Goodbye to Yesterday

Date:May 1, 2013
Luke and Meredith Stolzfus had been married a little over a year. Their relationship was great until Luke was laid off his job. Financial worry put a strain on their marriage. When Luke was offered a business opportunity by his uncle in Middlebury, Indiana, he gladly accepted. But he had to be gone for two weeks. Meredith felt he shouldn’t leave Bird-In-Hand, PA.
Luke still made the trip to Indiana. She couldn’t wait for his return; she had something important to tell him. She anxiously waited for Luke to call to let her know he arrived at his uncle’s. The story ends with Meredith waiting for a call that doesn’t look like is going to be made.
The main characters are Luke and Meredith. The reader meets their family members along the way. A drug addict, Alex Mitchell, is also introduced in the story. I thought it was a bit odd how his life was so detailed yet I didn’t learn as much about Luke and Meredith.
Wanda Brunstetter has a simple writing style that I enjoy.
Readers may not like that this is not an entire book. This story is a novella and is meant read to be with the rest of the series. You won’t learn much from just reading this novella by itself. Meredith kept obsessing so much over the weather that I thought I knew what was going to happen but I was surprised. Maybe this series of novellas won’t be as predictable as most usually are. I personally like Amish novellas - probably because the happy endings are so predictable. Who doesn’t enjoy a happy ending?

I liked the story, but I do not like the format of 6 different books. I want the whole story in one book. It would also be less expensive. Will it ever be published as one book?

This is a great fast paced little book. The story moved so fast but was written so well. I can't believe she was about to put so much into 121 pages. Most short novels or novellas as they call them sometimes are lacking in substance or character development. Not Goodbye to Yesterday, she develops the whole story, has you loving Meredith and Luke and making you feel like you just read a really thick book. When I got to the end I was floored and was like "NO this can't be the end! What happens?" This first one got me hooked and I have books 2-4 on hold at my library can't wait for book 5 and 6 to come out, or my library to add them I most know how this ends!!!!

Luke and Meredith Stoltzfus have been married for barely over a year when their financial situation reaches it's breaking point. Out of a job for some time, Luke is barely making ends meet. But when an irresistible opportunity comes for him to travel to Middlebury, Indiana he persuades Merrie to let him go. Despite her reservations, Meredith lets Luke leave their home in Lancaster County to pursue a new trade that could bring them out of the troubles surfacing their new marriage. But circumstances no one can anticipate come between them while they are apart. Can they find their way back to each other despite the fact that their lives have been destroyed?
There have been a good many complaints to how this series is being marketed, but despite all of that, I have to say I've found myself wondering how it will all end. Brunstetter's simplistic writing style isn't exactly my favorite, but this series got my attention - if nothing but to satisfy my curiosity in the Stoltzfus's story. One thing that stood out to me about the character of Meredith is that she clings to her faith despite her fears and uncertainties. Short and sweet, it will leave you wanting more. And with five more installments to the story, there is plenty to look forward to.

Ok, here goes, I was one to always have a book in my hand. My family would ask,<Is that all you do is read?> I would reply yes! Wanda is my favorite author. I couldn't get in the habit of reading anymore after a bad car wreck last year, don't know why, and actually when I started reading Goodbye To Yesterday, all about the triumphs of Luke and Meredith, I could not put it down ! I think this book has brought me out of my despair....when you read Wanda's books, you actually, or I do become part of the family in the book ! It's definitely a can't put down book!!! I can't wait til next month for the next! Miriam has prayed without ceasing for Luke on his journey, but this book is def an edge of the seat novel! Thank you, Wanda, for starting this series : A Must Read!

The beginning of this novel is so good. The problem with the ecomony hitting the Amish is something I have always wondered about. I know they struggle just like the rest of us, but this book really brings out the reality of their struggles being so much like my own. The worries, concerns and dependence on God is so real. It ends with you wanting to just buy the next book to see what happens to Luke after Alex so viscously beat him and stole half of Luke and Meredth's life savings. How badly is Luke hurt? Does he make it to Indiana or does he get stuck in Philladelphia or does he make it back home and never reach Indiana? Will Alex find the peace with God he so desperately needs. Does his and Luke's paths ever cross again? I will need to read the next book to find out.

What a great book like all of Wanda's books. The characters are in a situation so true to life today. I'm caught up in their lives already as if I know them. I cannot wait to see what happens next in the lives of Meredith & Luke and how their faith will be put to the test to get them through the situations they are in.

As with all of Wanda's books, this one was just as vivid as the rest. I always see myself in the womens' shoes and I can feel as they do and would. In Goodbye to Yesterday, Meredith is having to make a choice of telling her husband Luke about possibly being pregnant when he already has so much on his shoulders. Wanda's books always teach me a new lesson on being a better mother and wife.

This is book 1 of 6 books in the series, it is a very small and short book. Luke and Meredith are Amish living in Lancaster County, PA. When Luke loses his job, he makes the decision to take on a new opportunity and make a quick trip to Middlebury for job training. Luke leaves Meredith on the farm by herself to take care of things while he is gone. While he is gone Meredith finds out she is expecting there first child and has to make the decision when is the perfect time to tell Luke. The book ends as Luke is traveling and he is mugged during a bus stop, and the book leaves us hanging as to what happens.
I did enjoy this book, however, I don't like the part of it being a very small book and only 121 pages. I would prefer the whole story in one novel. I don't think I would spend the money to purchase all 6 books. The price would be to costly as to purchasing one book.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the Handlebar bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. "Goodbye to Yesterday" is the first book in six in the Lancaster County Saga written by Wanda E. Brunstetter. This is my first Brunstetter novel, though she is quite famous in the Amish Fiction world. "Goodbye" is really a novella; easily read in less than a day. It is the story of a couple of newly weds, Luke and Meredith, who have already fallen on hard times. Luke has been laid off for six months and anxiety of it all is starting to wear on the both of them. Luke gets an opportunity to travel to Indiana to learn a new trade and along the way is attacked by a drug addict. It ends quite abruptly, yet leaves you wanting more. Quite the cliffhanger, really.
This is a good start on a series. I wish it was longer. I would recommend it to Amish Fiction lovers and fiction readers alike.

I am a faithful reader of Wanda Brunstetter's books, but this left me feeling disappointed. I am not a fan of this short spurts of a "whole" book and that is what it feels like she has done. I was not expecting it to be one book or storyline broken into parts. I was more thinking along the lines of novellas. VERY disappointed! If I want to own the whole series (and apparently will need to to be able to remember where the events left off), it is going to be a pretty expensive series that is really going to be more like the size of 2 or 2 1/2 books. Not too excited about this delivery system!
I also didn't feel like the books really gave that Amish feel that we have come love from Brunstetter's books.
Cancelled all my pre-orders and will just wait until the "series" is completely out, then read it as a whole. SAD!
