Tyndale House Damascus Countdown, The Twelfth Imam Series #3

All eyes are on the Middle East. Israel has successfully launched a first strike on Iran, taking out all of their nuclear sites and six of their nuclear warheads-and causing The Twelfth Imam to order a full-scale retaliation. US President William Jackson threatens to support a UN Security Council resolution condemning the Jewish State for unprovoked and unwarranted acts of aggression.

Meanwhile, CIA operative David Shirazi has infiltrated the Iranian regime and intercepted information indicating that two Iranian nuclear warheads survived the attack and have been moved to a secure and undisclosed location. In danger not only from the ongoing missile strikes on Iran but also from the increasingly hostile and suspicious governments of multiple countries, David and his team are in a race against time to find the remaining nuclear warheads before disaster strikes.

Damascus Countdown is a novel (third in a series), written by best-selling author Joel C. Rosenberg. In this book CIA operative David Shirazi and his team race against the clock to hunt down Iranian nuclear warheads to keep them from being launched at Israel. The book is action packed and while I was reading, I was hoping this would eventually be made into a movie. It is hard to believe this book is a work of fiction as I can easily imagine these events happening, given the tensions in the Middle East. Another thing I liked about the book is that it is very suspenseful but there are scriptural elements in it also, as one of the characters (Dr. Birjandi), is a secret Christian convert and frequently refers to scripture as he talks to David and fellowships with two newly converted men. There is also a romantic element as well and you will need to read to the end to see how that relationship turns out. The action continues all the way to the end. I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone.

In Damascus Countdown, Joel Rosenberg has created a stunning conclusion to the trilogy that began with the Twelfth Imam and The Tehran Initiative.
Joel Rosenberg has fused together a single story out of multiple viewpoints, using the breaks in perspective to heighten the tension.
And there is much tension in this book, as there is in our world today.
The Islamic false messiah, the "Twelfth Iman" has come into power, an he is leading Muslims all over the globe as they attempt to establish the universal Caliphate. Total Muslim domination is his end, and the Imam is manipulating religion and politics to achieve his goal.
Despite his claims that the global Caliphate will be a reign of peace, justice and unity, the Imam is pursuing as many nuclear weapons as he can. Of course, he calls them "weapons of life."
As Iran's nuclear capabilities increase and increase, Israel launches an effective pre-emptive strike, cutting Iran down to two nuclear warheads. But the warheads cannot be accounted for... and now these "missing" warheads are on the move, on their way to a launch site that American intelligence cannot pinpoint.
Israel knows these warheads must be stopped, but America resists a full commitment to help their ally. The America government is not pleased with Israel's self defense, and instead warns them to stand down or fear sanctions.
Meanwhile, In Iran, crack CIA operative David Shirazi and his fine paramilitary team are given this mission: Find and Destroy the warheads. And do this now. Millions of Israeli and soon America lives hang in the balance.
Shirazi, Fox, Crenshaw, Torres, and Mays must move with precision, and they must let nothing stop them. In other words, they must be the special ops team that they are.
As I read this book aloud, my listeners sat riveted. The action is incredible... The characters are real and you care about them as you read. The story is thought provoking on many levels...especially considering our world today.
Thank you Joel Rosenberg for this book, and thank you Tyndale House and Goodreads for hosting this Giveaway for Damascus Countdown.

I love Joel Rosenbergs books. I swear the man sees into the future. While I was reading the series, the news came on and reported large earthquakes in Iran. I had just read the part in his book about Iran setting off a nuclear weapon underground and triggering a large earthquake. I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the series. It is a page turner, even if you are not a Christian

Joel C. Rosenberg in his book "Damascus Countdown" Book Three in The Twelfth Imam series published by Tyndale House Publishers brings us to The Middle East in the possible future.
From the inside jacket flap: This time, all eyes are not just on Iran, but on Syria as well.
Israel successfully launches a first strike on Iran, taking out all of their nuclear sites and six of their nuclear warheads. American President William Jackson threatens to support a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the Jewish State for unprovoked and unwarranted acts of aggression. And The Twelfth Imam prepares to order a genocidal retaliation.
Meanwhile, CIA operative David Shirazi has infiltrated the Iranian regime and intercepted top secret intelligence indicating that two Iranian nuclear warheads survived the attack and have been moved to a secure and undisclosed location. In danger not only from the ongoing war between Israel and Iran but also from the increasingly hostile governments in multiple countries, Shirazi and his team are in a race against time to find the remaining nuclear warheads before the most cataclysmic event in the history of The Middle East comes to pass.
I think it is entirely possible that Joel Rosenberg is a spy. Not your typical spy I suppose but since I have never met one and have no reference point based on what I read all I can say is he must be some kind of spy. Mr. Rosenberg knows a lot about how governments work. He has a fascinating amount of information about what is going on in the Muslim world and he has written a fast-paced thriller to prove it.
In "Damascus Countdown" Joel C. Rosenberg weaves together headlines from our current news with Biblical prophecy. This book is entertaining and will have you flipping pages as fast as you can read but, be prepared, it is also thought-provoking and will have you looking up from the page going, "wow". I do not recommend starting this book late at night because it will cost you sleep as you will not want to put it down. Mr. Rosenberg is an excellent writer and knows how to twist your nerve endings as he tightens the suspense.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. This book took me way longer than it should have. The story line was good, but it’s hard to say you enjoyed something like that. The hardest part was all the Arabic names! It was difficult to keep track of who was who. I had to keep referring back to the guide in the front of the book. Around page 350 the book became so captivating that it was hard to put it down.
David is a CIA operative who is undercover in Iran with a group of men. Their job? To locate and destroy the last two known nuclear weapons the twelfth Imam (here is where names become difficult) has to send into Israel or the US. David has recently converted to Christianity thanks to Dr. Birjandi, an Islamic eschatology professor. Dr. Birjandi converted to Christianity many years ago but it was not known to the Islam world. He is blind and his wife helped him memorize the Bible. Which he shares with those who are interested. The doctor is very dear to David. He is also very highly thought of by the twelfth Imam.
David, being undercover, made a connection with someone in the inner circle of the Imam. He smuggled in some satellite phones for them. These phones would work even though there were no land lines and were supposed to be more secure. However, these phones were being tracked by the CIA. Every phone conversation was intercepted and translated by a group at Langley Virginia. This is how most of the intel was collected that helped David and his team on their mission.
Dr. Birjandi’s presence is request demanded by the Imam. When a helicopter shows up to retrieve him he does not know where he is going for sure. Birjandi does however extra very valuable information from those who trust him as an Islamic spiritual leader. He also is in possession of a satellite phone from David and using this he gets away a couple of times to get information to David. In the end Birjandi is asked to speak a few words at the launch of the missiles into Israel, presumably something “Islamic”. Dr. Birjandi stands up and renounces Islam and announces his faith in Jesus Christ at his Savior and true Messiah. I’m sure you can figure out what happened next. He was ushered into the presence of the Lord!
Maybe you picked up on the fact there were missiles ready to be launched. This is the most captivating part of the story. A wonderful testimony for Christianity. It really made the entire 470 pages worth it. The biggest reason I gave it 4 stars. Other than the names being hard to follow and the fact that the story jumps around every few pages, sometimes several times on the same page, from the war room in Israel to Langley to Damascus, many locations throughout the story. Some times this made it difficult to follow. Over all I would recommend this book.
This book was provided to me free of charge by Tyndale Publishing for an honest and fair review.

Intense, intelligent, and a real sleep stealer! Damascus Countdown gives you plenty of moments to wince, hold your breath, and frequently check the clock at night. The whole series needs to be read as it gives such a detailed story about prophetic writings, political correctness, and current events. The characters are well developed throughout and there is closure at the end. The only question remains: what will Joel Rosenberg write next?

David is the CIA's most valuable undercover operative. He is in Iran when Israel successfully launches a surprise attack, taking out all of Iran's nuclear sites. Iran's nuclear warheads were destroyed – except two. The Ayatollah and the Twelfth Imam have them. The CIA has no idea where the warheads are. David's assignment is to find them before it is too late.
One learns much about Muslim eschatology in this novel. Muslims believe the Twelfth Imam is their Messiah. He comes to save them, redeem them, and rule over the whole earth. Jesus would be coming too – to be the Mahdi's lieutenant.
In this novel, the Imam al-Mahdi came to establish the Caliphate, a collection of Muslim nations. He claims he will establish peace in the Middle East. He warned that if the Caliphate was attacked, the War of Annihilation would begin and Israel would be destroyed.
One also learns about Muslims who become Christians and the danger they endure.
This novel is unabashedly Christian. The gospel is presented in glaring clarity. Christian eschatology is also presented. It is discussed in a dialog and that seemed a little contrived to me.
While I may not totally agree with how Rosenberg interprets prophetic passages in the Bible, his writing is excellent and certainly presents one possible account of the near future.
There is lots of action in this novel. It can be read alone but I think it would be best if read after The Twelfth Imam and The Tehran Initiative.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.

Once again the author captures the reader within the opening pages as David fights to stay alive and prevent a nuclear holocaust. Like the first two books in this three part series the action is fast paced and intense.
I love the main character David Shirazi! He's smart, passonate, and real. Like many he struggles to completely understand what it means to live this life of faith. But as he fights to stay alive in difficult situations he realizes that although his fate on earth is uncertain, he eternity is not, this fact drives his actions on many levels.
This book offers not only action and a love story, but some harsh realities of the times we live. There are a couple of secondary story lines I don't completely understand why the author included, other than to remind us bad things do happen to Christian people.
I definitely feel you want to read book one and two before reading three, you won't truly appreciate the story if you don't. If you enjoy action packed stories then this is a winning series. This story will also give you some insights to the end times beliefs of Islam, which I knew nothing about before reading this series.

Gripping. Intriguing. Descriptive. Creative. Brilliant.
This well-researched, well-written final book in the three-part series continues to show the author has his finger on the pulse of Middle East events. Rosenberg’s political, cultural, Islamic and biblical understanding of the world’s epicenter is second-to-none.
Without giving away any details of the storylines, suffice it to say that the multiple plots in Syria, Iran, Israel, United States, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are woven together in a thrilling scenario over a 4-day period….a 4-day period in our near future?
Rosenberg’s descriptive writing style is compelling—one can almost hear, see, smell and feel the scenes. The surprise twist can cause the reader to open his eyes wide and say, “Wow! That was brilliant!” Then the realization hits that events are currently setting up for this “twist” to possibly be a real-life news headline in our lifetime.
This book (and the entire series) must be read to understand the global impact of the events occurring in the Middle East.

When I saw the opportunity to participate in the early review of Joel C. Rosenberg's newest novel, Damascus Count I was was elated and grabbed at the opportunity. Rosenberg is one of today's more exciting authors because he writes exciting stories based on timely matters and he is right on target with events. It is almost as though he can see through the glass into what is about to happen. So let's look at this newest book of his that is due for release March 2013.
My thoughts: Damascus is known as probably the oldest continuously settled or occupied city in existence. But is the clock ticking down? Are we now counting down the moments or days before the demise of Damascus or the world's demise? In Damascus Countdown, Joel C. Rosenberg take us deep into Syria and Iran and among the heads of state both politically, militarily, and spiritually. The Twelth Imam is foretold to be the "Messiah" of the Islamic faith and the one who will lead them into world dominion.
Just like the morning news reports of today, this story unfolds with tension over nuclear arms in Syria and Iran and those armaments being pointed at Israel. Joel Rosenberg is a recognized authority on the Middle East and also on Biblical understanding of that area.
In Damascus Countdown Mr. Rosenberg takes us through passages in Isaiah that point to the fate of Syria and Iran. We see the story unfolding with a CIA deep cover operative and team leader, David Shirazi, alias Reza Tabrizi, who is also Iranian by birth. The book begins with a bang and each page you turn brings scenes of intrigue, of explosive events, of political adversaries on both sides of the ocean, and of spiritual emboldenment by converts from Islam to Christianity.
If you're expecting a sweet little romance, this is not the book for you. If you're expecting a feel-good story - even with a bit of adventure, this is not the book for you. This book is long at 480 pages. It is dramatic. It is intense. It gives long interpretive discourses of Scripture. But it is not boring. It is not dry. It is not a "tear-jerker." This book will capture your attention and hold it until you turn page 479.
In Rosenberg's fiction you will discover finely tuned and developed characters. You will visualize the scenes he so aptly describes and almost feel the intensity the characters feel. And you will discover individuals who have willingly and joyfully counted the cost, and counted it very small indeed, to convert to Christianity.
DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Tyndale Blog Network on behalf of the publisher and author in exchange for my honest review. Opinions expressed are solely my own. i received no compensation for this review.
