Once more, I've thoroughly enjoyed another Dan Walsh book. Suitable for either gender. Gets you thinking about what you would have done in the same situation. Recommend it.

What a great story! Such imagination, really it is two stories in one going on at the same time. This book is beautifully written, clear, has an easy reading flow and is a real page turner. The author has done a great job in creating characters that me as a reader cares about! I wanted to know what happens with Michael, what happens with Gerard. The location of the present day story has some beautiful and very descriptive information about Charleston. I could visualize Gerard’s stately home quite clearly. This book is unique and well worth your time.

This book is so different from any other story I’ve ever read, because of its intriguing storyline and the fact that it’s a story within an even more fascinating story. And they are woven together beautifully so that at times it seemed like the past and present had magically merged! ‘The Discovery’ is a riveting blend of history, espionage, mystery, romance and a life-changing inheritance. I was touched by the love Claire’s parents showed – strong enough to set their daughter free, even though they knew that her future was anything but certain. Along the way we see how little white lies, as they usually do, come back to haunt a person, till it finally sinks in that only ‘the truth will set us free’. As is sometimes the case, it takes unusual hardships for some to turn back to God, as we see with Ben in this story. Dan Walsh has penned a captivating book that will keep you hanging on to every word, for the sheer thrill of the ride it takes you on.

Well-known writer, Gerard Warner, died and left half his estate to his son and aunt Fran, giving the four grandchildren an equal amount of the second half, making them all millionaires. However, Michael Warner, one of the grandsons, inherits millions minus the appraisal price of his grandfather’s Charleston estate as his inheritance. As the family’s aspiring writer, his grandfather saw potential in him as a writer and knew he would appreciate the house the most. Any future royalties from Gerard’s books would be dispersed as they came in.
Michael searches the whole house for anything, pictures, photos, newspaper clippings, letters, etc., to uncover his grandparents’ pasts, but he comes up empty-handed. That is, until he was sitting at Gramps desk, now his. Michael finds a hidden, unpublished manuscript and partial journal—which were left intentionally for him to find. His grandpa knew Michael would know what to do with it.
Michael delves into the manuscript mostly because it was written by Gramps. It was an exciting tale set around WWII, with episodes of suspense, spies, sabotage, Abwehr commanders, and FBI agents. He soon discovers the manuscript is a love story wrought with joy, pain, loss, faith and personal sacrifice to bond with the love of a lifetime. As he voraciously continues to read the manuscript, he realizes how it will change his past and future, as well as his family.
Knowing that German agents hid out in America after WWII to avoid being caught, brought to trial and possible put to death, this story, The Discovery, is so credible. I was so absorbed with the caution and white lies Ben made to cover his tracks. I found myself lost in the joys of Ben and Claire’s new love. The danger that the different characters would be caught was always in the back of my mind. The patriotism that poured forth to save American lives was astounding when compared to today’s lack thereof. The sacrifice of two families caught in the bulls-eye of a deep, longing love is astounding.
As with previous books, Dan is able to draw you into the personal lives of the characters, sensing the depth of feelings flowing between parents and child, as well as Ben and Claire. The depths of danger are palpable, as agents triangulate into position to take down the perpetrators.
One gets so caught up in the intrigue of the manuscript, that one is jolted back to real time when Michael and Jenn correspond about what he’s found and what he thinks it all means. It’s basically two stories in one, which is my favorite style of writing. The point of view is mostly through the eyes of Michael in the main storyline and Ben in the inner story. Michael definitely ascertains the ramifications of what he is reading.
Now, most covers do not necessarily catch my eye, but this one does. Mostly because of the floral parts, but also because I now know it’s a part of the country I’ve never seen in person. As great as the cover is, though, it’s the novel’s content that kept me engrossed in the story lines. Another great book by Dan Walsh!

The Discovery is a beautifully written romance, with plenty of action to keep the drama moving along, fascinating scenes of suspense, and a love story that will appeal to both female and male readers. Reading novels written by Dan Walsh is a treat, as he has a strong command of the English language, with the right mix of detail and action to provide a thoroughly satisfying read. My one caution about the novel is that some of the elements of the plot required me to suspend my belief somewhat, as I wondered whether something would actually happen that way, and whether the characters would make the choices they did (I won't say more for fear of giving away the book). I was pleased to read the after-ward that explained the inspiration for the book, and marvel at how history itself can be stranger than fiction! Walsh, as always, does a fine job of creating likeable and realistic characters, and I wish that this were not a stand-alone novel so that I might visit them again.
I strongly recommend this novel to those who enjoy novels that blend contemporary and historical elements, with a theme of sacrificial love running throughout. The Discovery is sure to please on many different levels, and I give this book a solid recommendation and a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Are there any Nicholas Sparks lovers reading this blog? If so, then you need to pick up this book by Dan Walsh and see for yourself how much his writing compares to Nicholas Sparks. I absolutely LOVED this book. It kept me turning page after page because I couldn't wait to discover the mystery of Gerard Warner.
Dan did a wonderful job putting a story within a story. I was hooked on this book from the first page and had difficulty putting it down to go to sleep. The "book" by Gerard had so many interesting twists and turns that I was amazed and had difficulty predicting what would happen next. I absolutely loved the ending to this book. Dan tied it up nicely and left you with the feeling that you just journeyed through history with an amazing man, Gerard. I actually felt like he was a real character and I had discovered his story for myself!

True Literary Treasure

Reminiscent of the story-telling style of Nicholas Sparks and Charles Martin, The Discovery is a true literary treasure. Don't think that by comparing Dan Walsh to other popular authors I'm saying that this story has already been written half a dozen times. On the contrary, The Discovery is unique in both story and style.
Michael Warner inherits his novelist grandfather's Charleston estate upon his death. Instantly wealthy, he and his wife quit their jobs, move to Charleston, and Michael settles in to finally write his long-awaited first novel. While moving into the home, Michael discovers one final gift from his grandfather—an unpublished manuscript.
As Michael reads the incredibly emotional final story from his grandfather, he is swept away by the intrigue of German spies on American soil, an unlikely romance, and life in Daytona Beach during World War II. The more Michael reads, the more he realizes that his grandfather may have been keeping some secrets of his own.
The Discovery, a story within a story, is unlike any other book I've read. When the discovered manuscript first came to light, I wanted to know more. Thankfully, Dan included it in its entirety! It was easy to follow along which "story" I was reading as they look distinctly different throughout the book. The story contained within the pages of the manuscript was fascinating and I found myself wanting to figure out how much of this really happened (German spies on American beaches during WWII?!). As much as I enjoyed the historical story, I felt a deeper connection with Michael and his wife, and I wished that the story could have given me a bit more of their story before the book concluded. Overall, I was thoroughly pleased with The Discovery and am glad to have discovered a phenomenal new-to-me author in Dan Walsh (pun intended!)! [4 stars]

This is a unique book. It’s a book within a book. Dan Walsh has yet to disappoint me. I really enjoyed this book.
A lot of the action in this story takes place in my old stomping ground - Daytona Beach. Even though a lot of it takes place in 1942-1945, I recognized many of the places.
Knowing the location of a book personally helps draw me into the story a little more. Even if the setting was a place unknown to me, this book would have grabbed my attention right away.
Dan Walsh can do that. He just sucked me right into the story immediately. I read this in one setting and didn’t want it to end. I want to know more about Michael and Jenn’s story. Did he ever make the big time?

Have You ever read a book that is absolutely phenomenal but when you go to describe it to someone, you fail miserably? Well, for me, The Discovery is one of those books! I could tell you it's full of Suspense! I could share with you about Michael and his Grandfather, who was an author. He was one of the BEST Authors ever, and yet no one knew anything about his personal life AT ALL! I could tell you about the unpublished manuscript that Michaels Grandfather wrote and that Michael found it! Was it left specifically for Michael to find? Will it change Michaels life?
I could tell you what a fantastic job Dan Walsh did in sharing the history and story involving WWII, and how I would recommend this book EVEN IF you aren't a WWII fan. YES, IT'S THAT GOOD!!
I could tell you that you just might feel like you are a part of this story and just might find yourself reading the book all the way through, simply because it is IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT DOWN! It wouldn't be fair to share all of this with you and not tell about the beautiful Love Story and the sacrifices people make for those they love.
Yes, I could tell you all of these things...But Honestly, I feel the most important thing I can say to you is -

If you are looking to read an intriguing book, The Dicovery by Dan Walsh is one to read. This is a sentimental love story, fictional of course, but sweet with a hint of espionage and the lies that often come with being a spy.
I have to admit that I read all the portions written by the main character's grandson first before I delved into "the discovery". Not something I usually do, but for me it set the tone for the whole book.
Most of these books that I have been reviewing are not overtly preachy by any means. The Discovery is another novel that brings the main character back to God through life's hardships. Most hardships people can relate to, however, the details of "Ben's" story are hardly normal by any means.
I liked the sacrificial love Ben showed, as well as the lasting love and devotion of a couple in their eighties. I also liked the fact that when the grandfather knew he was dying he spoke to each member of his family about the terms of the will and what to expect; thus eliminating any money wars you often read about or see in the movies!
While the story was a bit surreal at times, it had all the elements of a good book and made me cry too. Two thumbs up from me.

Recently, I read a thread of online posts questioning whether females would hesitate to read a book by a male if it included a love story. Well, if you have any doubts about whether a man can write a good love story . . . check out Dan Walsh's The Discovery.
Michael Warner wants to be a writer but doesn't think he has a chance of living up to the reputation of his late grandfather. When the will is read, Michael finds that he has inherited his grandfather's home and more money than he dreamed possible. He and his wife Jenn now have the money to quit their jobs and do pretty much what they want with their lives. For Michael, that includes the time to work on his dream of writing his first novel.
As Michael begins to settle into his new life, he finds that his grandfather has left a treasure specifically intended for him. In the box his grandfather used for storing his old typewriter, Michael finds an unpublished manuscript. The story, set in the time period of World War II, includes danger, intrigue . . . and a tale of a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. Before he finishes reading the book, Michael discovers why this is the most special of all his grandfather's writings.
This is the second book I've read by Dan Walsh, and I now have three others ordered. His stories are rich and draw me in from the very beginning. His characters have real depth to them, and it is easy to become involved in their lives. One of the neat things about this book was getting a story within a story. And it was interesting to learn some of facts about the German operations that were woven into the fictitious account. I look forward to reading more of Walsh's work.

Friends, I could not put this book down! Dan Walsh ROCKS!! This is one of those books that grabs you at the first page and it doesn't release you until long after the last page has closed. His writing style is rich and vibrant.
Family secrets are alive and about to be uncovered. Love is growing and lives are changing in this remarkable read. The setting is breathtaking. It's as though your walking the steps into the estate of Michael's grandfather. A man, everyone thought they knew, but there is so much more that is untold.
Oh, how cool to have a grandfather that leaves behind something just for your eyes? A grandfather that has thread the passion of writing to his grandson.
I love the story within the story. A story of grace and sacrifice. A legacy of love to be left behind for all who search for more.

In his latest book The Discovery, Dan Walsh has tackled a new challenge -- writing a story that combines contemporary and World War II. I love how this book plays on literary themes but is so much more. What would it be like to have your life suddenly changed by a lavish inheritance? What would it be like to have the opportunity to make your dreams come true? What would you give to make that happen?
Michael wrestles with these issues as he reads his grandfather's final book -- an unpublished one left for him to find. Does it contain the answer to the questions no one can answer? Or is it just another novel from an award-winning thriller writer?
This book continues Dan's engaging style and is smooth read that tugs at heart strings in a manner reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks. While I would have loved more time seeing Michael's story develop, Dan did a nice job balancing the two story-lines and time periods. I personally really enjoy stories like this. If you haven't tried Dan's books yet, this is a great place to start.

I purchased and read a Christmas book written by Dan Walsh this past year and loved it. I loved it so much, that when the opportunity came up to review his latest book 'The Discovery' I could NOT pass it up. The new book did not disappoint! In this book, the protagonist (Michael Warner) is an aspiring novelist who has inherited the grand estate of his beloved grandfather - a grandfather who was also a writer, and whose work sold in the millions - but no one ever knew anything about his personal life; not even his family. When Michael finds an unpublished manuscript in his grandfather's house, he is tempted to succumb to the pressures of his late grandfather's agent and get it published ... but that's before he decides to read it. What he reads will change his life forever.
Full of suspense and intrigue, this book is also about sacrifice and the limits of what you will do for those you love. Dan Walsh has successfully taken a little known factoid from the WWII era and woven it into a beautiful love story; with a main character everyone can relate to. I believe men and women alike will equally enjoy this story. It is extremely well done.

Another fresh twist

I have been drawn to Dan Walsh's writing because he seems to me like a Christian version of Nicholas Sparks. His writing doesn't shove the Gospel down your throat but it sure does weave itself into his story lines. I'm not sure that for me personally he will ever be able to top The Deepest Waters - that story blew me away. Now Dan brings a new story with a new twist. In The Discovery we have Michael, an aspiring author who's grandpa is a NYT bestselling author and when he passes away he leaves a mystery behind him for Michael to solve. A completed manuscript that he never had published... why? So this book follows part of the story in the present and part of the story in the manuscript that Grandpa Gerald left behind. It is an interesting scenario and makes for a good read. I look forward to seeing what Dan writes next, he always has a fresh take on the stories he weaves.

A suspense novel … by Dan Walsh? I couldn’t get my mind around it. So unlike his writing, until ... I read more. Until I was captivated, enthralled, with the story of an impossible love, a doomed life. A life pre-determined by the circumstances of war; a life that held value, but where no value could be found.
Walsh has such a unique gift of writing that he draws the reader into not only the story, but the era. I felt as if it was I who buried the body on the beach, I whose shaking hands held the lost manuscript. But, oh, how I wish it were I who inherited the fabulous mansion.
Walsh doesn’t soft-soap or mince words, nor does he proselytize. His characters aren’t preachy; they simply speak from their minds and hearts like you and me; their thoughts may wander a bit like yours or mine or they may pop out of the blue.
The Discovery isn’t overburdened with scene descriptions. In fact, most are important, integral to the story; or stories, as the case may be, since there are actually two stories woven intricately together. I don’t remember ever reading a complete novel within a novel, but Walsh integrates the two masterfully.
When Michael discovers his famous novelist grandfather’s hidden manuscript, we aren’t just told about the effect it has on him, nor are we given only snippets of it. We read it with him, the complete novel. What a treat to read two books, one inserted in the other, with two separate heroes, Michael and Ben. We know who Michael is, but who is Ben? Why is his story so important?
Walsh crafts strong characters, with the exception of one. I was disappointed in Michael’s wife Jenn. She was lacking in personality, simply window dressing. Even his cousin, off-the-stage Marilyn, contributed more to the storyline than Jenn. However, Claire Richards and her intelligent father, Hugh, make strong character contributions, and they move the story along, sometimes supportively, other times provocatively. Another wonderful character is Father Flanagan, a sweet, dear, elderly priest filled with compassion for Ben. Father Flanagan brings just the right touch of color to a distressing situation. Finally, there is FBI Special Agent Victor Hammond, an anomaly. You will have to read the book to discover why.
The Discovery is two stories twined together, yet separate. It’s a keep you on the edge of your seat novel(s). Another keeper for your Walsh collection.

The Discovery is remarkably suspenseful and would appeal to men or women.
I would not have believed that any part of World War II history could be so absorbing. Walsh’s “What if” imagination has taken some very important, and sometimes gruesome, facts and spun a very personal story that I didn’t want to stop reading. I appreciate when I finish reading a novel and feel that I’ve learned something, I’ve been entertained, and I feel as though I’ve journeyed with the characters through their experiences. The Discovery provides all that and more. Read it. You won’t be disappointed.
An excellent resource for book clubs, or literary discussion groups.
