Customer Reviews for Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Phantastes,

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Phantastes,

This is the story of the narrator's adventures in fairyland, where he confronts tree-spirits, sojourns to the palace of the fairy queen. A book of unparalled charm and creativity that C.S. Lewis said baptized his imagination.

This book is fair as far as its specific genre goes: that of fairy tale. It is a big mistake to pick up expecting a full color tale with detailed plot and developement. It is what I call "Bizarre phantasy" It is a great read however in the context of pure fairy tale in which any number of things are possible and none of them surprising. Subtle lessons are interwoven into the story if you can pick them out. Makes a leisurely reading.

I was lead to read "Phantastes" by C.S. Lewis' remarks on it in a biography I had read about C.S. Lewis. I have to admit it was difficult to get through, and I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped to. It is a trip through "fairy land", with a lot of aimless wandering. The overall spiritual meaning is good, but the book seems to wander you through a land for much too long before the spiritual meaning starts to appear. I have started reading "The Princess and The Goblin" by MacDonald and so far it is much easier to read and much more entertaining.
