Customer Reviews for Westminster John Knox Press Genesis, Interpretation Commentary

Westminster John Knox Press Genesis, Interpretation Commentary

In this clear and readable style Walter Brueggemann presents Genesis as a single book set within the context of the whole of biblical revelation. He sees his task as bringing the text close to the faith and ministry of the church. He interprets Genesis as a proclamation of God's decisive dealing with creation rather than as history of myth. Brueggemann's impressive perspective illuminates the study of the first book of the Bible.

about 85% of this commentary I agree with - but feel that there are portions that dishonor Jesus and are more an opinion rather than facts that can be substantiated by other scripture - so I absorb and rejoice in that which can be supported by other scripture but I hesitated to recommend it because of the opinion related material - quite frankly I have chosen not to reference it unless it is on a subject that other commentaries do not give an adequate explanation supported by Biblical scripture. It has been a good reference when it uses other scripture to support a topic and that is good

It appears that the writer thought by using COMPLEX wording that it would be beneficial. However it is NOT, it would have been more effective if he would have spoke as he was trying to teach children. To me I am more effective in my delivery when I try and stay on the level of those that I speakingto rather than try and speak above them.

This book by possibly the foremost authority living on Old Testament is very well presented with an interpretive view through the church lens. Laid out well and thorough in its content, Brueggemann is explicit about his purpose and stays on point to equip for teaching and preaching.

Perhaps the best commentary on Genesis in print. Period! The first reviewer clearly did not grasp what Brueggemann was saying.

IF you are evangelical you will not find this book helpful at all. He states that he will not treat Genesis as history or myth and then proceeds to treat it as myth.

Outstanding! My favorite book ever! Brueggemann opened my mind to see God's intimacy with creation in a way I had never imagined before! I would recommend this volume to anyone that is interested in further study of the Scriptures!
