This colorfully illustrated and sturdy board book contains13 stories from the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Included in this selection of favorite children’s Bible stories are: The Man Who Ate Locusts, John Baptizes Jesus, Jesus Heals a Sick Boy, Jesus Brings a Girl Back to Life, Jesus Walks on Water, Jesus Loves the Children, Zacchaeus, A Blind Man Sees Again, Jesus Stops a Storm, One Lost Sheep, Jesus' Best Friends, One Man Says Thank You, and Jesus Goes to Heaven. Each story is easy to read for beginning readers and each is beautifully illustrated. A great addition to any child’s library! This is a book for parents of young children. The message of the book is to introduce Jesus to children. Each of the 13 chapters shows a part of Jesus' character and nature. It is appropriate for any adult who wants to begin to share who Jesus is and what He did with children.

The illustrations in this book are kid friendly as are the words. At the end of each chapter, a question is asked to spur on more dialogue between parent and child. Bible references are given for each chapter for further study. I enjoyed the simple consistency of word and illustration. A good starting point for parents.

When I picked up the children's board book, "Read and Share Stories about Jesus" I expected to read a very simple Bible storybook. What I found surprised me, as it was more advanced than I had expected. I found this Bible storybook to be very interesting and I believe it would be enjoyed by children from infants through second grade. This would be a wonderful book for a family with several children of different ages.

This book contains 13 stories from the life and ministry of Jesus Christ including: God's Baby Son Grows Up, John Baptizes Jesus, Jesus Heals a Sick Boy, Jesus Brings a Girl Back to Life, Jesus Walks on Water, Jesus Loves Children, A Very Short Man, A Blind Man Sees Again, Jesus Stops a Storm, One Lost Sheep, A Coin in a Fish, One Man Says Thank You, and Jesus Goes to Heaven. (one quick note, the publisher's website has incorrectly listed a couple of the stories included in the book.) the choice of stories was very appropriate for young children and provide the important details.

I love that after each story in the book there is a question or thought to help discuss the story. As a teacher, I've learned that it is important for children to be actively involved in the stories they hear to develop in-depth understanding and improved memory of the material.

Book Review: Read and Share Stories about Jesus by Gwen Elllis

For our family, it is often difficult to find Bible related children's books that everyone can agree on. A lot of times, we feel that the message is diluted, or told in a way that we feel isn't close enough to scripture. So I always hesitate to pick up a book with Bible stories for kids. However, Gwen Ellis has put together a winner for the 1-6 year age set.

The first thing that struck me about the book was that it was super sturdy. It is hard backed, and the book pages are like a board book, so it seems like it's going to stand the test of time. The illustrations are also very engaging The colors are bright, and the illustrations are realistic enough.

Each page is like a little story by itself. There are 13 stories from Scripture within the book, and each one quotes the passage from the Bible that is referenced. There are some old favorites, like the birth and baptism of Jesus, as well as the shephard and the lost sheep. Surprisingly, my three year old daughter liked the story "A Coin in a Fish" where Jesus tells Peter to catch a fish to get money to pay taxes with. It isn't a commonly told Bible story, but she thought it was pretty funny. The story that I really liked was Jesus goes to heaven, which talks about the death and resurrectoin of Jesus. My husband and I both appreciated the idea that the book did not gloss over his death, but at the same time did not focus on the crucifixtion, which we feel is a little too intense for the preschool crowd.

At the end of each story, the author poses questions for the reader about Jesus and the story that preceded it, such as "How is Jesus like the shepherd looking for his one lost sheep?", which is the question that follows the One Lost Sheep story. These questions can serve as the jumping off point for some good discussions. However, in a quick read, my three year old's answers tended to be "I don't know". This would be a great book to add some good content into a preschool Sunday School class, which to me can be macaroni-craft heavy.

Overall, this book is definitely a winner, and would be a great addition to any preschool Sunday School library.

This board book for children has 13 stories about the life and ministry of Jesus told in a short, easy to read format. Children will understand the story and see the reference to the scripture each story comes from. At the end of the story there is a question or statement to open up a discussion with children about how they can learn from Jesus and do what He did. The pictures are in bright colors and coordinate with the story to pull the child in to the book.

I would recommend this book for anyone with small children. They will enjoy having it read to them or even reading it to themselves. This book is a good way to introduce stories from the Bible and teach children to love Jesus.

My daughter and I read through the Read and Share Stories about Jesus book by Gwen Ellis, illustrated by Steve Smallman today. This is a large board book written for Children ages 4-8. It has 13 Bible stories about Jesus and after each story one or two questions are asked. Also, under each title, the Scripture reference is listed of where the stories are located in the Bible. The stories that are included in this book are:

God's Baby Son Grows Up
John Baptizes Jesus
Jesus Heals a Sick Boy
Jesus Brings a Girl Back to Life
Jesus Walks on the Water
Jesus Loves Children
A Very Short Man
A Blind Man Sees Again
Jesus Stops a Storm
One Lost Sheep
A Coin in a Fish
One Man Says Thank You
Jesus Goes to Heaven

I think the illustrator did a great job with the art for this book. His art was appealing and captured the attention of my lively two year old. Since it is a board book, the pages are easy to turn for little hands and less likely to tear; although, I am not sure that a board book would appeal to ages 4-8. Board books are often seen as little kids books. The questions at the end of the stories are a great idea to get children thinking and not just reading another story. Many of the questions make them think about what it would be like if they had been right there with Jesus.
That being said, I think the content might be suitable for a 4 year old, but pretty shallow for an 8 year old. The stories don't have much substance to them especially when compared to the Scripture from which they are pulled. I would rate it as okay, but not outstanding. You would need to add quite a bit on your own to make them of any substance. I think that our kids can understand more than we know. I would not recommend this book.
