Hendrickson Publishers The Early Church Fathers, 38 Volumes
Broken into three sections, this authoritative collection of writings by the Early Church Fathers is essential for understanding patristic thought. Series I of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers consists of eight volumes of the writings of St. Augustine, the greatest and most influential of the early Fathers, as well as six volumes of the treatises and homilies of St. Chrysostom. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers Series II contains in fourteen volumes the works of the Greek Fathers from Eusebius to John of Damascus and the Latin Fathers from Hilary to Gregory the Great. The Ante-Nicene Fathers represent the first primary sources of Christian history following the canon of the New Testament, and include writings from the Apostolic Fathers as well as various third and fourth century sources.

I don't know how CBD does it. This is an incredible set of books and it is offered an an unbeliveable price. The translations are very accessible and the scholarship seems very sound. Thanks, CBD!

I couldn't pass up this deal and I am elated now having received them in the mail. Quality is outstanding. No more having to read what other scholars say about the church fathers. Now they are accessible in their own words, at my own leisure and pace.

I ordered this set on backorder in October knowing that it would not be released until April. I received them today and must say that I am not dissappointed with my order or wait at all. The quality of the set is excellent from the covers, binding, and paper thickness to the print font and quality. I have glanced through all 38 books and only found 1 smudged character. The information that is packed into this set is increadible. The font seems easy to read. If you are interested in studing the early church fathers and the early church this is a great set to add to your library. I can't wait to start using them in my small groups and bible study.

The quality of the books is excellent if presentation is important. The scope and readability is just an awesome and pure fountain of nectar for the serious talmid of foundational doctrinal and devotional manna. For the non-Christian pilgrim or researcher, you will find frank and startingly honest insight into the genesis of Christianity, far from the prejudiced rhetoric of modern media.

If I had to pay the full retail price it would be worth it. It gives the reader a better picture of church history (primitive) and the introduction of various doctrines or teachings that developed over the course of it's history...It's nice to see that the early church baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins according to scriptures...there is so much more to this set that I don't have enough space to write them all. Buy it you will not be disappointed.

This is probably the most significant source of information to see for yourself what the early church taught after the New Testament. I recommend this especially for all theology students, pastors, and church libraries.

This is probably the most wonderful book set I've ever come across. Many of these volumes each contain several books which includes the story of Saint Anthony. When it first came and I had a good look at the set all I could do was sit on my couch and stare at it. I think I was in a state of shock. Then I dashed back to the site to see if it was still on sale and bought a second set for my bedroom. I am unglued it is so magnificent.

These books get a five star rating because of the unbeatable price! They are supprisingly nice for the price offered here on christianbook.com. A very useful reference for those who are interested in church history and development. If you have been considering a set of the church fathers... Look no further.

This is one of the best sets of Early Texts of the Christian Faith. The Very best being that Migne; however, due to the fact Migne's Set is much older Textually (Eusebius of LCL being better) as well as the fact the Price is too expensive--this set far excels that of Migne. The greatest asset this set offers is the Text of the Seven accepted Councils with their Cannons. If you are interested in what the Early Fathers actually wrote or you are a Scholar who doesn't want to waste his life learning Greek and Latin this is the Set for you!!!

This is an invaluable collection of the writings of the Early Fathers.As a student of historical theology of the Early Church, I am using these books again and again.It is one thing to use internet version, but there is nothing like reading and getting soaked into the hard copy.And it is very cheap!

This is an invaluable part of my library and it was a great blessing to find it at CBD's exceptionally low price. (I don't know how they can do it.) I used an electronic version of much of this material for many years, but bought Hendrickson's print version here two years ago and have not regretted the purchase. You can find better translations of individual works, but nowhere will you find a collection as comprehensive as this. The Fathers can be quirky at times and are often in disagreement, but they are critical in gaining an understanding of the regula fidei of the ancient and undivided Church. Much of the content is very helpful on the theological, apologetic, historical, and homiletic fronts. The index is very helpful in finding things by topic. I also find this series very helpful as I use it heavily in conjunction with IVP's Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, another excellent research, especially for preachers.

I have these on CD for computer, and you can look at them online; however there is nothing like this hard copy set. With all the claims flying about what the early Church believed, this is a must have set to know the truth. It is invaluable!

This is terrific. The translations are a little dry, but there is so much here at so low a price that it hardly weighs in on the matter. Want to know what Christianity has always believed? Read these. Want to know what the Early Church thought on something? Read it. In short, rather than read about what the Early Church thought on something, read the things they wrote. For that reason, this volume is indespensable to any Christian commited to learning about his faith.

I've searched all over the web for this set at a reasonable price and was able to get it here for $350, which comes out to less than $10 per volume. It's a steal for a brand new set. And I've already found it useful for a paper I was writing. While individually there are better translations out there of some of the authors in the set, the sheer comprehensiveness of this makes it a great investment.
