Zondervan Spirit Rising: Tapping into the Power of the Holy Spirit

The Christian life is impossible without the Holy Spirit, but many of us manage to live without His power in our lives. In Spirit Rising, pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, Jim Cymbala, seeks to reintroduce the often misunderstood third person of the Trinity. Many Christians fall into one of two camps: those who strongly emphasize the Holy Spirit tend to undervalue Biblical teaching; while other evangelicals are sold out on the Bible, but tend to undervalue the experience of the Spirit. Through a blend of solid Biblical teaching and by sharing the testimonies of those who have been transformed by the Spirit's presence in their lives, Cymbala shows how embracing the move of the Spirit is vital to living a life of spiritual power and victory.

Looking for a book to read one day, on Christianbook.com, I happened to see Spirit Rising was on special. I thought: "Oh neat, a book on the Holy Spirit. I've always wanted to learn more about that." (since in most Christian circles the talk is usually about Jesus or God, but not on the Holy Spirit.) I ordered it, because I wanted to learn more on a subject I admit I'm not as experienced in as I probably should be. When I received this book, I thought an endorsement from Francis Chan was especially interesting so I began reading Jim Cymbala's book.
Spirit Rising: Tapping into the Power of the Holy Spirit is a book, which as you probably are able to imagine it is, about the Holy Spirit. Jim opens the book on expressing a thought which I expressed earlier in this review: various Christian circles neither understand nor talk enough about the role of The Holy Spirit and that needs to change. The meat of the focus for Mr. Cymbala's book is The Holy Spirit, his church in Brooklyn, and testimonies from a few of his own parishioners. Does Jim speak of The Holy Spirit in a heretical way? And how insightful is Mr. Cymbala's book concerning The Holy Spirit? Spirit Rising does a good job getting started on helping a Christian become more in tune with The Holy Spirit, but it is a light dusting of the surface readers are craving.
I am glad Mr. Cymbala did not promote anything heretical within his book, because the very phrase: "Tapping into the power of The Holy Spirit" is a risky phrase some might misinterpret as a piece of lingo from the heretical Immergant Church movement. I also appreciate the testimonies his parishioners gave for Spirit Rising, because some are very inspiring to read. My favorite testimony to read was concerning the woman immigrant from Latin America; though at times sad the ending is encouraging. Though these things are good, I also felt there could have been more to this book, because there were some unanswered questions... The book seems primarily focused more on trying to convince you into agreeing The Holy Spirit is a neglected teaching and ought to be further pursued through the example of his church in New York, rather THAN actually teaching you things about The Holy Spirit itself... Though I learned some things while reading Mr. Cymbala's book, I was a little disappointed that time was more spent on talking about Brooklyn Tabernacle than The Holy Spirit itself...

I read a lot and I'm especially drawn to books that I sense the Spirit of God has ignited to transform me. This is one of those books. I can sense the Holy Spirit doing a work in me as I read each page. It makes me want to kneel before the throne room, with uplifted hands and thank God for the great comforter, helper He has sent to us. It compels me to open more of myself up to the Holy Spirit and to long for Him to change me to be like Christ. My goodness! what else could a book do? It's a must read if you are hungry for transformation.

Pastor Cymbala's unique style of presenting from his own experiences words and then testimonies from others to arouse our belief in a compassionate God. I am always emotionely and Spirit filled from his and their experiences. I can empathize with some of the testimonies. Likewise, Christ suffered more than we ever will. He knows and His love exceeds anything this world has to offer!

Jim Cymbala's Spirit Rising is a must read for anyone who wants to experience more of God's power at work in their life. Conversations about God are common place, not so much about Jesus Christ, and almost non-existant about the Holy Spirit. Jim does a fantatastic job focusing us on the third person of the Trinity and lays a solid foundation for important study and conversation.

Spirit Rising is another excellence book from Jim Cymbala. He is always scripturally sound and with his ability to draw from living testimonies from within his own church he paints a power full picture. He is able to show the practical side of true faith when people seek after and live in obedience to the Holy Spirit's guidance.

The Holy Spirit is not talked, preached or even written about very often. This book is a great addition to the subject. Have you experienced the Holy Spirit? Spirit Rising: Tapping into the Power of the Holy Spirit highlights some great times where the Spirit has moved Christians to do things not totally knowing why but the results were amazing. Have you felt the need to pray for a certain person or situation and not found peace until you did? The author, Jim Cymbala, says this is the moving of the Holy Spirit in you to pray for and express concern for others around you.
The author also discusses the jobs of the Holy Spirit and how He has been sent to help us here on earth. I found the book to be interesting but not one I would read again. I did enjoy the stories and felt the author did a good job at making his points. If you want to learn more about the Holy Spirit and His influence on your life as a Christian, this would be a good book to read.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

The Holy Spirit is God's agent here on earth. Why are Holy Spirit interventions so rare in our churches. Why are Christians lives dry and mechanical? Cymbala wonders if we are missing out because we are not properly acquainted with the person and work of the Holy Spirit. He has written this book so we can learn more about who the Holy Spirit is, what happens when He moves, and how we can surrender to His leading.
He explains why we need the Helper Jesus promised. He shows that the first believers expected the Spirit to do great things. We need to return to that faith.
Christianity is hopeless without the Spirit. “The indwelling of God through the Holy Spirit makes Christianity different from any other religions on earth.” (38)
The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and lives within us. We are to be controlled by the Spirit. (Not every Christian is.)
The Spirit shows up in church. “...[O]ur Lord Jesus Christ never intended that his church operate without visitations and blessings from the living Spirit of God.” (35) The Spirit instills a hunger for the Word in the believer. While we hear a preacher through our ears and process through our mind, the Holy Spirit speaks to the heart on a spiritual level. The Spirit produces joy in the believer (different than happiness). The Spirit produces an increasing sensitivity to our sin and a desire for Christlikeness, working in the deepest part of our being. The Spirit provides the power when we have none. Cymbala writes of what will happen when we surrender to the Holly Spirit: love, fellowship with God, boldness - overcoming fear, powerful prayer, and being set apart and sent out for service.
Cymbala overheard the comment, “To be conscious of the Holy Spirit solves 90 percent of our problems.” (102) Cymbala's aim in this book is to help us do exactly that.
Spiritual courage is needed today. We need to stir up the work of the Spirit within us, he says.
He includes stories of people transformed by the Holy Spirit, in their own words. It is amazing and encouraging to read of the Spirit working through ordinary people in extraordinary ways.
“Without the Spirit,” Cymbala writes, “Christianity is reduced to head knowledge about God, empty traditions, and a social club mentality. We need to ask God to give us a fresh revelation of what his church was meant to look like.” (195) “When the Spirit works through surrendered, faith-filled people like you and me, Christ will be glorified. The church will be built up. The Word of God will be honored. The kingdom of God will be extended.” (196)
What an encouraging book! It gives a picture of what the church looks like when the Spirit is given permission to work without reservation. I highly recommend this book, especially to church leaders.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Spirit Rising talks about the Holy Spirit and the work of the third person of the trinity. “The Holy Spirit is God’s agent on earth” author, Jim Cymbala says. He: “chooses people for ministry assignments;” “searches out the deep things of God to make them known to believers;” “makes Christ a living reality to the believer;” is “coequal with both the Father and Son.” We can struggle to be like Jesus but unless we give our lives to the Holy Spirit, everything spiritual will remain a struggle.
The author tells of many testimonies of miracles done by the Holy Spirit. My favorite is the story of Roma Black. I wonder what happened to that hit man. Is he a person who will no longer kill? Are there murders that this nation will never experience because of him? How could there be any other outcome after the Holy Spirit climbs in the car with you. But this tells the story of Roma.
The author’s need to pray for Pakistan demonstrates one way the Holy Spirit works—Pastor Cymbala felt possessed by a need and unable to let it go. He says that the way to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit is to obey His voice when it comes. Pray to be sure it is Him, but do what He wants when you are sure. We must succumb to the Spirit, letting His direction be all we want, taking time to hear His voice.
Pastor Cymbala leads a charismatic church, but anyone who wants more of God will find Him here no matter what the reader’s church denomination. My prayer changed after reading this book.
I received this book from NetGalley.
