Zondervan 1 and 2 Thessalonians: Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament [ZECNT]

1 and 2 Thessalonians is another release in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series---the only commentary series with a graphical display, theology in application section and identification of the main idea for each section.

These early epistles show how Paul created his characteristic communication strategy: sending letters by a trusted representative, in order to strengthen his disciples and provide answers for new questions. The mostly gentile church of Thessalonica lived among people who mocked the gospel teachings of monotheism, personal purity, and the resurrection of the body. Paul writes that God had indeed selected to be his people and in time he would vindicate them before the world. Shorgen uses exegetical and rhetorical insights and Jewish and Greco-Roman background the bring out the meaning of his letters. He underscores Paul's work as church-planter and pastor, a man who consciously set himself forth as an example to believers. According to Shogren, the apostle still stands as a model for those who wish to proclaim God's word in God's way.

Designed for the pastor and Bible teacher, the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament brings together commentary features rarely gathered in one volume. Written by notable evangelical scholars, each volume treats the literary context and structure of the passage in the original Greek and each author provides an original translation based on the literary structure.

The series consistently provides a main point, exegetical outline, verse-by-verse commentary, and theology in application in each section of every commentary. Critical scholarship informs each step but does not dominate the commentary, allowing readers to concentrate on the biblical author's message as it unfolds. While primarily designed for those with a basic knowledge of biblical Greek, all who strive to understand and teach the New Testament will find these books beneficial.

I found Shogren's commentary on 1 & 2 Thessalonians to be a delight read. Shogren models the difference between being technical and being a mere technician. A mere technician is one who is able to dissect and analyze but is not able to demonstrate how accurate analysis leads to anything significant. On the other hand, one can be technical in a very helpful way. What makes Shogren's contribution to 1 & 2 Thessalonians so necessary is that he delves into the technicalities of the text without leaving the reader there--a rare find in modern day Christian scholarship. This commentary is chalked full of practical, pastoral, and theological insights. Nonetheless, these insights are not plucked out of thin air. Shogren demonstrates how these down to earth truths flow right out of a close analysis of the text. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to discern the voice of God in the text of 1 & 2 Thessalonians. I believe that pastors especially will find this commentary to be helpful on both the technical and pastoral level. If you read through this commentary prayerfully with an open Bible you will find your head stimulated and your heart challenged and satisfied.
