Hendrickson Publishers Schaff's History of the Christian Church Volume 1
Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a German Reformed church historian, born in Switzerland. He was educated at Tubingen, Halle, and Berlin, and later took a position as Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary, New York.
Schaff bases his work on the premise that church history in order to be valid and valuable must deal with three factors: 1) God through Christ, 2) man as a responsible moral creature, and 3) Satan as a real being employing the Anti-Christ as his agent at the end of time. Schaff begins his history with an examination of the preparation for Christianity in Judaism and the heathen world and the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The first volume in this series covers Apostolic Christianity from A.D. 1-100. Includes footnotes, charts, maps and contains its own alphabetical index.

Without a doubt Schaff's volumes on theHistory of the Christian Church are thesmoothest reading and yet most informativevolumes ever penned on Church History...very few writers have this gift. It wouldbe a dream come true if someone could pen volumes 9 and 10 in the same writing styleas Schaff and cover the period from1600 AD to 2000 AD.

This volume is a history of the Church from its inception through about A.D. 100. The First 53 pages introduce the first writers of Church history and what they wrote. Then we get into the beginning of the Church as Schaff sees it. He is, in my estimation one of the best Historians of the Church. He has down much research and lays bare many facts that were unknown to many who will read this volume. Sometimes the Historian takes over and a few paragraphs will be boring to some. But on every few pages or for a space every page will present interesting, sparkling new facts and ideas. I have been taking many notes and studying as I go. It can be a slow but very rewarding reading. I am sorry that I did not purchase it earlier. It opens on page 55 with the first period and looks into the preparation for Christianity with a brief look at the history of the Jewish and Heathern world with the first period being the Church under the Apostles. The New Testament is examined and historical facts are presented. There are instances that Mr Schaff presents his opinions which I do not always agree with but that makes the book very interesing as I see other peoples views. It ends with a look at the Book of The Revelaton of Jesus Christ and presents several views of this book, and we must remember this is a book of symbols. Numbers and dates are not to be taken taken literally and many people try to take some numbers and dates literally while this is a book of symbols and we must try and decipher their meaning. With this the first volume stops. I am sure you will find this volume very rewarding.
