Banner of Truth The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment

Burroughs' writings, some published before and others after his death, were numerous but The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment is one of the most valuable of them all. Its author was much concerned to promote (1) peace among believers of various 'persuasions' (2) peace and contentment in the hearts of individual believers during what he describes as 'sad and sinking times'. The Rare Jewel concentrates upon this second aim. It is marked by sanity, clarity, aptness of illustration, and worth of appeal to the heart.

This book has been a challenge and encouragement to me personally, so much so that I purchased 5 more copies to share with friends and family. It needs to be read and reread slowly and carefully. My copy has many underlines and notations.

This little book puts the attainment of a contented life into practical and understandable terms. I enjoy reading it. It has helped me in my quest for contentment. I always wondered what was the "secret" that Paul had found in relation to being always contented no matter what his circumstances.

This is an amazing gem of a book. We are using it as a basis for teaching for an upcoming retreat and I find it to be an excellent resource for choosing to be content, and to live at peace with others whenever possible.

One of my favorite books. Would be good for every American Christian to read. Godliness with contentment is great gain.

This profound 350-year-old book is relevant for our modern culture that has everything and yet finds contentment elusive. Burroughs clearly defines the difference between the "comfortable" things and the "necessary" things, "The other things are pretty fine indeed, and I should be glad if God would give me them, a fine house, and income, and clothes, and advancement for my wife and children: these are comfortable things; I may have these and yet perish for ever, but the other is absolutely necessary. No matter how poor I am, I may have what is absolutely necessary: thus Christ instructs the soul." The book is filled with gold nuggets such as this. I only wish it was in hardback. Highly recommended.
