Not much of a plot to this movie. The story of faithfulness is good though. But personally I would watch it once on TV or skip it if I knew it was going to be like this.

Clean movie about the loyalty of a dog & his owner's love for him. My teenage son won't watch it again because it's such a tear-jerker, though.

This movie is incredibly slow. We kept waiting for a plot to develop. When we finally figured out what was going to happen we had already wasted 45 minutes and it was going to be another 45 min of pain hoping it would get better. It totally changes the true story transporting it from Japan to America. It might have had a chance following the true story. As it is they made a boring, slow fantasy that is very, very sad. Not a family movie.

The story is moving and difficult. There are a lot of struggles in the relationships, between the professor, his wife, and Hachi, the dog. Hachi's faithfulness and devotion to his master help the professor and his wife to overcome their objections to having a dog (especially Hachi, who is very independent-minded at times). The development of the relationships over time is what makes the story wonderful. What makes it difficult is watching Hachi's decline after the death of the professor. I struggled with the ending. I know it is based on a true story, but the depiction of Hachi's final years seemed more dishonoring than honoring of his faithfulness. Where were the people who delighted in and indulged him earlier in the film? Why did they stop caring? Why was he abandoned to fend for himself? The ending raised all of those unanswered questions for me. It was a good movie; I just struggled with the inhumane element of the ending.

I believe everyone should see this portrayal of what loyalty means in the simplelest form. This picture shows that loyalty, love and friendship should be valued no matter what. God keeps coming back to us no matter what even til the end.

I started watching this with my 10 year old son. We did not realize how sad this movie was. We were both crying. I stopped the movie because he had to go somewhere. I thought I would watch the rest of the movie myself to see if I should show it to him. I sat and cried throughout this whole movie. It is not an uplifting movie, but an extremely sad one. I would not recommend this for younger children. I would only recommend it to someone who wants to sit down and cry for one hour. In all fairness, the movie was a well made movie and of course the acting was great.

Before this film was made I had already known of the real Hachiko, and the original Japanese film Hachiko Monogatari. I was happy to see an American version of this film, perhaps giving it a broader audience beyond Japan. This is a true, timeless account of the special relationship between human and dog. Having owned a dog, I have often wondered what breed of dog God might have had? There is certainly no animal quite like a dog. A dog is a companion, a family member, and a true friend for life. It is sad that some people do not treat dogs (in fact, all animals) with the kindness and compassion they deserve.
