I love the Little Blessings books; they answer theological questions that I wouldn't even think of bringing up at this age in a very straightforward way that is great for preschoolers. The book is chock-full of sweet rhymes like this one:"The love that God has for usshines through and through.And that's how we knowthat the Bible is true!"And we have been working on understanding what the Bible is here, since Esm has been insisting than any pictures of books are "Bibles!" So this subject is right on target.It was interesting to note that the illustrator, Elena Kucharik, was also an artist for Care Bears. The illustrations are adorable, with lots of children and animals and other objects kids love, and tell whole stories all on their own.

It is surprisingly difficult to find children's books explaining what the Bible is, but Kathleen Long Bostrum's recent title What is the Bible? tackles the topic aptly.Like all the books in the popular "Little Blessings" series, this one begins with a series of questions a child might ask, including "Who wrote the Bible?/One person? A few?/What does it say?/Can you give me a clue?" The second half of the book then answers these questions. We learn the Bible is "one of a kind," God's word, was written by many people with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, should be read - and reread over and over, tells us of many interesting people -especially the story of Jesus the Savior, and more.The last several pages of the book back up the text with Biblical references, which can also be used to discuss the topic with your child.What I Like: I appreciate having a simple book to help explain even to very young children what the Bible is all about. This book isn't as detailed or all-encompassing as the Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers book, but that's what makes it a perfect introduction for younger children, or children who are less familiar with Christian teachings.Kucharik's illustrations also add great interest, as she shows small children of various ethnicities reading the Bible, playing, and going about their daily lives.What I Dislike: One section names a few famous people of the Bible, but since only names (and no hints of stories) are mentioned, if your child isn't familiar with these people, he or she may be bored for a couple of pages.Overall Rating: Very Good.Kristina SeleshankoManaging EditorChristian Children's Book Review

My littles ones and I had a great time snuggling up with these books. What is the Bible? talks in simple words about weighty matters. It begins with the many questions a child might ask about the Bible (is it true, who wrote it, etc.)Then, in loving response the answers come. It is true, amazing, and to be treasured. I wish the author had placed greater weight on the saving work of Christ on the cross, as that is perhaps the most important message of the Bible. But, she does encourage kids to read it, and reread, with references in the back to dig deeper together.

I purchased this entire series for my daughter. Being an educator I value good writing and illustrations; unfortunately, the illustrator and or author allow pictures to repeat themselves in the entire series. Teaching children reading and connecting pictures with words this can be incredibly frustrating, as I find that all the books have repeated pictures. This truly is a disappointing factor. Something one would never find in secular series, it is unheard of from renown authors and illustrators. I was disappointed, as I find myself having to explain to my daughter about the illustrations being repeated and saying different things. If you are planning to purchase these books limit yourself to one or two, as the others will have the same pictures, including the devotionals and Blessings Every Day. ---Teacher
