wrap up of this book and the clear and inspiring call that is given to the Church today to rouse themselves and remember who they are and what God expects of them and what they can do about that. It personally saddens me that at large the Church does seem to be uninspired and uncaring to what is happening in the world around them. After reading this book I don't know how any Christian can remain uncaring of what is happening and uninspired to do something! It was a great read with lots of great information for the informed reader (my book is highlighted within an inch of it's life!) and a great read with lots of food for thought for the uninformed friend or relative that you should definitely be passing this book along to!
This book deserves every one of the 5 stars I'm giving it!
I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and opinion of the product.

"No, We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the Myth of Coexistence," by Robert Stearns, is destined by both the political and religious tone of its title to appeal to a certain kind of reader while it simultaneously repels another. It's highly unlikely that many Muslims or self-declared Secularists are going to read this book, and that's fine, as it is intended for a Christian audience. Within that Christian audience I predict that there will be a wide range of opinion on the merits of Stearn's work, and I'm basing that on my own wide-ranging opinion of it. That's going to make this something of a mixed review. For some readers I'd highly recommend it, but for others- I wouldn't. Stay with me, I'll tell you why.
"No We Can't" began with a basic layman's overview of the three dominant worldviews; Islam, Judeo-Christianity, and Secularism, and Stearns made a compelling case for the importance of understanding how these three worldviews will increasingly form the basis of socio-political interaction-and conflict-in America and throughout the world. But just as I thought the book was off to a good start, I hit Chapter 2. It took me two attempts to make sense of this chapter and how it fit into the overall context of the book. I suppose because I'm not much of an alarmist, I was a little slow on the uptake; the first time through I felt like I was reading an adult version of Chicken Little and his mantra, "the sky is falling". I got it the second time- that's how determined I was to give this book a chance- and I admit, Stearns makes a good point, though he could have made it much more clearly; if we fail to understand the Muslim or Secular worldviews and the beliefs that form them, we will also fail to correctly interpret and understand the socio-political behavior of Islamic or Secular states. Rest assured, I have no intention of giving a chapter-by-chapter review of this book. From Chapter 2 on it was generally touch-and-go; some good points made, but often wrapped in weak, superficial presentation. From time-to-time some good illustrating examples, but overall there seemed to be a dearth of these, and I was left with the sense that it wasn't for lack of them, but rather lack of time spent researching them. So, my thoughts are this; if you're interested in expanding your understanding of international relations, particularly from the angle of how worldview shapes world affairs, and especially if you're interested in strengthening your own Judeo-Christian worldview, than this book will be a helpful and valuable tool. However, "No We Can't" is probably not going to satisfy those with more advanced interest, particularly scholarly interest, in the subject, though you'll pick up a few good insights here and there.

No, We Can't - Radical Islam, Militant Secularism and the Myth of Coexistence
by Robert Stearns
Synopsis & My Thoughts
Christians - believers in the Bible, which is the infallible word of God, commanded by Christ to make disciples of all the nations.
Muslims - the followers of Muhammad, commanded by him to dominate the world by force, slaughtering all infidels. They are well on their way to dominating the western world - just by high birth rates and immigration.
Humanism. The worship and idolatry of self. If it feels good, do it. If it seems to fit in with common sense, it is right. Truth depends on a variety of factors, and no one is supposed to oppose anyone else. These are the type of people most likely to be sporting a "coexist", "peace", "respect", or other similar bumper sticker.
{ "C" = Islam. "O"Pacifism. "E"=Homosexuality. "X"=Judaism. "I"=Paganism/Witchcraft. "S"=Taoism. "T"=Christianity. }
While the idea of coexistence sounds nice, this book explains many of the reasons why it will not & can not, work.
Although I can by no means say that I agree with every single argument presented in this book, I do agree with the main premise and arguments. We are in a spiritual battle, one which can not be resolved by agreeing to disagree. To illustrate this, let me give a little fictional conversation a minute.
American tourist: "Hello, my name is Bob."
Cannibal: "Good day, I think you ought to be my supper."
Bob: "I really don't think that you are correct. I won't taste very good."
Cannibal: "I disagree. You will taste very good."
Bob: "Well, lets just agree to disagree. I won't push my belief on you, and you don't push yours on me. Now lets go eat something else for supper."
Cannibal: "You're trying to push your beliefs on me by not letting me eat you. Now get into the pot if you want to be consistent."
Obviously, trying to coexist in this situation will not work. Bob either needs to vacate the premises or disable the cannibal. When two radically different beliefs clash, one of them must give way. Either Bob must agree with the cannibal and get into the pot, or the cannibal must agree not to eat Bob. Both notions cannot live peacefully together, and neither can we "coexist".
I give No, We Can't 8 out of 10 stars.

No, We Can't, by Robert Stearns
The world is shifting. It is dissatisfied, baffled and craving transformation.
Once I read that intro, I was curious. The world we live in today is bombarded with news of coexistence, wars, peace, and opinions. What should we believe? Does anyone know the truth? How can we trust any source to be accurate? These are all questions that begin to have answers in this latest book I've read, by author, Robert Stearns.
The book, "No, We Can't, Radical Islam, Militant Secularism and the Myth of Coexistence", provides the reader with a comparative religious overview of a coming perilous culture clash.
My first impression as I began to read this book, was apprehension. As I read further, I realized I need to be more informed about the three dominant world cultures and their value systems. The presentation of each culture is quite detailed and factual. Understanding how different belief systems and each culture's response to basic human needs was the major portion of this book.
After reading "No, We Can't, a believer of Judeo-Christian beliefs and values will be able to respond to a world we thought would always stay the same. That world is changing rapidly whether we like it or not. Should you read this book? Yes. Should a believer of Islam or secularism read this book? I think so. Will we all be able to coexist? After reading this book, probably not. The age-old struggle for power and being in control hasn't changed.
One final thought. I believe this book would be read by more people if it was titled, perhaps, "The Climax of Human Civilization", or "Coexistence Is A Myth".
"I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers for this review."

Every night millions of people watch cable television and or regular television programs and are fed the idea that tolerance is a virtue. These television shows want people to believe that tolerance is to be prized more than truth. Beneath this proclamation is the idea that if everyone is tolerant then we will live in a utopia, a world where everyone gets along. The problem with this is that such a notion is false--mankind is sinful and not improving. There will never be a utopia on earth until Jesus Christ returns to judge sinners and establishes His millennial Kingdom in Jerusalem. In No We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the myth of Coexistence by Robert Stearns demonstrates how there is a war for world domination raging between radical Islam, militant secularism and Judeo-Christianity.
Books on current events are written quite often but I very rarely ever read many of them, because most of them are repeating the same message as other books. No We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the myth of Coexistence doesn't fall into this category as Mr. Stearns as the founder of Eagles' Wings, a global movements of churches, ministries and leaders along with being the co-founder of the worldwide Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem understands the issues because he has faced many of them head on during the course of his ministry. This makes No We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the myth of Coexistence an important contribution and worthy of reading.
The heart of the book seeks to explain the differences between the three houses- Radical Islam, Militant Secularism and Christianity and whether or not they get along with each other. The answer the author gives is that only in Christianity can one find forgiveness and peace with God through the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Along the way the author exposes how Islam seeks to reshape Western culture, why Jude-Christianity is losing strength, what Christians can and must do, and much more.
The author calls Christians to the Gospel in order deal with the issues in our day. He notes that "By refuting the myth of coexistence and embracing the reality of shalom, Christians can become agents of change in the war zone of the earth" (Stearns, 213). The Christian has nothing to offer to fellow sinners, but the Gospel. Helping others and performing good works are not the Gospel, but rather are the overflow of one who understands the Gospel. Social justice will never cure the world's ills when it's divorced from the Gospel, which calls sinners to repent and believe in the Savior who died, and rose again. The author correctly notes that "the perfect blood, shed for the forgiveness of sins gives Christians the power to do everything they do" (Stearns, 163) He continues explaining, "The blood of Jesus inspires humanitarian aid extended by Christians to all people's regardless of contrary belief systems. This blood is why Christians pray and believe in miracles. It is what they celebrate, sing about and preach to everyone they meet--a message of life, not death. It causes them to live their lives as a "living sacrifice" unto God that blesses those around them" (Stearns, 163).
I recommend you read No We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the myth of Coexistence to learn how real the battle is for the souls of men. Understanding how Radical Islam seeks to reshape Western culture and how militant secularism is seeking to destroy the Judeo-Christian worldview upon which America was founded is vital. The war for world domination is already raging between radical Islam, militant secularism and Christianity and the stakes couldn't be higher as the souls of billions of men and women stand in the balance. Reading this book will help you to understand how much of a lie the message of tolerance is and how big the cultural war going on in our day is. The battle is real, but so is the Savior-- the Lord Jesus Christ.
At the end of the day every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. The houses of Islam and militant secularism will one day be defeated when the Lord Jesus Christ comes back for His Bride the Church. On that Day the Lord Jesus will speak His Word, which will cut down His enemies resulting in one of the greatest blood baths in the history of war. After this battle the Lord Jesus will reign over His people from His throne in Jerusalem. Until that Day, Christians are to faithfully proclaim the Gospel. While the message of tolerance is popular in culture today, the Gospel is infinitely superior in every way to the false gospel of tolerance, because while tolerance promises much it never delivers; while the Gospel promises much and always delivers saving those who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Read No We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the myth of Coexistence and learn how real the war is and how great the Savior of sinners--the Lord Jesus Christ is.

Nobody wants to be negative but Stearns knew he had to be honest. Understanding the situation today requires taking the time to view the world and what is happening in it.
Stearns examines the three value systems prominent in the world today: radicalized Islam; an aggressive humanism; and the Judeo-Christian faith. He evaluates the three worldviews and how they deal with culture and the basic questions of mankind (existence, purpose, etc.).
Stearns' “hypothesis is that these three prevailing worldviews are all, in different yet equally serious ways, seeking the hearts, souls, minds and bodies of mankind. The end game is to emerge as the dominant player, allowing them to influence and even redefine the future of human existence.” (62) He argues that coexistence is a myth, giving several reasons why. “...[I]t becomes more obvious that multiculturalism is no longer an option for those who wish to continue to live in freedom.” (183)
He has written this book “...so that we can plainly see that the Judeo-Christian worldview is the best possible means of providing a platform of liberty for the human race,” (165) But the Judeo-Christian worldview is being attacked. Christians are in a battle, he writes. “It is a spiritual battle we are called to win.” (29) Stearns foresees the Islamization of the U. S. (as it is happening in Europe) unless Americans are willing to pay the price. “Stay awake and remain active to ensure that the torch of liberty is not extinguished...” (182)
Christians are faced with a decision, he writes. The choice the American church makes will determine whether America as we know it survives or not.
For someone isolated from current events, Stearns' book is a good review of the major belief systems of our day. For those thoughtfully paying attention to the world today, this book will be a fine review but does not really offer any new information.
Stearns definitely writes from a Christian viewpoint, seeing the Christian faith and culture as the only viable one for mankind. I wholeheartedly agree.
Unfortunately, in his enthusiasm for Christianity, I think Stearns makes some statements which can be criticized by those from other faiths. For example, “...God values men and women equally, people of all races equally and the young and old equally.” (137)
He opens himself to criticism when Old Testament laws are considered. Leviticus 12:1-5 says when a male is born, the mother is unclean a week, and when a daughter is born, the mother is unclean for two weeks. The purifying time is doubled too.
Another telling passage is Leviticus 27:1-8. The passage is about “a special vow to the Lord involving the valuation of persons...: The valuation is as follows:
male, aged 20 to 60, 50 shekels of silver
female, 30 shekels
male, aged 5 to 20, 20 shekels
female, 10 shekels
male, aged 1 month to 5 years, 5 shekels
female, 3 shekels
male, over 60 years old, 15 shekels
female, 10 shekels
And then there is Numbers 27 where the daughters of Zelophehad had to plead their case to inherit some of their father's possessions as only sons inherited under the law and Zelophehad had no sons.
He also opens himself to criticism with this statement: “When the Law was given, it was only the lawbreakers who were appointed for destruction.” (137)
But we must remember Exodus 20:5 which says that God is a jealous God, “visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me...”
When a Christian writes a book about other belief systems, it is crucial that the author be accurate regarding the facts of his own faith. While much of Stearns' book is worth reading, it is a shame he makes a couple of statements that might cause his work to be discredited.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.

Attempts at superimposing “Tolerance” on an entire population become abstruse in that this creates an “Intolerance” of anyone who disagrees with popular opinion. Robert Stearns presents the flip side of the current messages of coexistence in his book “No, We Can’t, Radical Islam, Militant Secularism and the Myth of Coexistence.”
The book is endorsed by conservative Christian leaders as critical, vital, and timely. Stearns message challenges the reader to: Recognize a changing world-view, discover how individuals can be a part in making a positive change, and to be intentional in joining those who are in a search to find true answers for implementing in light of Biblical precepts and principles. He carefully presents the nature of three ideologies:
• Radical Islam
• Militant Secularism
• Judeo-Christianity
Prophetic in nature, Stearns writing is provocative, controversial, well documented, and disturbing.
A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opions expressed are my own.
