Fretheim is one of the most respected Old Testament scholars to date and it shows in this commentary. This text does not ignore difficulties in some of the passages and still provides quality application for sermons and small group settings. I highly recommend this commentary. Also, in regards to all the complaints of his view of Scripture, just because he uses fields of research you don't fully understand doesn't make the book unaccessible and of no value for evangelicals.

This book comes from a moderately critical point of view, and for the right person, this book can be very helpful. However, you should have a solidly Evangelical commentary, or two, to ground your studies upon. Two excellent choices are;Douglas Stuart's volume in the New American Commentary series is one of the best. CBD #401024Peter Enns' Volume in the NIV Application series is also an excellent choice. CBD #0206073.Not having any special background or training, just your average believer, I have both of these and have found them to be wonderful reference books!

This commentary takes a rather liberal view on the inerrancy of Scripture, and sometimes leans toward an allegory type of interpretation. For those interested in a commentary with a higher view of Scripture; Exodus, Saved for God's Glory by Philip Ryken (in the Preaching the Word Series) is recommended.
