Baker Encountering John: The Gospel in Historical, Literary, and Theological Perspective

In his new commentary, Kostenberger surveys the content and theology of the Fourth Gospel and includes photos, maps, line drawings, and an instructor's manual. The uniqueness of the Gospel of John is readily apparent. In contrast to the overlapping material in the Synoptic Gospels, John shares only about 10 percent of its content with Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The uniqueness of this book is also readily apparent. Unlike traditional commentators on the book, Andreas Kostenberger employs a lucid writing style and a number of pedagogical enhancements that make this a perfect tool for mastering the content and key interpretive issues of the Gospel of John.

Andreas J. Kostenberger (Ph.D., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is professor of New Testament and Greek at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

"This is a winner. 'Come on in!' the introductory chapter invites. The format, layout, and the contents quickly engage the reader onto the page and into the book. This volume is one in the Encountering Bible Series, intended by Baker for introductory classes at the college or university level. I would have appreciated this introduction to John during my years as a serious lay Bible student, and will certainly add it to my collection as a pastor."--Ashland Theological Journal

"Kostenberger provides a useful discussion of John vis a vis the synoptic Gospels. . . . Kostenberger offers a straightforward and convincing explanation. . . . Will prove useful to those who desire to better understand the Gospel of John but are looking for something more accessible than a standard commentary."--Philip Kern, The Briefing

"Very readable. . . . It provides the general reader with a good grasp of this Gospel with many word studies and cultural insights thrown in. The volume sports 20 sidebars, 31 tables, 4 maps, 2 appendices, 10 excursuses, a glossary, an annotated bibliography, a Subject index, and a Scripture Index. . . . Each chapter has study questions and a summary. A unique feature is that it has its own concordance."--Charles H. Ray, Conservative Theological Journal

I'm already enjoying the book. I am a leader in a Bible study and used the book like this on on Genesis last year. It helped a lot. I'm sure this one on John will also. It is easy to read and full of helpful imfo.

I am involved in prison ministry at one of Indiana's State Prisons, and we are teaching verse by verse through the Book of John. I have many Bible Commentaries, but I have found Encountering John to provide additional insight that enriches our Bible Study.
