This book provides an easy way for couples to become prayer partners with eachother, and it's not as scary as one might think. Even though some husbands don't enjoy reading, the wife can read the book and share the messages with her husband. The husband can take the information and run with it by leading the wife in prayer on a daily basis (or several times daily), and this book even helps him get into the habit of doing that with only 5 minutes a day!

Couples who pray is meant to encourage couples to pray together, and not just individually. Throughout the work the authors provide multiple examples of couples who have prayed together. Toward, the end of the work there is a 40-Day Prayer Challenge to couples to encourage them to pray for at least five minutes a day together for 40 days, which is the theme to encourage them to pray together.

When I got this book to review, my husband and I were very excited. We both wanted to start praying more, and specifically start praying together more. Unfortunately, this book doesn’t tell you.
The book starts with the authors giving a summary of what you will learn in the rest of the book. We were concerned that it sounded like an infomercial. They talked about all of the “famous” couples that participated in the 40 Day Prayer Challenge and how it benefitted their marriages. Then, the rest of the chapter was spent explaining how if you pray together for 40 days, at least 5 minutes a day, then your marriage will be happier, your marital intimacy will improve, communication will improve, and your life in general will improve.
On the surface, those are all good things. But, those things should not be the goal of praying. Prayer is about communing with God. It is about seeking His face, learning His will, praising His name, and humbly asking for His guidance and wisdom and help. Prayer isn’t about rubbing some verbal lamp and having God do his genie thing and grant your wishes. But, this was just the first chapter. Perhaps we are just being too cynical. We need to give this a chance.
It didn’t get any better. The first scripture verse mentioned in the book didn’t occur until page 36, and it wasn’t even part of the text. It was a clipart-type picture thrown on the page seemingly to increase the page count. It seems to me that if you are writing a book about talking to God, you might want to include some things that He has to say about it. Now, in the book's defense, there is a list of scripture verses in one of the appendices. However, this is mainly given as a list of verses to discuss and pray about, nothing specific to why and how we should be praying.
In addition to not actually helping us figure out how to pray, this book was difficult to read. The chapters are broken into sections that are typically two to four paragraphs long. Each section seems to jump to another topic with no transition or even relevance to what was being said in the previous section.
My husband and I were very disappointed in this book. We know that praying together is very important to our marriage and our Christian walks. We also know that praying together can do everything that this book claims it can do. But, that isn’t the point of praying. We want to be in the presence of our Lord, humbling ourselves in His majesty. We don’t want to be kids shouting “Trick-or-Treat” and hoping we get the good candy bars. If you want to pray with your spouse, I highly encourage you to do so. However, you will get more use out of the title of this book than you will from actually reading it.

Couples Who Pray is a book written by Squire Rushnell and Louise DuArt about a 40 day prayer challenge for couples. The book has inspirational stories from celebrities and their spouses such as Dianna Ross, Denzel Washington, Scott Hamilton and others who have taken the challenge and the impact it has had on their relationship. I found the book uplifting, very easy to read with some unexpected revelations concerning Christian marriages. The well-known authors discuss the core values needed in a healthy relationship that may have gotten lost in today’s society. It offers research from Universities on the power of prayer and many personal stories of overcoming trials through a personal and intimate relationship with God. The authors promise that taking the 40 day challenge of 5 minutes a day will improve your marriage in areas of lovemaking, respect, communication and overall happiness. In the back of the book is a questionnaire for both husband and wife along with instructions to complete it online. The purpose of this questionnaire is to go back to your answers after the 40 days and compare the before and after. According to the authors most of the couples who have taken the challenge have continued on with daily prayer after the 40 days. My husband and I are looking forward to taking the challenge ourselves and will post our personal results when our 40 days have been completed. Overall I would recommend this book to any couple who is interested in improving their relationship with their partner and with God. I received this book for free from booksneeze.com.

Couples Who Pray by Squire Rushnell & Louise DuArt is a book that a husband a wife wrote together. They talk about knowing first hand what is like to pray as a couple and the benefits that come out of this such as better communication, agreements become the norm, satisfaction in lovemaking, increase in respect, etc. In this book they have gone in detail about a study that was provided by Gallup and Baylor University. Then it goes into detail about their 40 day love challenge about praying together for 40 days for at least 5 minutes a day. Then there are also testimonials from people who have done this and have seen a difference in their marriage.
After that being said, in theory, this would be a good book. However, it was disappointing at times. Much of this was common sense on why you would want to pray but at the same time it doesn't address how to get on the same page as your spouse. It rubbed me the wrong way a couple of times when it was like keeping up with the movie stars and how it changed their marriage. Or the how it's about what you want and nothing is said about what God wants.
this is a fast, easy read...just not what I was looking for.
( I was provided a free copy of this book through a book review program and provided this information based on my opinion of the book.)

Couples Who Pray by SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt
Couples who pray together stay together seems a little cliche, but perhaps that is what the authors are trying to say. There is great power when a couple lays down their defenses and bares all before each other and before God. Just like our clothes come off when we're intimate physically, intimate prayer also strips us bare and reveals the core heart issues. Prayer together can transform you personally and as a couple if you allow it to. The authors challenge each couple to begin a habit of praying together with a 40 Day Prayer Challenge. What a great idea!
I've always felt a passion for prayer and a deep desire to pray with my husband. Sometimes it feels like we're on such different spiritual planes that praying together has been hard. I enjoyed this book and the idea that prayer together can bring a couple closer to each other and God, but unfortunately both partners have to be willing to come together in prayer to make this work. I enjoyed the testimonies of couples who have seen God work as they pray together. Several celebrity couples shared how prayer together has made them stronger and it was refreshing to see this perspective from Hollywood instead of the breakup stories we hear so often on the news.
Overall, I thought this was a good book and even though I am praying by myself right now, it encouraged me to trust God that someday I can be a part of a praying couple.

I recently was sent a book to review, and have been anticipating the arrival of it! I was checking the mailbox daily to see if there was a package! The book I was so eagerly awaiting? "Couples Who Pray: The Most Intimate Act Between a Man and a Woman", by SQuire Rushnell and Louise Duart.
It finally arrived. I tore into the package. I completed the initial questionnaire . I started flipping through and scanning the chapters. I was highly disappointed.
Most of the first 3 chapters are about the study done on 2 dozen couples, and about the statistics of the world today regarding marriage. Did I mention that they suggest several different places that you can sign-up online at their website for a small fee to compare your scores with the scores of others (among other "benefits" from their site)? That's what I need...to compare my marriage to someone else's!
Finally, I read through the "40 day" part of the book. It was not very helpful, and they didn't give clear instructions that I couldn't found elsewhere. What had sounded like a great book for my husband and I to do together for the next 40 days had turned in to a big disappointment.
My husband and I will pray together for 40 days, but without the help of the book!
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through BookSneeze, and was not required to post a positive review.

This book is not what I expected. I was looking for a good book about praying with my spouse that honors God and protects us from the evil one. This book is all about self-honoring prayer, not God-honoring prayer. It promotes prayer that is all about self, what YOU can get out of prayer, NOT God. I was very disappointed and would not recommend it at all. It missed the point of praying completely. Another side note about the book- it encourages self-honoring tithing as well. And I quote, Tithing is "about you, and what happens to you when you give to others." pg. 125. I pray that God will still bring good from this book- at least it encourages married couples to pray, which unforunately, not many do.
