Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. The Gospel of Mark: New International Commentary on the New Testament [NICNT]

The Gospel of Mark [NICNT] argues that not only was this gospel the unveiling of a literary style previously unknown to classical culture, but that is also has a specific theological agenda to proclaim Jesus Christ. According to William Lane, the entire book is structured around the intention set down in 1.1 while also encouraging Christians who lived under the persecution of Nero. Lane provides a critical introduction noting the reception of Mark in church history and its preeminent status among modern scholars.

This was my first commentary on Mark and it's the one I always turn to first when needing consultation with the text. Lane is a trustworthy scholar who helps make sense of the Mark and brings deeper truths to the surface. This commentary - though not as technical as others - is very pastoral and offers deep insight into applying the text into the real lives of people. This will be a continuing treasure in my library.

Lane discusses the critical along with his more conservative views with proper balance. For Greek study I would also use the NIGNT entry as well. Overall this is an excellent resource for those who want a thorough study of the topics in Mark.
Lane's brief history of the book is also quite informative without being overly verbose. A good read as well.

This book on the gospel of Mark is good from the standpoint of a detailed discussion of the book but it is a lot of reading that requires clear focus and high concentration to achieve its knowledge. I also have the McGee commentary which I get more use of for my Bible study. It is much shorter commentary and to the point. I have found it useful. I will use this book more as a reference book to dig into verses where I need additional help.
