My Thoughts on this book:
Daniel was homeless. He lived in the alleys and back ways of Bethlehem. The only thing he could call his own was a ring on a piece of twine he wore around his neck that his mother gave him before she passed away. One night he found a warm place to sleep in a stable and was awaken when he heard something, sounding like someone in pain, then later he heard a baby cry. As Daniel watched through the cracks of wood to see what was going on, he felt bad about spying. But as he watched this wonderful event in this young family’s life, he decided he wanted to give this baby something, but the only thing he had was his ring. He couldn’t give up the only thing he had to remember his mom, could he?
And I don’t want to give any more of the story away because this is a book that will warm your heart as you think about Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus on that night so long ago in Bethlehem. The author tells the story in a unique way, through the eyes of a homeless boy.
Often during the Christmas Holiday’s I wonder what it was like for people living during the time Jesus was born. Reading this story gave me a glimpse of what it may have been like for a young lad. But it doesn’t stop there. Mr. Burbidge carries the story all the way to the cross, and the unconditional love and hope of redemption through Christ. This is a story you can keep telling your children and grandchildren over and over each year as we celebrate the birth of Jesus.
The illustrations in this book by Annie Henrie are totally awesome. The characters are created to give you the feel of what it may have been like in Bethlehem at that time in history. The colors are well blended and subdued, creating a soft warm feeling. The book is beautiful inside and out, with the unique and incredible illustrations and wonderful words written on the pages drawing you into the very feelings and emotions of that Bethlehem night in a stable.
What else can I say but to encourage you to go out and purchase a copy of this book for your Library? Even though this is written for the younger generation in mind, this will touch the hearts of all ages.
