I bought this book for the cultural and historical information and am pleased with the archeology etc.. It was written by people who do not believe the Bible is inspired; they believe what it says only if archeological finds support it The writer of Genesis "imagined" that people lived to be so old etc.. I like the history BUT it is hard to read something so anti God and anit Bible.

There is a lot of great information in this book but it fails to capture the true spiritual essence of the scriptures. Didn't appreciate the comment about how the biblical law leaves open the possibility of consensual sexual relationships between men belonging to two different households. Leviticus 18:22 says do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable. This seems pretty straight forward to me and appears to address the sexual relationships between males.

Very bias and liberal viewpoints; read it cover to cover for an introduction to the Hebrew Bible course at seminary and gave it away the following fall to a new student as I had no desire to refer to it again. I disliked the format as it tries to be thematic rather than by the Biblical books and I found it hard to use for research purposes. I also found the content to be very bias and presenting theories as fact. If someone is to use this book I would suggest they get another Introduction to the Old Testament book from Zondervan or Concordia Publishing House in order to be exposed to alternative viewpoints and judge for themselves what is the stronger argument. Personally I have no desire to have a copy of this book or use it again.

This is a very liberal interpretation of some aspects of the word that disturbed me. Even suggesting that Jonathan and David engaged in a relationship beyond friendship. I have heard other liberal churches or groups express the same sentiment to justify their lifestyles. This publication was not for me.
