Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. The Epistles to the Colossians, to Philemon, and to the Ephesians: The New International Commentary on the New Testament

Bruce begins The Epistles to The Colossianss, To Philemon, & to The Ephesians [NICNT] is a broad commentary covering the origins, authorship, circumstances, and text of each letter. Bruce pays particular attention to the geographical issues related to each letter, while also noting the Jewish influences and the theological issues brought out in each book, both abstract (Colossians) and practical (Ephesians/Philemon).

According to Bruce, there are important reasons for linking Colossians, Philemon, and Ephesians together in one work, and through interacting with recent scholarship makes a very compelling case for his thesis. This is a section by section commentary covering all three books and provides separate introductions (in addition to the one listed above), analysis, and treatment of the text while drawing out the important theological issues.

As soon as I received FF Bruce's commentary, I put it to use in a men's Bible study I'm leading in Ephesians. It is clear and concise and covers the major theological, and exegetical topics with great care and knowledge. This is a great resource.

This has turned out to be a great book. The bulk of the text is great commentary on the English text, but there is also a lot of in-depth commentary on the greek text for those who are interested in it.

If you only own one commentary on Colossians, this would be a good one to have. On the other hand, I am currently taking a Colossians exegesis class, and I found this volume of little help for the more intricate details of the Greek text. He added little to the discussion that I could not find in other commentaries. I do enjoy most of what Bruce wrote, but I felt that a lot of this commentary was rehashing what had already been written. He does include an extensive helpful historical introduction to the setting in which Paul is writing at the beginning of the book.
