Alpha Omega Publications Horizons Math, Grade 3, Complete Set

No more hours of boring, endless repetition - your kids will actually thank you for this interactive math curriculum! Each level has two student workbooks, but the teacher handbook is the main component of the program. All instruction is provided through one-on-one teacher instruction, which is the biggest difference between Horizons and the self-guided Lifepacs.Another big focus in Horizons is hands-on learning using a variety of manipulatives, which can mostly be found around the house: pencils, pipe cleaners, play or real money, thread, a timer, clock, yardstick, etc.Novice home-educators should not be intimidated by the amount of teacher involvement as it is carefully layed out in the beginning of each year's teacher handbook. The teacher handbook also provides a variety of teaching suggestions and supplemental activities for additional practice.

The concepts covered in Horizons 3 include:

  • Multiplication up to four digits
  • Division with 2 digit divisors with remainders
  • Algebraic equations introduced. 176, 178 pages student softcover. 352, 346 teachers guides; spiral-bound reduced student pages.

I am preparing for our new homeschool year. This is our 4th year using Horizons Math. I've always enjoyed Horizons spiral approach so that the material that is learned never seems to be forgotten throughout the year. Because of this, I was a little shocked that book 1 begins with a great deal of review. I know that some things can be forgotten over the summer and a review may be needed, but I think that there is a bit too much. At any rate we may pick up the pace if we do not need the review. I still love this curriculum and would never think of using anything else.

My second year using Horizons. My daughter has flourished under this curriculum. I love how the curriculum repeats what was previously learned.

I love the fact there is no repetition and the kids can work at their own pace with me as a guide right along side.

My daughter loved the colorful pages in the workbook and actually looked forward to the next lesson. It seems to move quickly from one topic to the next which is great for some kids but not so great for others. The one thing I didn't like was that the Teachers text isn''t set up to show you step by step how to do the new topic that is taught.

This is an excellent math program. I have used it all along for my oldest son and my youngest son is just starting out w/ K. I have never even been tempted to switch. The material is excellent and your child will cover a lot of ground, with enough practice for each skill learned on each page so that not only will your child grasp the skill, it will really cement into his mind. The only complaint I have is about the teacher manuals. I have issues with whoever thought up the layout for those. There are 2 volumes and they really should be spiral bound all in one book. No good reason to separate them. The main gripe I have with this math program in general is that you will be left high and dry frequently while teaching from the TM. All kinds of flashcards, etc. will be called for, and unless you read way ahead and purchase accordingly, you will be scrambling around a lot. VERY frustrating. The flascards should be included with the TM, where you can just copy them and cut them out, and be ready. The wording in the TM doesn't always make logical sense. Also be aware that the separate worksheet packet you can buy is NOT the same as the worksheets in TM book 2. So don't think you'll be saving yourself any headaches by buying that package. You'll still have to lug your book to the copier and copy the worksheets. Unless you do as I did, which is pull the binding completely off the book and tear the worksheets out one by one, and put them in a three-ring binder. I am slowly pulling the binding off all the books and separating the pages to put into a binder, but really for the price I paid for this program, I should not have to do that. So, yes...buy this program for its content, and call or email Alpha Omega to complain, complain, complain about the TMs...maybe they will change them for the better.

Wonderful. Colorful and engaging. Really holds my son's interest. It is helping us to slowly undo the damage done by using Saxon Math 3 last year. Best advice I can give you is to order the separate worksheet packet that goes with this grade level. Otherwise you will have to deal with taking your TM to get copies made of the last 80 or so pages. What a pain. They should include the worksheet packet in with the complete set, but oh well. Also, I am using this with my 4th grade son, even though it has the big 3 on it. This math program is advanced by one grade level. Fortunately the grade level is not imprinted on each worksheet page so your child never has to know. We both love it and plan to stick with it until he is ready to move on to Teaching Textbooks for the more advanced math. TMs needs major improvement. They are paperback and hard to work with.

My daughter has done pretty well in this program. We used Saxon for 2nd grade and she really struggled. I figured out she is a visual person and the black and white pages just weren't holding her interest. The only problem I have with this program is the teachers book. They really do not thoroughly explain the teaching process for each day the way Saxon did. Still, for the visual child, this program is very good.

We have used Horizons Math for two years and love love love it. My children do not even realise they are learning new concepts and building on their knowledge..they just do the work quickly and easily. The color illustrations do not distract, but aid in keeping math from being boring. Horizons is the only math we will use! Concept after concept is learned until they are doing upper math without even knowing it. I wish all math had been taught this way!

The children enjoy the colourful workbooks. I think the workbooks would be a sufficient curriculum if the teacher is confident and able to do math drills, games and other reinforcements on his or her own.I like that the set contains answer keys and additional drills. The lessons outlined are closely aligned with the workbook pages (see why I said the teachers' manual isn't needed by experienced teachers?), but also contain ideas for drills and practice. The single thing I don't like about this curriculum is that the teachers' manual comes in two workbook-like texts. I'd prefer to have ONE text with a harder cover, and the answer keys to the lesson presented on that day in with the teaching materials. It just takes time for me to get the other book out and flip through for the information I need. The math is presented in a SPIRAL curriculum, which is helpful to us in that we revisit concepts frequently.
