My daughters (middle school/elementary grades) and I love the three books so far of Max & Liz! I bought the first one, "The Ark..." for my oldest because she loves all things animals. From then on, she was hooked. These books make the Bible stories so much more alive. With the truth and fiction so intertwined, I've had to make sure the girls don't think it's all truth. Reading Jenny Cote's comments at the end of each book are a major help! We've given these books as gifts; and many friends have borrowed our copies as well. MY favorite is "The Prophet..." because it connected the Old and New Testaments so wonderfully. I read Isaiah and Daniel afterwards because of this book. I read this last book 30 minutes each night with the girls and they kept begging for more. For our purposes, I liked that this book's chapters were shorter overall and hanging endings. We can't wait for Jenny's next book!!

The Prophet, The Shepherd, and the Star takes its reader on a 700 year journey with animal friends Max a Scottish terrier, his mate Kate, a west highland terrier, Liz a sleek black cat from France, her mate Al, an orange tabby from Ireland and Nigel a white mouse from England. God asks the friends to stay with Isaiah and learn all they can about the coming Messiah form Isaiah's prophecies. They help thwart the Assyrians attack on Jerusalem and watch and help as Isaiah struggles with the knowledge that God is giving him.

When Jerusalem is captured by Babylon troops, the five friends are assigned to look after Daniel. They watch in wonder as Daniel and his friends are tested by the fiery furnace and a den of lions. They get to meet God's messenger Gabriel and listen as he gives Daniel prophecies regarding mankind's future. Their final mission is to help Mary and Joseph with their journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus the Messiah.

As with all her other books, this author manages to weave together a magnificent story that takes the reader back in time and brings history to life. Although this book is written for ages 8-14, it written well enough to hold the attention of readers of all ages.

Following The Amazing Tales of Max and Liz, The first book in the Epic Order of the Seven series begins with The Prophet, the Shepherd and the Star. Bringing you into the times of prophets like Isaiah and Daniel, to the time of Christ's birth. You get to experience the prophesies that were written hundreds of years before the coming of the Messiah. You witness Israel during the reign of King Hezekiah and the Assyrians attack, Babylon conquered by the Medes and Persians, Jerusalem during the time of the Romans. You visit with the shepherds who were first told of the coming of the King, with Joseph and Mary as they live in Nazareth and Bethlehem, and you join the magi as they travel over the desert to see the newborn King, the promised Messiah.

Max, Liz, Kate, Al, and Nigel all come back for an exciting adventure, helping God's chosen one's to succeed, and to keep the enemy from destroying everything. Join them as they live a one of a kind adventure!

...When the enemy is right behind them, will they be able to stop his evil plan?

(It's really hard for me to write reviews for the books in this series, as they are so wonderful, and hard to describe.) :)

Jenny L. Cote has done an excellent job bringing the Biblical time to life, while adding fun characters and facts throughout the book.

I've read this book over and over again, and I never grow tired of reading this authoress' writings. Adding facts, fiction, and imagination leave this book a masterpiece. You find out about the different discoveries people made back then, from shapes and math to astrology. It is amazing reading about the different prophesies Christ fulfilled during His time here on earth just in His birth. The Prophet, the Shepherd, and the Star is definitely a must read.

Overall I would rate this book 10 out of 10 stars.

The Prophet, the Shepherd, and the Star

"I am no stranger to Jenny Cote's books. I have been on adventures with Max and Liz before, and I knew Jenny's new book, The Prophet, the Shepherd and the Star, was going to be another fantastic adventure. Jenny's books feature Max and Liz, a Scottish Terrier and a black cat, along with a cast of entertaining animal companions who live out actual stories from the Bible with amazing accuracy. The Prophet, the Shepherd and the Star starts out where the last book, The Dreamer, the Schemer, and the Robe left off: telling the nativity story.

Even though this book is intended for juvenile readers, the big kid in me can't help but love this book and the other books in this series. I found myself laughing out loud and learning as the familiar story of the nativity is told in a wonderful and entertaining way. It was so nice to see some of my favorite animal characters from previous stories, and I was delighted to meet the new characters. Jenny writes with a terrific humor that keeps kids and adults laughing and entertained.

I was not disappointed by any aspect of this book. It is a very long book, over five hundred pages, but it reads very fast and is very difficult to put down. I was actually happy the book was that long because I just didn't want it to end. Parents can feel very confident in giving their young ones this book to read, but they may want to read it first, because why should kids have all the fun? I loved every moment of this wonderful story. It is another winner by Jenny L. Cote!"
