I love all Hermie and friends dvds, but I was pretty disappointed in this dvd. It was a hodge-podge of past Hermie and friends dvds. The story line really didn't make any sense at all.

The story is about Freddie the Flea who is trying to understand if he is special in the eyes of God. His questions lead him to interview various characters who tell their stories in short flashbacks.
As a pastor, I’m concerned about some of the theological implications. The first is that to pray the characters go outside and look up. God always responds verbally. Obviously one does not have to be outside to pray and God does not always respond verbally to prayer. My impression was that this seems to be a generic “god.”
Another concern is the “does God love me” story line of a flea. Many children know fleas as undesirable creatures… and that’s the point of using a flea. However, the flashbacks do not really answer the question. I asked for feedback from the age group the video is targeted for… I would add that these are also fans of the series. They were unimpressed with the story line and had questions that came from inadvertent false impressions left by the video.
I had one thought while watching this video: “make it stop!” The one redeeming feature of this video is found in the extras… it is a very clear and easy to understand gospel presentation. So how many buy a video for just one extra?

My 8 year-old enjoys Hermie very much. We are collecting them all one at a time. He enjoys the humor in each moral-infused story.

It was awhile after I received this movie from Thomas Nelson/Booksneeze that it ended up popped in my DVD player. My 3-year-old son continuously bypassed it on the shelf for other favourites, such as Thomas, Veggie Tales and the Wiggles. We finally got around to watching it and I think he enjoyed it well enough. The characters are pretty likable, the animation is vibrant and eye-catching, and the voices are well-casted. However, from the standpoint of someone who can actually follow a storyline, I am not a huge fan of this DVD. Let me start by saying that I think this is probably a really good series, and I definitely wouldn't count it out altogether. The problem I had was that this is the fifteenth episode in the series and the storyline relies very heavily on flashbacks. Being as I'm a total stranger to this series, having never heard of it before this review, I'm not even sure if the flashbacks are from previous episodes or not. But without knowing any of the characters mentioned in the flashbacks, it was difficult to follow. So, that being said, I am sure fans of the Hermie and Friends series will love this episode, and for those of you who are not yet familiar with the series, I would highly recommend starting with the first episode, Hermie: A Common Caterpillar.

You do not need young children in your house to watch this DVD. It has a great message for any age group. My son, who is 11, watched the DVD more than once! I recommend this DVD to anyone who believes in God and would like a fun way to teach a great lesson to anyone.

Hermie, Who is in Charge Anyway is a video that I received from Thomas Nelson as a complimentary copy. In this video Hermie stars in a lesson on growing up and talks about God's purpose for our lives. My children loved it and it captured there attention. They seen how the characters, as different bugs, reminisce one night about their favorite memories. All Hermie and Friends adventures are made possible by the things that happened to them as kids. And it is also clear that God has had a plan for all of the garden characters right from the start as long as they had the sense to listen and follow Gods message. It's a great DVD that is colorful, animated, and theologically sound. Max Lucado teaches a marvelous lesson in a creative way. Although most of the DVD is filled with scenes from previous stories, the subject is well thought out as well as easy to understand.

Hermie and Friends: Who is in Charge Anyway? DVDGOD EVEN CARES ABOUT A LITTLE FLEA.When Freddie hears Hailey and Bailey ask their mother whats special about fleas, he thinks its time to have a talk with God.Freddie is reminded that Hermie and Flow and Buzby and Webster and even Antonio all had to learn important lessons before their special talents were put to use. Freddie learns that God didnt make anybody by accident, and that hes not finished with us yet.Contains newly animated flashbacks of key garden characters in their youthalong with pivotal scenes from classic episodes.Lesson is based on Psalm 90:16 Show your servants the wonderful things you do; show your greatness to their children. My Thoughts: When first given the opportunity to review this DVD for Thomas Nelson I was quite excited. I hadnt yet seen a Hermie & Friends movie. When I saw that it was associated with Max Lucado I thought that it would be great. Unfortunately, I found this DVD to be rather dull. Granted Im almost 30, but my 2 yr. old lost interest in it within the first 5 min. and she can often times sit through entire feature length films. The characters were forgettable and the animation wasnt the greatest. The message (God has a purpose and plan for everyone) was appropriate for the age level, but if my child wont watch it then the message wont get across. I would forgo purchasing this DVDinstead, visit your local library to borrow it.

I picked this DVD to review, as I sought out a solid Christian DVD for our children to watch. The Hermie series has drawn my attention for a while now, but this is the first time to actually see one of the stories. I thought this was a very good video for our family! With 3 special needs children who are very visual, they gleaned more from the video than we expected. They learned about the characters' weak spots, how each had an area where they didn't feel comfortable. Each character had something to overcome, like Flo being more quiet and bashful. The kids got to see how each of the gang overcame weaknesses and learned to use their strengths as they grew to trust the Lord. They got to see how God can use anyone, at whatever place they are in, to His good.

Hermie's who's in charge anyway is great. I love the Hermie and friends collection and this one did not disappoint!! In this movie the cast talks about God's purpose/plans for our lives and that God has a plan for everyone. My two children (aged 4 and 6) loved this movie and sat glued to the tv watching it! I love it because you can trust that they're not going to see anything inappropriate on it and it teaches great Biblical lessons to the kids as well! A definate add to the movie library! Loved it! Max lucado does great with these characters and the lessons they teach, I've never seen a hermie movie that I haven't really liked!

Max Lucado does it again. This is a wonderful video any child will love. All four of my children enjoyed this movie about the unique talents of the individual. One of the greatest lies perpetually spoken by the Enemy into the heart of children is that they do not matter. In fact it is a lie that many adults are held in bondage to also. A lie that inhibits spiritual growth, thwarts Gods best laid plans, and causes many Christian believers just to settle for second best instead of Gods best. When Freddie the flea hears Hailey and Bailey ask Whats so important about a flea he begins to wonder if he in fact is important in the big picture of Gods greater plan. In this beautifully animated childrens film the lie is replaced by the truth that ALL of Gods creation is created for a purpose and that each individual has talents that are special for a reason. Thank you Booksneeze for this review copy.

We have a few of the Hermie movies, but not many, so I jumped on the opportunity to review the Hermie: Who's In Charge Anyway DVD. My 2 year old likes to watch these DVDs (actually sitting and paying attention) and this one was no different.I really liked the messages that were portrayed in this DVD. This movie gave several examples of Hermie and his friends learning that God made each person unique and with a special purpose. Although every person is different, God has a plan for our lives and He makes no mistakes in His purpose for any of us. I think it is important to start teaching children, at a young age, that they were created by God to be unique in their own way, and that He has a plan for them. Too many times, I feel that these lessons are told too late in a child's life. We need to reach children when they are young and the most impressionable. That is our duty as parents and believers.I highly recommend this and other Hermie movies to teach your children about the Lord and how much He loves and cares for us.I received this book courtesy of Thomas Nelson and the BookSneeze program. All opinions stated are my own.

This is my 1st DVD review under the Book Sneeze (formerly known as Thomas Nelson) Blogger Review program. To be honest, the moment I saw the name of Max Lucado, I immediately request for a review copy and I didn't even realised that it's a DVD until I received the parcel today! Not complaining at all, since I love Lucado's work.So anyway, I'm constantly looking for educational materials to expose to my 16 months old boy and although I'm trying not to rely so much on IT gadgets as a medium for teaching and learning (we wanted more hands on learning approach), I still gave this a shot. I like the DVD cover because it is attractive and the illustrations are just too cute! I love the sing-along of the "Just Can't Pray" song! Catchy, inspiring and cute! However, I don't quite like some of the characters - like the lizard... kinda spooky actually. What is the DVD about you ask? Well, it's about Freddie the flea who's feeling pretty low because everyone around him seems to have a purpose in life, as if they are put on earth for a reason and that as a flea, he couldn't think of what good he is to be alive and God told him all about the Garden gangs when they are young and afraid and do not have confident like him. After listening to God, Freddie started feeling positive and he realised that God made no mistakes and everything has its purpose on earth! Now, I would definitely play this DVD again as it also has bonus materials such as trivia game and a story read-along. Overall, I give this DVD an 8 out of 10.

My kids were introduced to the Hermie series at a young age. The characters are great and the lessons learned, wonderful. Who could resist the voices of Tim Conway and Don Knotts (now deceased) as the loveable characters Hermie and Wormie? My son, age 8, still loves the Hermie and Friends series and enjoys the lessons learned. This episode was teaching how God made each of us special to do what we need to do. My daughter, age 9, felt that she had outgrown the Hermie magic. She still liked it ok, but felt is was better suited for younger kids.Adorable in every way and teaching a lesson that each of us is unique, useful and necessary, once again, Max Lucado has provided a wonderful teachable moment for my kids and many others. After watching the movie I took the time to discuss the lesson with my kids and talk about what they may not like ab0ut themselves at this time. Each of us has these thoughts and questions and wonder what purpose it all serves.I would highly recommend this DVD or any in the series, for children ages 2-7. I am thankful for thought-provoking entertainment such as this and not just mindless cartoons to take up time.

The lesson in this DVD was based on Psalm 90:16, and featured stories from many different characters, showing that each of them were made by God for a purpose and that God didn't make anyone by accident. Hermie & Friends are new to our house, so I was glad for the chance to get a bit of an introduction to all the characters and their personalities in this DVD through the flashbacks of this episode. Hermie, the title character, is voiced by the hysterically funny Tim Conway, and I laughed out loud at many of his lines. I was watching with my son who is almost 3. He liked the DVD enough to sit through it twice in a row last night (the main story is 30 minutes long and then there are 30 more minutes of bonus features on the DVD). My son is too young to get the jokes, but he seemed to really like the animation and the characters.Personally, I really liked this DVD and will definitely be adding more Hermie & Friends episodes to our DVD library. The spiritual lesson was fabulous, the graphics very nice and I thought the storyline moved quickly and featured good humor along with the theology. If you're looking for a great Christian DVD for your child, definitely check this one out!Disclosure: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I love that Tommy Nelson has wholesome videos my children can watch. This video flipped back and forth between older snippets from previous movies and the current storyline. This was to show Freddie how God worked in the other characters' lives. My 8yr. old was able to follow the flipping back and forth because she remembered seeing the original movies. My 3yr. and almost 2yr. old had a hard time paying attention to the movie. It seemed a little slow and confusing for them to follow. I was a little disappointed that it didn't hold their attention as well as their favorite Flo movie. Still, the message was good and I think if they were a little older they would have been able to follow along better. This DVD has several other features added such as a trivia game, behind the scenes and sing-along. My 8yr. old enjoyed seeing and using these features. I would probably recommend this video for kids 4 and up. Disclosure: I received a copy for review from www.booksneeze.com. Opinions are my own.

Tonight my daughter and snuggled up and watched Who's In Charge Anyway?, from Max Lucado's Hermie and Friends dvd collection. This lesson was based on Psalm 90:16, "show your servants the wonderful things you do; show your greatness to their children." It showed that God even cares about a little flea, and how He makes everything for a purpose and doesn't make mistakes. It inclueded newly animated flashbacks along with scenes from classic episodes. I loved the story line, simply put and easy for the youngest child to understand, that God makes us all unique and special and it takes time to understand and learn to use our own special talents. My daughter loved trying to figure out what each bug was and how he was going to use his ability in each situation. Her favorite bugs were the colorful ladybugs and she loved the opening scene, but I won't spoil it.This dvd contains several bonus features including read and sing alongs, screen savers, trivia games and more, and features the voice talents of Sam Mercurio and Tim Conway. Its a simple, colorful, fun story with a great message kids need to hear. We loved it!I was given a copy to review from the Booksneeze Reviewers program. "Who is in Charge Anyway?" is the latest in Max Lucado's Hermie and Friends series which follows the adventures of the insects who live in Max's garden. When Freddie the Flea comes to fix the ladybugs' television set, he overhears little Hailey and Bailey ask their mother, "What's so special about fleas?" Freddie wonders the same thing and, in Hermie and Friends fashion, talks to God about it. Through a series of flashbacks into previous episodes, God reminds Freddie that each of the insects had to learn an important lesson before they found their special talents. The moral of the story...and one that it not just for kids...is that God created each one of us for a purpose, and sometimes it takes awhile to find out what that purpose is.The Hermie and Friends videos are quiet stories, suitable for preschool children and their families. The humor is low key and subtle, with the comforting voices of Tim Conway, Sam Mercurio, Vicki Lawrence, Melissa Disney and others. This episode is different from the other Hermie videos since it consists of a series of flashbacks. However, the message, based on Psalm 90:16*, is a powerful one for the entire family. God has a plan for everyone, no matter how small.*"Show your servants the wonderful things you do; show your greatness to their children. First of all, let me say that I received this DVD, "Who is in Charge Anyway?", by Max Lucado, free from Thomas Nelson's publishers, as part of their BookSneeze.com book review blogger's program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255, "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."Therewith that said, here is my honest review. It is a sweet story about how God cares for everyone. When Freddie hears Hailey and Bailey ask their mother what is special about fleas, Freddie decides it is time to have a talk with God. The DVD shows flashbacks of other garden characters in their youth, and Freddie learns that God did not make anyone by accident, and that God is not finished with us, yet. It features the voice talents of Tim Conway as Hermie, and Sam Mercurio. This lesson is based on Psalm 90:16. The actual DVD runs about 30 minutes, plus has bonus features that are fun, too!We really enjoyed watching this DVD! Although I am familiar with Max Lucados books, this is the first time we have been introduced to Hermie and his friends. We (mom, and 2 boys--one age 7, and one age 9 with Down Syndrome) started watching the DVD, and pretty soon, 2 other older boys joined in, and we were all laughing! It teaches a wonderful lesson, that God has a special plan for each of us, and He can use us in different wayseven if its just telling others about Gods love for us.

I loved this video!! Being the mom of 5, the wife of a Childrens Pastor, and someone who has been involved in childrens ministry for lots of years, I have watched more kids videos than I can count. I always love it when I find one with a strong yet easy to teach message. If all kids could get the message of this video engraved on their hearts and in their minds, it would change the world. Actually, I think there are a lot of adults who could benefit from the message as well. We are made like we are because that is how God wanted us, we are not mistakes, He doesnt make mistakes, we are all a part of the big plan. We just need to follow God and fulfill our part instead of wishing we were something else!! Great video, great message, would definitely recommend.

Who's in Charge Anyway, by Max Lucado is a video in the series about Hermie and Friends. With flashbacks to how his friends have learned God's lessons and are growing into the insects God wants them to be, Freddie the Flea learns that God cares about him personally. He also learns that his friends haven't always been the strong, courageous, or confident bugs he knows them to be.This video feels like the kind of story that will grow with my kids' understanding of it. As 2-year-olds, they enjoy the colors and the characters, and will now frequently ask to "watch Hermie!" As they grow, they will learn to follow the story and begin to understand that God has a plan for each of them, and while He may not be finished with them yet, He hasn't made a mistake, and He knows what He's doing with each of them. There are even subtle jokes (like the "Water Beetles" music group) for the parents watching along to get extra enjoyment out of it.Overall, I love the Hermie series. I love that there's a good message in an enjoyable cartoon for my kids and I like having this alternative to the other children's options out there.I received a free copy of this DVD from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze program.
