Hartley is a respected and talented conservative scholar. His commentary on Genesis is extremely accessible. It is an easy read that is based upon solid scholarship. It seeks to explain the meanings of an ancient text to modern readers. He presents Genesis as both a spiritual and literary work. The theological comments are also quite helpful. He respects the ancient contents of the book and treats its historical claims with respect. Other commentaries are more helpful in digging into the many disputed issues within the Book of Genesis. Also, others more fully discuss linguistic concerns. But Hartley succeeds in doing what he set out to with this work. For that, he is to be highly commended.
