As even Peter observed, Paul's letters ''contain some things that are hard to understand.'' Brauch tackles forty-eight of them, such as ''Hand this man over to Satan,'' and ''I do not permit a woman to teach.'' By supplying background information and by putting each passage in the context of the whole of Paul's teaching, Brauch helps you understand the importance of Paul's sayings for Christian life today. Paper, 216 pages, from InterVarsity.

I highly recommend Brauch's work as being accessible, scholarly, and helpful. The same material (with a few additional comments) has also been incorporated into the one-volume work called "Hard Sayings of the Bible." [The larger volume just mentioned, is co-authored with Kaiser, Davids, and Bruce.] Brauch is not as well known as these other three authors, but his contribution is certainly up to their standard – which is saying quite a bit.
