Westminster John Knox Press The Will of God: Answering the Hard Questions

How are we to know "the will of God?" In this honest discussion, veteran pastor and theologian James C. Howell considers a number of issues relating to God's will, how it is known, how it is done, and how we respond when bad things happen and we feel God is absent or has turned away from us. In this sensitive presentation, Howell explores these questions and provides ways of recognizing the true things to which we can hold in the midst of hard times.

Howell proceeds simply and practically to consider personal understandings of God, God's will for our lives, and ways in which God's will is lived. He reflects on what to do and believe when bad things happen, "why they happen, and the quest for God in the midst of it all, recognizing that God's will is for good. Howell provides pastoral and theological help for the issues we face in life, showing us what we can do and how to "believe even more deeply in God, even as we grieve losses, resist evil, and muster hope."

Questions for discussion accompany each chapter.

Disappointed in the format and would have wished there were more questions for a group study.

This book to realize what is God's Will for humans. We use God for blame but we'll take any credit for good outcomes.
It is a realization of who we are and how we are. God gave us a good brain but often it is misused for our own greed, selfishness, and jealousy. The God's Will is nothing but good for us just as you wish for your own child. You can beautify your mind with this book.

United Methodist Pastor James C. Howard has done an excellent job in this work on God's will - a book, he says, he has been writing for "over twenty-five." This is why it is such a good treatment of God's will and the tough questions that often accompany it. Written in two parts, Howell challenges some of the conventional ways of approaching the will of God. Because he writes as a seasoned pastor and skilled communicator, James focuses on a relationship with God, since that is God's will. When the relationship is nurtured some of the hard questions of life can be explored without fear, realizing the questions may never be answered. At the end of each chapter, he offers some questions for discussion, which engages the reader more intimately. An excellent read for someone struggling with the "whys" of hardship. This is also a good book to study in a small group setting.
