We have loved using this book. We are towards the end of the lessons this year and my daughter is asking if she can do extra lessons each week. The teacher guide provides tons of extension activities and weblinks- we even tried our hand at making hardtack as a part of experiencing a sailor's meal. The reader is in a story format and she will read it out loud each week and is able to complete the notebooking in the activity book on her own. We extend lessons she is extra interested in with documentaries and museum trips. Another reviewer cited being required to memorize names and dates- but we haven't experienced this. There is a timeline that is optional and for us just serves to keep the events in perspective. Perhaps the other reviewer insists on a closed book for the unit reviews? We have had lots of fun with this curriculum and look forward to using Vol. 2 next year.

After a very long search, I finally purchased this course for my daughter. She's doing very well with it. It involves a lot of memorization, but this is typical for early history courses. The research questions provided for each unit greatly expand the course beyonf the memorization.

My daughter loved this curriculum and asked for the second year. It was very easy to follow and we enjoyed it very much. It is very easy to adapt this curriculum to your child's learning style! We look forward to using the 2nd level!

I chose this book because we enjoyed The Mystery of History so much and they have the same publisher. This was a mistake. The text is very dry and focuses on memorizing dates of battles and names of generals. By the end of the year, my kids had forgotten all the dates and names and really didn't know anything new about American History.
