NavPress The Joseph Road: Choices That Determine Your Destiny - eBook

For those of us whose dreams have been shattered, there is overwhelming hope in the ancient story of Joseph. Joseph's winding tale of promise and betrayal, provide the backdrop for Jerry White's lessons for our lives today. Not an analytical treatment of Joseph's life, The Joseph Road is more informal and engaging. White links lessons from Joseph's life to your own, so you see struggles in a new light--one of great hope.

The biblical story of Joseph has always fascinated me. Like a beautiful quilt, multiple stories of many individuals' lives and struggles comprise the pattern which God has then assembled and pieced together. Stories of how people relate to one another and overcome obstacles with God's help. Yet, most of all, stories about how people are transformed and strengthened by God and how "for those who love God all things work together for good."Jerry White, the author of The Joseph Road, weaves his own life stories honestly into this latest book detailing Joseph's life and the lessons it holds for us all. White's background in discipleship shows forth in his insightful, readable style and his Reflection Questions concluding each chapter, making this book well suited for a Bible study. Relevant stories from the author's own struggles in his family, his career in the Air Force and at NASA are thoughtfully interwoven into the chapters.Honestly, I did initially wonder whether White would have much to add to this familiar story. Yet he has shared quite a few insights into the life of Joseph and his struggles, both explicitly drawn from Scripture as well as more subtly implied. Perseverance in the midst of difficulties, serving others faithfully, recognizing God's workings in your life, and extending grace and blessing to others are just a few of the lessons which this book shares.I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review program. The Joseph Road has been a such a great blessing. I would like to thank Navpress for sending me a free copy of this book to review. Jerry White has done a fantastic job of bringing out practical, rubber meets the road truth and applications from the biblical account of Joseph. The Joseph Road brings into view God's sovereignty and our responsibility when dealing with life's difficulties. So many books offer little more than popular self-help theology under the guise of Christian truth, but this author succeeds in exposing life's troubles in light of God's truth explaining how we should react accordingly. Joseph's life serves as an example of how God uses different circumstances, many of which we don't understand, to bring about his ultimate good. The Joseph Road will show you how to navigate and respond to these trials while keeping your eyes on the God who controls them. I highly recommend this book to everyone! This would also be very effective in a group bible study where participants could encourage each other along the Joseph Road.

The Joseph Road by Jerry White is a practical and illustrative book with a powerful message. Systematically investigating and developing the story of Joseph and applying it to real life, Jerry White deals with hard and important issues we all face as we walk the Christian road, such as pain, hardship, and ill-fortune. Through the life of Joseph, Jerry White shows us how to cope with trials and tribulations that we face, how to overcome these issues, how to have peace and joy through these times, and how to glorify our Lord in our sufferings. Perseverance, the sovereignty of God in our testings, brokenness, and grace are themes that Dr. White returns to continually throughout his exposition. It is a clearly written and personal book, in which Dr. White shares some of his own travels on "The Joseph Road." Each chapter concludes with brief study and reflection questions the reader or a small group may benefit from. It is an encouraging book for anyone who honestly wishes to deal with the setbacks of life; it will give you hope and direction and endurance in your walk.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review program. The Joseph Road is a good, basic Christian Living book. It's an easy read: easy to follow and easy to understand. It had basic (but good) insights for those whose lives aren't working out as expected but who want to walk in a God-honoring way through it all.The author looked to Scripture as our guide (specifically at the account of Joseph found in Genesis, but he also quoted other parts of the Bible). He used Scripture, some Bible background information, and reasonable supposition of what Joseph went through emotionally to describe what Joseph went through and how he reacted. He then showed how to apply what we learned to our lives today.I was initially concerned that there seemed to be a slant toward people can do whats right if they decide they want to, yet most people I know struggle to consistently do so. I was happy that later parts of the book pointed out that we need God at work in our lives in order to be consistent in our walk with Him.Overall, Id recommend this as a basic book with good guidance about how to act when people act unfairly toward you, when people betray you, and when things just dont work out as expected.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review program.
