Very well-written, in-depth look at not only the Old Testament text in and of itself, but also the history, geography, and cultures of civilizations in the Near East. I had to use this book for an upper division religious studies class and I learned so much from this book. I do not, however, 100% agree with the documentary hypothesis, but it is still a good read.

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST BOOK! It was a required "textbook" for an Introduction to the Old Testament university class and I have continued to use it for further Old Testament study. Easy to read but concise and well-written. It sure got my interest piqued in learning more about the Old Testament and its background. I can't say enough good things about this book because it has changed my life!

This book is very concise in the way it goes about teaching it's point of view. This book is dogmatic at times, and far from evangelical. If you are on the liberal side of scholarship you'll love this reading, if you are on the conservative side you'll probablly consider this book heretical.
