I am indebted to William Barclay, for it is this set of commentaries that have sparked a resurgence of Bible study in my own life and the lives of our teenagers.
Barclay has an amazing way with words and he makes each passage come alive with vivid illustrations, enlightening history lessons, and practical take-aways.
I can't recommend this set enough. Get them, read them, and apply them.

Nobody can write like William Barclay. His style is lively, quotable engaging and enlightening. DA Carson said of him the he could not be boring even if he tried to. The historical backgrounds he provides to the scriptures are invaluable.
The only drawbacks are
1. His theology tends to be off track in a number of places. He sometimes propagates some really heretical views. If one is able to read discerningly, then these volumes will be a real asset to your studies.

2. This revised editions have cut out so much of the material in the original. If you find the original publications in a used bookshop, do not hesitate to purchase them, you wont regret it!
Other than that, this is a great set that I eagerly recommend.

I bought this set for a colleague. I have a set of an older version. I always use them as reference for study and reflections. Very comprehensive. Gives background information e.g. of the custom at the time, the geography, etc. and then explains systematically the meaning of the text in down to earth and easy to understand way. Great work by Barclay.

William Barclay's 17 volume commentary on the New Testament includes his own translation of the New Testament and a commentary that provides excellent background information about Greek and Hebrew culture at the time of Jesus and profound insights about the meaning of scripture, not only when it was written, but for us today. So many times it is as if Barclay were writing his commentary for me. Barclay understands that the essence of God is his love for us.

My husband is the Bible scholar in the family and this was a gift for him. He is very happy with this set and is already spending time immersed in Barclay's timeless teachings. He had a set years ago but donated it with regret. Now his library is complete again.

I personlly have a problem with someone who "corrects" the King James. However, William Barclay's knowledge of the history and customs is unparalelled. He applies the truths of Scripture in a way that no other commentator does. This is an excellent set. The 2nd best set I have.

This series is a must for all serious biblical scholars and lay people who want a unique insight to the Holy scriptures..Wm. Barclay was, along with Bonfoffer and Nieghbur, one of the preeminent theologians of the millennium.

These commentary's are the greatest I have found. Easy to read and understand. The average person could find these helpful in the deeper study of the scriptures. I have the OT ones on order so I can have the entire set. Can't wait to read them.....

Very helpful for individual and group study. Easy to read and helps to better understand difficult passages while also adding interesting historical information from the time of Christ. It also follows scripture easily by chapter and verse. Excellent study material.
