An oldie, but goodie. The apocryphal texts are not given the same weight as those that were included in the canon; nevertheless, there is much valuable background material here for interpreting ancient times. Also, they can be read for spiritual edification. From Tobit to Judith to Maccabees. 493 pages, softcover. Random House.

This is a must have book. In fact, you should read the apocrypha because it is used historically. Without a knowledge of it, you will lack analytic abilities toward literature in the western world. Also, you will lack the appreciation of different constructs in Jewish thought. Any serious researcher of Jedeo-Christian Literature & Culture will have this among other texts in their library.

Review 2 for The Apocrypha

Not a must have, but nevertheless an interesting addition to have in your library. I can understand why some of the books where left out but on that same note there are some books that could have been put in the canon and only added to what is already the greatest book ever written.
