Forsaken Dreams
By MaryLu Tyndall
Let me start by saying that I hate war and all it involves and the aftermath of it as well.. But this book, this novel amazed me!! It shows that no matter all the damage, no matter all the loss and no matter all the pain- life still goes on! There is still a chance to find love, peace, and happiness again.
Even though it is a romance between Blake and Eliza, MaryLu is showing the true healing in all of them starting with the preacher and through the whole crew.
Maybe many found Blake's and Eliza's relationship rocky, I found it realistic and totally romantic!!! It takes a lot of gutts and defenetly a miracle to slay all the "dragons" - prejudice, pride, defeat, revenge, and ect.
I really enjoyed reading this new novel by MaryLu and cant wait for the next in this series..
P.S. It starts with a storm, got me a little confused but dont worry if it confuses you - keep reading!!!
Disclaimer: I got a free copy of this book from Barbour Publishing through NetGalley.com in exchange for my honest opinion.

Love on the turbulent seas

Set in post-Civil War, Forsaken Dreams tells the story of a group of Confederates leaving the unrecognizable South for the unknown Brazil. Author MaryLu Tyndall intertwines the hopes, dreams, and fears of characters that are as much running away from their pasts as they are running towards a new life. A decorated and damaged Southern war hero Colonel Blake Wallace and a Southerner-by-birth Yankee-by-marriage Eliza Crawford stand at the centre of the story. The first book in the Escape to Paradise series takes readers on a sea voyage fraught with danger and an uncertain outcome.
The ups and downs within the story mirror the ship’s ride through heavy seas and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. It’s another great story full of love, laughter, and life from MaryLu Tyndall.

Have you ever done something you thought was unforgivable? Join the characters in MaryLu Tyndall’s newest novel “Forsaken Dreams” as they find out about new beginnings.
In this book, book 1 of the Escape to Paradise series, Mrs. Eliza Crawford, despised by the now defeated south and not accepted by the newly ruling north, ventures out with a group of southern colonists to a new land in Brazil. Accepted at first, then despised by the other colonists, she is faced with persecution. Can she weather the storms on board the New Hope and find peace in God?
Colonel Blake Wallace is leading this rag-tag group of colonists to Brazil. He is sought by the ruling north and ready to make a fresh start in a new land. But will his hatred for the north and all those associated, keep him from all that God has in store for him?
This book was one of MaryLu’s best yet! I could hardly put it down!! If you are looking for a book that has romance, adventure, deception, forgiveness, storms, and beautiful beaches, look no further. MaryLu’s use of words transported me onto the deck of the New Hope and into the lives of it’s passengers. I felt myself cheering for the heroine and booing at the “villan”. I could almost feel the salty spray of the ocean and the warm sand between my toes.
So if you are looking for a great read, don’t miss out on “Forsaken Dreams”.

Forsaken Dreams the first book in the Escape to Paradiese Series by MaryLu Tyndall is a book that has it all. It gave me a look at the mindsets of the people from the north and south and how they related to one another after the war was over. The families that were affected by the Civil War were not soon to forgive. Forsaken Dreams is a book that allows us to see God working in the characters lives as He causes them to be more forgiving of others. We plainly see that it is the internal character that matters and not the external. The book also gives us a look at the spiritual warfare that abounds on the ship and the strong faith of those who recognize it. I give Forsaken Dreams 5 out of 5 stars.
I received this book from Net Galley and Barbour Publishing for my honest review. I was not paid in any way for this review.

My first word for this review is “WOW!” I had already read some of MaryLu Tyndall's pirate stories and enjoyed them but this book was different. Not just a different time period and location but a different flavor to the story itself, one I really liked.
Forsaken Dreams isn't the usual historical novel, no, this one has a little suspense, and a definite supernatural element. Before you start thinking that it is some weird paranormal story in hoopskirts, I will tell you it isn't. MaryLu Tyndall tells the truth, there really were and still are situations where very strange and inexplicable things happen that can only be stopped by fasting and prayer.
OK, so I have mentioned the supernatural element BUT this book really IS a historical novel. The story takes place not long after the Civil War is over, hatred and fear is still running high on both sides. The story is from the viewpoint of the Southerners that had just lost literally everything. No, slavery is not condoned but it is spoken of as a past and then current fact. There were Southerners on both sides of the slavery issue and that is clearly shown in this book. That brings up one thing I sincerely loved about this book, MaryLu did not try to insert modern ideas into her historical character's heads. This book is full of historical detail, not drowning in it, but the right balance for a reader to enjoy.
To me, a brief summary of this book would be; Forgiveness and Love can mean the world to someone, and to just about all of us, no matter what we have done or endured.
So in the end what you get is a very well written book with the 4-E's. Engaging, Engrossing, Entertaining, Enjoyable. OK, so Eliza was a little TOO good sometimes but that didn't make Forsaken Dreams any less of a wonderful read. Can't wait for the release of the next book in this series, Elusive Hope!

Forsaken Dreams by MaryLu Tyndall is a unique and engaging story. Characterization is exceptional. Lots of characters and subplots to engage the reader. Love that!
Whodathunkit that Southerners headed to Brazil after the Civil War? Great premise for a story, based on facts. Although much of the story takes place aboard ship it doesn’t feel like one is adrift in the story.
Eliza (love that name as it was my grandmother’s!) was a southerner who married a Yankee general when she was very young. Blake is an injured Confederate colonel whose unforgiveness threatens to destroy him, his faith, and his chance for love.
Get the paperback--the cover is stunning!!! The print is good, too.

Absolutely fantastic!! Forsaken Dreams is a past-paced historical romance set on the high seas. The hero and heroine are electric and their relationship sizzles, even though it has as many ups and downs as a ship on a tumultuous ocean. The secondary cast adds drama, suspense, and even a sinister element. Nail-biting tension to exquisitely portrayed settings, family tragedies to an hard-won, endearing romance that will stay with you for a long while, this book has it all. You're cheating yourself out of a superb read if you don't pick up a copy of MaryLu Tyndall's Forsaken Dreams.

She grabs you with the very first sentence then leaves you on the edge of your seat in the first chapter with the knowledge that there are rough seas ahead, both literally and figuratively. Besides the white knuckled, heart racing story, she keeps you entranced with stimulating writing. “He winked above a grin that revealed a jagged row of gray teeth. “ “His body odor alone threatened to stir her breakfast into disorder.” I almost lost mine at the imagery of that alone. Their first glance of Brazil painted a beautiful picture in my mind. “Above, the sun flung glitter over the earth, turning the sea into silvery ribbons and the distant land into shimmering emeralds.”
Who hasn’t dreamed of sailing off on an adventure to an island paradise, but, was it to run away from a secret past or a war torn country? Eliza just wanted to start fresh, where nobody would know her history. Colonel Blake just wanted to escape the memories of death, destruction, and those looking for him. I’m sure none of the passengers on the voyage to Brazil ever dreamed of the trials and dangers that occurred during the trip. Would they even survive and make it to their destination? Will Eliza’s secret keep them apart?
We all like to think of enemies as physical human beings who you can see or touch. MaryLu reminds us, with phenomenal writing, that there is more out there to be prepared for. I loved the thought provoking storyline and details she writes about. This is thankfully not a fluffy nonsense romance story. I appreciate that MaryLu gives us more to think about!
Secretly, the best part of the whole book is knowing there are more to come in this series! I can’t wait to hear the stories of the special passengers that sailed with Eliza and Blake.

MaryLu’s books are the perfect balance of adventure, romance, humor, and drama set in a piece of history. She has not failed to draw me into a book. One thing I enjoy in each book is the characters the readers can relate to. In Forsaken Dreams Eliza is on the run, but just like Jonah, she can’t outrun God. God continues to remind Eliza, and the others on the same voyage, of His presence. She comes to a crossroad. Will she hold onto the bitterness and hurt in her life, or will she take the path of forgiveness, accept God’s gift of grace, and then share that grace with others? Similarly the others on the voyage have set off for Brazil, in anticipation of a fresh start, leaving their pasts behind. However they seem to be fighting the fact that God loves them too much to let them forget their pasts. It’s a reminder to the reader that just like Eliza we can’t move forward without God. It’s a great book, enjoy!

A tale of romance, intrigue and God’s truth on the high seas.
The story has a hint of the “Lord of the Flies” simply because our characters are heading for a Utopian promise only to collide against everything *they* believe should be right. But the similarities end there.
The story captured me within the first chapter. It flipped between past and present and I loved the retrospective style of the chapter crafting. It was always very clear which present I was in, but it gave a delightful flavor to the novel that worked so well.
Since the very beginning of Tyndall’s career she has set her books on the seas. Her most recent releases though have been landlubbers, and I have to say it’s great to be back on the open sea. It’s the only way you’re going to get me out there, so as I sailed around the coast with the crew of characters I was taken into a completely different time and place.
Our characters have to come to a new faith and every moment of their journey felt nothing but authentic. The romance was sweet and enticed me to return to the pages over and over again.
A captivating story. Characters that grip your heart to an ending that simply made me sigh in delight. It’s that kind of historical novel that will only get better with subsequent readings. And left opened just enough to have this reader chomping for book #2!
This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the author for my copy to review.

If there is one thing MaryLu Tyndall knows how to do, its create an exciting adventure, and write an emotional romance; all while painting a beautiful picture of God's grace and forgiveness.
Set sail from post Civil War America aboard the New Hope bound for Brazil! Thats just what this colorful cast full of characters is looking for, new hope and a new life where they can leave their past behind, and create their own utopian society. Along the way there are many hardships and trials and some even fear they would be better off back in America living under the thumb of the north.
Eliza Crawford holds a secret, one that would destroy her plans for a new life in Brazil if this firey group of Southerners found out. Colonel Blake Wallace is troubled by memories of war and nightmares of his brothers death. The couple share a romance so sweet until Eliza's secret is revealed by the one person aboard the ship who knew Eliza before the war. Beautifully written this story will tugg at your heart strings, and you'll find yourself rooting for each character. If you are looking for a story with romance, adventure, and heart look no further! Forsaken Dreams is the you book you want to read!

Story about a Different Group of Pioneers

Forsaken Dreams tells the story of a miscellany of people who have decided to flee the defeated South after the Civil War. Instead of heading west, as so many did, this is an account about the people who decided to start their lives over in Brazil. Their stories are varied; widowed Eliza Crawford had committed the “folly” of marrying a general in the Northern army; while Colonel Blake Wallace is burdened by the loss of his entire family, as well as the war; others include a con man, a treasure-seeker, freed slaves, and more.
I was unfamiliar with this particular piece of history, and was looking forward to reading the story. Unfortunately, I just could not get into this book. For those who love to read history, it’s probably very close to truth, but I read for pleasure and relaxation as well as enjoying history, and I found the events rather sad. Dangers at sea, enemies within the group, sadness of heart…all combined to make this a less than happy read.
I appreciate all the work and research that Ms. Tyndall put into this story. Perhaps as the series continues, thing will get better in the lives of these brave pioneers.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.

‘Forsaken Dreams’ is one of Tyndall’s best novels yet! I’ve always been a big fan of hers and she hasn’t disappointed with her latest novel. Eliza is young civil war widow whose deepest desire is to be rid of her shameful past. When she hears of voyage taking Southerners to Brazil to start a colony there, she jumps at the chance. Blake fought in the civil war, but can’t seem to quite get past the fact that he is the lone survivor of his whole family. He arranged the journey to Brazil in an attempt to forget the memories of his life before the war. But, when their secrets get out into the open and strange, unexplainable things begin to happen on board the ship, will Eliza, Blake, and the rest of the party going to Brazil be able to make it, or will they die trying? This book is definitely one of Tyndall’s best yet. She weaves an amazing tale of hope, fear, love, and faith in ‘Forsaken Dreams’ that you are not going to want to miss! I would recommend this book for everyone ages 14 and up.

As a fan of MaryLu Tyndall's work, I'm excited to report that this first book in her new series is promising and intriguing! Forsaken Dreams takes place mostly on the sea (Tyndall's setting specialty!), and there are plenty of dangers - both internal and external - to keep the plot interesting. The characters are varied, like well-fitted puzzle pieces that come together to form a fascinating blend of romance, opposition, challenge, and growth.
The beginning of the book was a bit off-putting, as it jumped around in time and made the introduction to the story a little rough. (I can see why it might have been done that way, as it emphasized the "Jonah" theme, started off with some excitement, gave some important back story, etc. However, I think the damage to the flow of the story outweighed the potential benefits. If it was just the one "jump" scene with Hayden, I think that would have been fine, but the first chapter "jump" didn't work for me.)
Once the story catches up to where the first chapter left off, though, the adventure continues on uninterrupted. The middle of the story is full of interesting interactions and insights, as well as one crisis after another.
The ending is good, but it isn't as epic and satisfying as the endings to some of Tyndall's other novels. The one thing about this series is that the nature of the overall plot makes it difficult to enjoy this first installment as a stand-alone. A cliffhanger (of sorts) is certainly acceptable, especially as it makes me eager to continue the journey through the eyes of Hayden and Magnolia in the next book, Elusive Hope! But I wished for a little more excitement to this (current) conclusion to Blake and Eliza's story.
All in all, though, Forsaken Dreams is a great beginning to the "Escape to Paradise" series, as it introduces a great new cast of characters and demonstrates the need to forgive and be forgiven, to understand and to appreciate. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this series continues!
*With thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion.*

I very much enjoyed this book! It has a great setting of directly after the Civil War. I have never read much about this time period so it was very enlightening. Great story of forgiveness and love. I also liked the hero and heroine, great characters and I am rather picky about that. I would definitely recommend this to add to your reading list!

Wow! I was blown away by this story of MaryLu Tyndall. The Civil War was a dark time in our history and I loved that Ms Tyndall expounded on what a small group of southerns chose to do. Start a new life in a new world--Brazil. A history lesson I never learned in school. It was not your cookie cutter romance. She filled the story with wonderful secondary characters that you learned to love, hate, and distrust. The conflict between hero and heroine sizzled and kept you turning the page hoping they could some how overcome insurmountable odds. Her hero had some major flaws both physical and mental that made him real and so easy to relate to. It was such a nice change to see some real issues that a character had to work through. She did a wonderful job taking the hero through the steps he needed to take in order to come to true healing. I tire of stories where some devastating thing has to happen every time to make a character overcome an obstacle. That isn't realistic. Granted sometimes in life we do, but more often than not God speaks to us through the smaller things in life, which Ms. Tyndall did beautifully.I loved the heroine as well as the hero of this story. Ms Tyndall's takes you from the storms on the high sea to the beautiful shores of Brazil and gives breathtaking descriptions putting you right in the setting. I can't recommend this story enough especially if you are tired of being able to out guess a story. This one will keep you guessing all the way through the last page.

Forsaken Dreams – author MaryLu Tyndale
MaryLu has done it again! If you’ve read any of her other series like Legacy of the King’s Pirates, Charles Towne Belles, or the Surrender to Destiny series you will know exactly what I mean. Forsaken Dreams is Book 1 of another exciting series, Escape to Paradise.
The heart-tugging story of Widow Eliza Crawford and decorated, war weary southern Colonel Blake Wallace begins somewhere in the Caribbean in May, 1866, just after the Union won the Civil War. We find Eliza on Blake’s ship, the New Hope, along with a cast of interesting characters, colonists-to-be, all preferring a new life in Brazil versus life in Charleston under the Yankee yoke.
Eliza and Blake are attracted to one another from the start. But both harbor secrets and painful pasts they want to forget and which threaten any dreams of a new beginning.
Eliza has been rejected by her southern family because she married a Yankee officer and by his family because she was southern. The only peace she found was serving as a nurse on the bloody field of battle. Since the war, and the death of her husband, she has suffered great distress and ostracism. She dreams of a new life in Brazil where no one will know her sad past. But one person on board remembers who she is and who she married.
Blake suffers from war nightmares and the loss of his entire family to Union soldiers’ cruelty, something he will never forget or forgive. Wanted by the Union for supposed war crimes, he organized the expedition to Brazil, and longs for a new life far from the horrors of war.
The two seem to be finding new love until a foolish, drunken young woman reveals to the shipmates Eliza’s marriage to a Union soldier. Then hatred like Eliza has seldom experienced breaks upon her, even Blake’s attitude toward her changes immediately.
The emotional wars Eliza and Blake both battle are further complicated by many troubles, hardships and even demonic attacks at sea. Will they survive and be able to forgive and love again? You are kept on the edge of your seat as wave after wave of challenges, interspersed with tender romantic interludes, separate them again and again.
In addition to the central story of Eliza and Blake, the other colorful characters have their own stories the reader wants to hear more about. This is a crew with a medley of their own problems to solve, not so different from human troubles in any age. I look forward to MORE in this Escape to Paradise series.
Besides an engrossing read, MaryLu’s creative writing gifts are so evident in Forsaken Dreams. Once again she proves her skills with deep point of view, endearing characters, emotional description, and movie-scene plotting that keeps you glued to the pages.
And like icing on the cake, by the end of Forsaken Dreams, you’re left with the warmth of the powerful spiritual messages of forgiveness and how active love and servant hood wins out over the hardest hearts. These two are woven throughout the story and renew your faith in God and man. And it may even prod you to pursue again your own Forsaken Dreams. Get the book! You’ll be glad you did.

Marylu Tyndall has again created a compelling, sweeping story of mystery and romance onboard a historical seafaring adventure, in her newest release Forsaken Dreams. Set in the months after the end of the Civil War, Marylu has spun the tale of Colonel Blake Wallace and Eliza Crawford, both Southerners aboard New Hope, a ship bound for the beautiful shores of Brazil. Both Blake and Eliza are harboring their own secrets and pains, and each are hoping for a fresh start in Brazil, but their journey across the sea is wrought with dangers from both the sea and those aboard the ship. Will they be able to find the love they both long for?
This is one adventure you won't want to miss. I became lost within it's pages enchanted with Marylu's story of hope and courage. I cannot wait for the next book in this series to come along!

One of my favorite novels by Mary Lu Tyndall! You're right, I'm not a romance reader so why do I read Tyndall's novels? I love the way she weaves in spiritual warfare and allows her characters to be real people with real and difficult problems. Forsaken Dreams didn't disappoint. It's full of spine tingling warfare, baffling twists of plot and of course romance.
A novel set after the Civil War, Forsaken Dreams is the story of Colonel Blake Wallace, widow Eliza Crawford and a group of other Southerners hoping for a fresh start in the paradise of Brazil. But they've all got secrets and the past threatens to capsize their journey.

I really enjoyed this book. I have been a big fan of MaryLu Tyndall for a long time so I was eagerly awaiting this book to be released. Once again, she does not disappoint. To be honest, prior to reading this book I had never heard about southerners after the civil war heading to Brazil to start a new life. I found the book quite intriguing. History came alive for me. I could picture what it felt like traveling on a ship heading somewhere where I had never been before. Add in romance, of course, and a lot of suspense and it is a GREAT book. I give Forsaken Dreams FIVE STARS! But, don't stop there. Read all of her books. I highly recommend them all!
