NAV Press Deceived by Shame, Desired by God

Rape, incest, alcoholism, addiction, divorce bitterness, gossip, abortion. The list could go on and on with ways sin poisons our lives. And whether the sin is self-imposed or committed by someone else, it always has the potential to cause us a deep-seated sense of shame. This toxic emotion often convinces us we are irreparably damaged at our very core. And sadly, the hurt doesn't end there. All too often, shame brings about additional self-destructive behavior, triggering an ongoing cycle that leads us even further from a relationship with God. The enemy wants you to believe the lie that there is something terribly, and permanently, wrong with you. But God's truth is that there is nothing about you or your past that cannot be redeemed. Learn how the healing love of God can bring good out of your darkest, most shameful secrets. Let Him pull up your hidden roots of shame and replace them with His unconditional love for you.

This book is a wonderful tool to receive insight into the issues of bondage generated by shame. It is an easy read but is so thought provoking. The author did a great job and the women in my Bible Study group just love it and yolks are being broken every week we meet.

This is a powerful book! This is a book that everyone PERSON of God should read in order to help any woman, i.e. mother, sister, wife, etc., etc. to heal. And every woman should read to help herself and/or others. I will be purchasing more to give to those God directs.

One night a few weeks ago I woke between 2:00 A.M. and 4:00 A.M. and was having what I call a shame attack. Anyone knowing that mental state recognizes what an awful complex of emotional paralysis develops. I spent years working on this subject and learning the skills to deal with just this sort of thing. Still shame is a menace at times, and I am greatly comforted to have Cynthias person and years of practice minister to me. I had recently read Cynthias book and got it out that morning, reviewing a particular part, then others. I read over a page listing tendencies among people with abuse in the background, and then I re-read some additional chapters. An hour later I felt calm and went back to bed. To anyone else who experiences this phenomenon any time of the day or night you know that is a marvelous thing to achieve. I did not understand shame, its symptoms or it origins until fairly recently in my middle aged life. I was a victim of a silent and deadly phantom-shame. Men rarely talk about this subject, especially as it might relate to abuse, and even more to sexual abuse-a common cause. I recommend this book to any man or woman who experiences toxic shame, knows people who find it problematic or want to understand an underlying cause of much emotional paralysis. Cynthia covers the subject with a marvelous mix of clinical understanding and personal connection. Anyone who knows trauma of any kind (which usually produces shame) will be touched with knowledge, wisdom and understanding on a difficult but compelling piece of life.

Cynthia Humbert has written a manual of hope foranyone trapped in the cycle of bitterness and shame. Not only does she help us understandhow this happens, she shows us how to breakfree and experience the healing of God's unconditional love and grace. This is a book I will keep and refer to in my personal life. This is a bookI will give to anyone struggling with their past. The Scriptures used are excellent. I highly recommendthis book.

Finally a book that looks honestly at the "secret" sins many Christians have committed or are struggling with. Cynthia's book offers compassion and hope to those silently carrying their hurts and failures, so filled with shame that they feel unworthy of God's love. We are reminded that throughout the Bible, God chose to use "broken, weak and sinful people to serve him and fulfill his plans". Pointing us to the absolute truth, God's Word, this book shows us that our Heavenly Father is waiting with open arms to embrace us with his unconditional love and forgiveness, wiping our slates clean forever. Quoting her favorite verse, "You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free", (from bondage of sin and regret) it is clear that physical and emotional recovery is not only obtainable, but in fact the very thing God longs for his children to experience. Cynthia's challenge to the church to be more "authentic" so people feel welcomed and accepted no matter what they have done, is a battle cry I pray will not be ignored. Read this book and begin believing you are precious and dearly loved by God and watch as he begins to transform you life and set you free!

Cynthia's story was incredibly encouraging to me, a fellow struggler with depression and shame. She was vunerable and honest, but filled with hope because of her testimony of healing through Christ. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with self-esteem issues due to an abusive background. And after meeting Cynthia, I can honestly say that she lives what she writes. To me, there is no better "review" than that.

The book can be understood by women in all stages of life who are struggling with issues af abuse, addiction, or guilt. I recommend this book for women who are seeking God's answers and solutions for problems in their past and present lives. There is a self-paced Bible study at the end of the book which is sure to be an added blessing for the reader.
